I keeping watching us, game after game, get off to good starts and then seemingly fade away. I've finally accepted the conclusion that I think most of us have, and it is simply our lack of depth. When you play a finite number of players over an entire game, they wear down over time. And when they are tired, they make mistakes or simply lose a step.
When other teams can substitute and stay fresh, they can maintain their momentum. Conditioning is an issue for our team and that also breeds injuries.
We saw what happened early in the season when we got big leads and then started substituting. It was a tremendous drop off in talent. This is the challenge with a young team coming out of HS. They simply don't have the experience and reps to fill in. You need backups with experience so that at least the second team can perform at a consistent level without much drop off in performance.
Say what you want about the portal, but most successful programs using it have significant depth advantages over us.
For me, this has been a huge challenge for us all year and there isn't an easy fix during the season. You have what you have and you just have to deal with the outcome. I really hope we create a plan to address our depth for the future in the offseason. We didn't get the numbers we needed from this last recruiting class so if we are ever going to consider using the portal, now seems like the perfect opportunity, especially with the addition of 20 scholarships.

Totally agree. However, if you give inexperienced players all the right coaching, but they don't have the reps to properly execute the coaching they have been given, the results don't really improve.

Lack of depth and no running game

It's very difficult to have a consistently productive offense when you can't run the football at all.
This RB room is killing us right now. Somebody on here said early in the season "we have bodies, not depth" and that's 100% correct. With Mafah in his current condition we don't have a single RB that would see the field for any other playoff contender. And we have one less body after last night too.

IMO, most of the players in the portal are there because they do not want to sit behind others (Stellato, Covill, etc.). I think more than a few of the recent decommits were of a similar attitude.
Do you really think these guys are coming to Clemson, just to sit behind Woods, Parker, Terrell, Klubnik, etc.?

Well, they are going to other schools and doing exactly that. Some work their way into the starting lineup, but many others are providing that functional depth that other teams have that we don't.
SMU coach did an interview last week where he stated he has 13 guys out of the portal as key backups providing the depth they need, and he said it was the biggest contributor to their turnaround this season.

Also, seemingly you can go to a lower level (ie fresno, Boise, Tulane, etc to find some guys that are ready now but weren’t in hs. Look at Scattabo for asu as an example

Simple, it’s coaching. Wes Goodwin has no business being the DC. Still not ready to throw the towel in on Riley. Not sure how much Dabo dibbles in the play calling. Spiller and several of the friend yes men coaches Dabo need to go.

"It's not the Xs an Os, but the Jimmy's and Joe's that make the difference." Actually, it's both, but the right talent makes coaching better as well...

Depth is an issue. Lack of elite (Early 1st round NFL) talent is an issue. Our coaching staff's failure to make adjustments to stay a step ahead of the coaches on the other side is also an issue. Defensively, we lack the aggressiveness and exotic blitz packages of the Venables years which makes us too predictable and easier to out-maneuver schematically. Offensively we mostly just lack consistency and seem to tighten up in pressure situations.
The first two are not going to get fixed without a friendly billionaire. The rest can be improved.

Someone finally gets it. The 1's for Clemson can compete with any team in the country but the big drop-off with the 2's is the problem. The depth issues really surface when it comes to special teams play. Use the portal to build quality depth. The concept of having 3 and 4 star player transfer and replacing them with walk-on's and 0 stars will eventually catch up with a team when the quality of the depth is tested.

We have to play-it-safe. Our offensive and defensive adjustments are nothing like previous years. It was different with Brent Venables and Tony Elliott. It was always a mixture of high pace, movement, schemes, and creating separation in the 1st half then putting it away in the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter was for player development.
It feels like the coaches get flustered and don't know what to do. It's like they are sending safe plays in until they figure it out...by that time, we have given up big plays or points. Then, we get on offense....a quick 3 and out. It feels like we're never in control of the game. We're always on the defensive.
