Deacs deserve respect -- and a whupping (long)

Any time you face a ranked team -- especially on the road -- it's a given that they deserve respect.
That's the case with the Deacs. After all, Wake is 3-0 against -- checks notes -- VMI and Liberty with an impressive road win at -- checks notes again -- Vanderbilt.
I know, I know: Our early season schedule isn't any more impressive. But during our first three contests, some aspect of the game has been notably lacking. A sputtering offense here, a step-slow defense there, things have been slightly askew. We've haven't had a complete game yet.
That's not the case at Wake. With Sam Hartman back at quarterback, there has been no "We're not where we want to be" from the Deacs. There's no sense that, like Clemson, it's a matter of young guys learning what to do or seasoned starters shaking off injuries. They have 40 players with at least 5 years of experience.
Nope: When it comes to Wake, what we've seen is what we get. And that has to be encouraging for Clemson. Why? Let's take a look at last Saturday's Liberty game.
Now, Liberty's no slouch, but a team with aspiration of another ACC title game cannot come within an eyelash (or a 2-point conversion) of falling to the Flames. Even worse for Wake, Liberty had no trouble stuffing their little do-si-do offense, forcing the Deacs into several third-and-long situations. With Hartman and his stable of receivers, this was an annoyance against Liberty.
Against Clemson's front line, it will be a disaster. Wake can't run the ball consistently. Look at the declining rushing numbers for Wake this year (200, 150, 20) and it's clear folks have figured out what to do. Crash down on the ends, assuming that Hartman isn't running. If your D line can handle things, it frees the linebackers to play back a bit to clog the middle and stop those short passes that have been eating us alive.
Yes, they have Hartman. They have Perry and Greene. But without time to throw to them, it won't matter. Wake is averaging close to 300 yards per game through the air, but Hartman has also thrown 3 ints. I'd expect Clemson to snag a couple more. If we have Mukuba and Wiggins back, and indications are they will be, plus Xavier finally in playing shape, Wake simply isn't going to have time.
On defense -- well, Wake's no better than they were last year. Liberty rans for nearly 180 yards on them last week, and that's because the Flames has more than 250 yards passing. I'm betting Clemson will use it's new-found offensive line matchups to run Shipley and Pate to burn clock and wear down the Deacs. Remember what they did to Wake in the Valley last year? Nothing has changed.
One more note: Liberty showed that the Deacs have an issue handling receivers out of the backfield. Fake a sideline pass, then drop the ball to Shipley into the open spot created and you're off to the races.
Did I mention we haven't really seen Antonio Williams and Adam Randall on the field together yet?
Put all this together, and as long as the Tigers play the game they're capable of, we should have this.
Wake deserves respect. But more than that, as the team that snapped our streak of ACC title game appearances, they deserve a beating to remind them who we are -- and who they are.
Gee-Haw'd!

Good observation Rev, and right on point. BUT, Wake's coaches have studied film on how the teams we've played to date have put up so many yards on us. Wake will do the very same thing and make us stop them, again but, Wake has the QB and the receivers to score on us in the red zone, and that is where our opponents to date has had a hard time doing....

A fair point, and Wake is well-coached.
Two things we showed -- or didn't show -- last week on offense that will have them concerned. First, DJ showed an ability to read the defense, pull it down and actually get some yards. This will give the Wake D one more headache and force one of their talented LBs to spy. Second, we haven't really shown our ability to pass to RBs out of the backfield. Wake's LBs are crashing a lot of the time, and the gaps on short routes should be there. Will we exploit them? Who can say?
On defense, I expect Hartman to top 300 yards -- again. He did last year and has his 2 games this season. But inside the 20, it's a different story. I'll give them yards if they give us points. Trade field goals for touchdowns and go home happy.

Defensively, we have to exert the same kind of pressure on

Hartman that we did last year. We started out the game last year living in the Wake backfield, and sacked him 4 times in the first quarter. We need more of the SAME this time around.
Great to see you posting again, and hope it's not just a "cameo"!

Knowing that Wake is having trouble rushing the ball, and that our D Line is miles better than anything they faced this year, look for a lot of empty sets and short slants from the Deacs. It's going to be frustrating to see them get more first downs than we'd like. But once they get to the 20 ....

Like a missing critical spice in a dish you’ve made for years. You slowly forget how good the dish was until you add it back into the recipe.

Personally, I feel that so far this season against the teams we've played, I hope there has been a plate, a bowl, and a frying pan of things this team should be able to do, that has been left out of the play calling waiting on our ACC schedule to come. I hope what we've seen so far, is just some things that our coaches threw together to get us past the first few games, and hasn't shown any of what's in the recipe/play book to be unleash on our ACC schedule starting with Wake at noon on Saturday. I know that's what I have been hoping for, it would explain why we have looked so bad to this point!!!

The WF D allows the exact same yards per game as the Tigers . I believe we end this game below them in that category. Go Tigers !

Hope life will ease off on the curveballs so we get to see more of your presence on here.
Share your sentiment about the trenches. If our DL can be the disruptive force we expect them to be, while our OL can open up the running lanes like last week, should be a long day for the Deacs. If Wake can hold their own in the trenches on both sides, we might find ourselves sweating one there in Winston-Salem for 1st time in a hot minute

Wake's O-line couldn't handle Liberty ...

21 yards rushing (half by the quarterback) last week and I promise that Clemson's line is far better than Liberty's. Plus, with Xavier back (awww, c'mon ... y'all KNOW he's coming back!) on a mission to improve his draft stock, Wake's line will be battered.
On the other side, The Deac D-line is experienced, an advantage over our guys. And they've got some solid linebackers. But they produced only 3 QB hurries vs Liberty and 0 sacks. They play to hold the line, rather than disrupt. That's why I think we'll go with more motion and tosses to RB out of the backfield.
Essentially, if we play clean and keep things in front of the secondary, this game is our's.
