Did some research today on Big 12 stadiums

May 26, 2012, 4:55 PM

if we did bolt, Clemson would have the 4th largest stadium, however, the rest are pretty meager, the next largest being TT/WVU/OSU around 60K.

I guess I was expecting more from a football first conference. 12 of the 14 SEC stadiums are bigger than the 5th largest stadium in the Big 12.

I realize that stadium size doesn't directly translate into football passion, ala Rice, Tulane, etc., but it's a pretty good indicator.

Meh, its not that. Its more to do with population density.

ISU, KU and KSU are large public schools but they are in very low population states.

Baylor and TCU are both very small private schools.

Okie State's stadium doesn't have a lot of people but they are right on top of you and the atmosphere of the 60K or whatever feels like 100K. Its probably my second favorite venue in the conference.

OU's is by far the most intense though. That place is nuts. UT's holds 100K but it doesn't feel like it. The intensity isn't there.

I cant comment on WVU but I watched the Mountaineers play LSU last year and the atmosphere seemed electric. Tech, when they field a good team, have a rowdy bunch too.

Size of stadiums (as far as people go) is important but its more about the atmosphere IMO. That's what makes OU and from all accounts, Clemson so #### impressive. They are huge stadiums but the atmosphere feels like a college atmosphere should feel like. If your stadium only holds 50K and its packed and the fans are going nuts, it will feel like a lot more.

OU will be the second most intense as of 2013.

I've been to games at Gaylord Memorial, and the people are friendly, they support the #### out of their team, and they tailgate with the best of them...but the average fan age just seemed too high for them to keep it loud for four quarters.

Come on down to Death Valley and we'll show you how it's done...though you may have to come for something other than a Kansas game. :D

ones in Clem/FSU leaving the acc essentially as a 40k to 60k league.

No, I agree with that...

May 26, 2012, 5:12 PM

I just don't think this is going to be anything like going to the SEC and we shouldn't have those expectations.

SEC, but I honestly feel like the Big12 will rival the SEC in quality of product in football if they expand.

I think the SEC is just more of a college sports culture. Those states primarily are college football centric.

In the Big 12, its a bit different. The entire state of Texas is absolutely OBSESSED with high school football. College football and pro football is popular but both take a back seat to HS football. Friday nights in Texas, you will not find an empty HS football stadium in the entire state and almost all of them take on a college atmosphere feel to it. It really is unreal.

Oklahoma is more akin to what you find in the SEC. They are not HS obsessed and outside of the OKC Thunder do not have any pro teams so college is what they have and they love their Sooners. The Pokes are really starting to be competitive in football now so that gives those cats out in Stillwater something to be excited about. Bedlam is a terrific rivalry every year even though OU has dominated it, the atmosphere reminds you of any SEC game.

The state of Kansas focuses MORE on NFL football. 3 popular teams in the state. The Eastern half of Kansas are all Chiefs fans, the western half are Broncos fans and a lot of the people in the southern part of Kansas are Cowboy fans. College football is loved, but because Kansas has no natural recruiting base and HS football is not a big deal there, it is not nearly as fanatic as it is in Oklahoma or Texas. KSU fans have been pretty fanatical under Snyder who might be one of the best coaches I have ever seen but in general the state is more focused on NFL football.

I can't say much about Iowa State. I think they are awesome fans in general though. Ive stated this before here but of all the fans in teh Big 12, Iowa State fans are the most hospitable fans out there. They absolutely love their team and are very nice to opposing fans. Tailgating there is, from what I have heard, probably one of the better experiences you will have.

Obssession with HS football leads to a pipeline of college

hence the reason Texas supplies football top talent to dozens of top FBS schools and then the NFL each year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

according to this we'd have the 2nd-3rd biggest stadium

May 26, 2012, 5:53 PM

behind Texas (100,119) and nearly equal to OU (82,112). Clemson's is officially 81,500 (but we know The Hill can pack in a few thousand more) FSU's about the same as ours too, give or take a couple thousand.

Clemson would also be the 3rd smallest school enrollment behind TCU (9,142) and Baylor (15,195) - Clemson has 15,459. Everybody else is about 25,000+.

Yeah...majority of the Big 12 stadiums are small but has/are being upgraded. Majority of them won't seat nowhere near what Texas and OU seats but they are becoming nice stadiums. OSU, TCU, and TT are nice and Baylor is getting a new stadium.
