Final Orange Bowl thoughts: This one deserves a victory cigar

Clemson's postgame celebration was different than many others, maybe because it was the last time this team will be together and the last time we'll Sammy Watkins in a Clemson uniform. But it didn't make it any less sweeter. Full Story »

I was EXTREMELY disappointed...

Jan 4, 2014, 4:16 PM

… that Urban Meyer didn’t punch Stephone Anthony after the game-sealing interception! :)

How crazy is it that the last 2 games against OSU ended on stupid interceptions by the OSU QBs?!?

Other than that, and the stupid penalties (some of which were actually legit), and some stupid play-calls, the missed extra point, and Tajh’s 2 boneheaded interceptions, that was a good game and a VERY satisfying win (like the LSU & UGA wins) against a good blue-chip big-boy team. Regardless of the score, Clemson outplayed OSU on both sides of the ball. Even when Clemson was trailing late, and I thought Clemson might lose, I was proud that Clemson was looking like a team that can hang with the elite teams. Actually winning it was sweet and a big feather in Dabo’s cap.

But it wasn’t a Gamecock feather in his cap so I wish Dabo hadn’t spewed his list of obviously pre-memorized brags and the stupid comment about Clemson being the only school from SC to win a BCS bowl. (Especially silly the only reason we were in the Orange Bowl was that FSU spanked us and is in the BCSNCG, and SCar was arguably more deserving of a better bowl than us.)

Still… great win. Kudos to Dabo, staff, and the players. I hope we end up Top 10. It would be nice to see the Clemson helmet in the backdrop on CFB Live all off-season and on the front pages of the ESPN.com, SI.com, et al.

In state rivalry is the most insignificant game of season

Jan 4, 2014, 4:33 PM

No one other than people like you (fans) care. I've been recruited at a very high level and trust me, no coach ever talked to me about beating the in state rival. It was always about conference championships, national exposure, a chance to play and a plan for winning it all. If we have to lose one game per year, I couldn't care less if that game is to Wake or SC. Ws and Ls are all we need to focus on. Do that, and the championships will follow.

rodney paulk would disagree...

it can matter, the only question is how much. for you, not so much.

parents are fans, kids are fans. kids grow up to be players and have their own likes, dislikes, preferences and buttons.

What the #### are you talking about? Beating your rival doesn't matter? Get the #### out of here with that ########.

Re: I was EXTREMELY disappointed...

Jan 4, 2014, 4:33 PM [ in reply to I was EXTREMELY disappointed... ]

^^^^^^ some people have always got to look at the negatives as if there actually were any last night. Not deserving, not pretty enough, coach should not say anything.....etc. It's a BCS ORANGE BOWL WIN!!!! Enjoy it, how about it!!!!! How are the coots more deserving with losses to UT and Ga? Because they beat us??? Heck no!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I stated a balanced view rather than pure orange sunshine.

Jan 4, 2014, 5:46 PM

I stated the good, the bad, and the funny. In classic pumper fashion, you ignore my comments about the good and funny, focus ONLY on the bad, and you think there were no negatives last night? Tons of penalties, 2 boneheaded interceptions, a boneheaded intentional grounding (safety) from the end zone, blown coverages, and a missed extra point are all good? I'll bet the coaches are more realistic than you and will be focusing on those negatives come spring ball.

In the meantime everyone can to celebrate a good win over a good team. (Though I'm sure the previous sentence will be ignored by you as were the positives from my original post.)

Spurrier's jab didn't rely on arbitrary BCS selection rules.

Jan 4, 2014, 5:24 PM [ in reply to Re: I was EXTREMELY disappointed... ]

The reason that Clemson was in a position to win a BCS Bowl was that FSU (who spanked the crap out of us). It had nothing to do with SCar.

It's like you beat somebody up and their only comeback is that their girlfriend is nicer than yours. It's irrelevant and lame.

If Dabo had beaten Spurrier I'd be fine with Dabo saying it was a great year because we beat 2 ranked SEC opponents, won the Orange Bowl and won the state championship. That wouldn't be lame.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Typo. Sorry. Shoulda read that FSU is in the BCSNCG.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ummmm...

Jan 4, 2014, 7:23 PM [ in reply to Spurrier's jab didn't rely on arbitrary BCS selection rules. ]

who said it had anything to do with the coots?

"The reason that Clemson was in a position to win a BCS Bowl was that FSU (who spanked the crap out of us). It had nothing to do with SCar."

"It's like you beat somebody up and their only comeback is that their girlfriend is nicer than yours. It's irrelevant and lame."

no, it more like you beat us, BUT the BCS Orange bowl committee saw differently. They did not have to take an ACC team, but they did.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ummm... 2 SEC teams max allowed in BCS. Bama taken over SCar

Jan 5, 2014, 12:53 AM

The Orange Bowl has an ACC affiliation while the Sugar has an SEC affiliation, so the Orange took Clemson and the Sugar took Bama, though theoretically they didn't HAVE to.

But either way, per BCS rules there are a maximum of 2 teams per conference allowed in BCS bowls, so SCar was left out of the BCS bowls-- not because they weren't more deserving than Clemson, but because of the BCS rules and because Bama is a bigger draw than SCar.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Razzmatazz LOVED the announcers too!!! yep...

Jan 4, 2014, 8:56 PM [ in reply to Spurrier's jab didn't rely on arbitrary BCS selection rules. ]

they were just "telling it like it is" too. LOL

You make some valid points, but it's how you express what you're saying...with a cootish venom.

Dabo mentioned all of those comments basically because it was sooo obvious the announcers weren't!!!

but oh...the wanted to talk about how great OSU played & how much heart & pain they played with, but not what WE accomplished at all...and even moreso it seemed like they thought we lost the game & wanted to talk about the last OB instead of the one we'd just kicked A$$ in...???

he did what he had to do so that everyone would know what CLEMSON had accomplished, minus those pesky lameclucks (& he still mentioned the the things we'd screwed up too!!!)

GO EAT SOME LEAD PELLETS USuCkers!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are such an obvious coot. Why don't you stop referring to Clemson as "us?" There is NO us involved with you and Clemson.
Go away!
Haven't you even looked at the thumbs up and down on your stupid comments? There are very, very few people agreeing with anything you say. The only reason I even logged on was to respond to your lunacy.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why do coot fans care so much about what Dabo says. He

Jan 4, 2014, 4:46 PM [ in reply to I was EXTREMELY disappointed... ]

has a mind of his own and free speech. If you don't like it then mute the sound or turn off the tv. Btw I will take a BCS victory over Ohio St any day if I had to choose. Worry about UCS and their program.

well...therein lies the problem if you have respect for that MAN-CHILD!!!
respect his coaching ability, sure...you have to because he can win & coach a team.

respect Slurrier??? you should have your head examined for morals to see if you know what they are...

All that matters....

Jan 4, 2014, 7:27 PM

Is we won the game! It was very entertaining and we looked good on both sides of the ball! Both Sammy and Taj did things never witnessed in the history of the Orange Bowl. Ohio St. offensive line had 4 seniors, 3 of which are All Conference and our defensive front kicked their butts! Our linebackers were dominating, our offensive line was outstanding ! Hot Rod got his yards and was very consistent. Pinion had 6 of 8 touchbacks.
Come on man! I don't want to here ANY NEGATIVITY for a while. Dang Shuey played like he was on fire and let me tell you, HE COULD SMELL BLOOD! How long have we been asking for attitude like that? That boy thought it was Buckeye planting season! We will finish #9 and I'm going to enjoy it!
One other thing, Carolina fans don't like to hear Dabo talk because they're envious of his enthusiasm and the NATIONAL ATTENTION he gets. Sure, with his style he has a LITTLE diarrhea of the mouth but Einstein would too if he liked to talk like Dabo. I love him, players love him, recruits love him parents love him and you should too! Don't get me started again Lol (I can't feel my fingertips.

Jan 4, 2014, 10:18 PM

Morris was asking others to help him take pictures? That sort of feels to me like it was to "mark" the event as if he didn't expect to be a part of more of them.

I know he and Venables both want to be head coaches one day. But, boy, do I want them to stay and keep building.
