Clemson official: ACC will have a seat at the table too (AUDIO)
June 5, 2012 By Kevin McCrarey 1 Comment

Bill D'Andrea

Clemson Senior Associate Athletic Director Bill D’Andrea told our South Carolina Radio Network news team that he doesn’t think there is much too all the talk about Clemson bolting the ACC for the Big 12. Despite the growing scuttlebutt about the Big 12 luring Florida State and Clemson and perhaps other ACC schools to join its league, D’Andrea doesn’t see Clemson changing conference flags any time soon.

“You know we have a solid conference, D’Andrea said. “I know a lot of people think we the ACC is going to get left out. But, you know here’s the deal: If Florida State, or Virginia Tech, or Clemson or Miami, is 12-0, we’re going to have a seat at the table too.”

Earlier this month the Clemson Board of Trustees met to discuss expansion. Chariman David Wilkins said after the meeting that Clemson remains committed to the ACC but would be willing to entertain a serious offer from another conference should one come their way.

D’Andrea conceded the ACC has “stubbed its toe” in football lately, but he still views the conference as a viable and profitable home for Clemson. He did concede the ACC is built more around basketball than football.

“[The ACC] is probably more of a basketball conference than it is a football conference, particularly with the expansion of Syracuse and Pitt,” D’Andrea said. But I don’t think there is anything to it (expansion talk).”

Jun 5, 2012, 5:22 PM

that Billy D either doesn't know anything (which I personally believe to be the case) or he's playing his cards very close to the vest.

I can't believe he uttered that last line. That's unbelievable that he would say that.

that if you complied a list of "need to know only" people at Clemson, Billy D would not make the list. I have known Billy D since I was a student when he worked on Coach Ford's staff. I can tell you from direct first hand wexperience, he's got a big mouth.

They have to lie for many reasons, but most of all, to avoid legal liabilities.

Exactly. I'm trying to remember, did he get an AD job when

Jun 5, 2012, 6:03 PM

Max committed his cardinal sin, or was Billy D retained by Hatfield? Because Max booted Ford in early '89, but Vickery didn't open till '91. What did BD do in between?

Furthermore, how did a relative newcomer to Clemson, and an assistant football coach, get the cushy job running Vickery? I always thought the whole thing was a bit odd. Especially since back then I thought he was kind of full of it and a BS'er. But I'm sure they wanted someone the football players saw as a friend versus a professor or administrator type.

Do you remember any details?

A one loss Clemson team last year was in the top 4 over the 1-loss Stanford. Heck, we even had potential to be in the national championship with our one loss to Georgia Tech.

With you it's like talking to the rock.

Last Season was a unique season. If you think the ACC schedule is going to remain strong enough for that to happen again and for the pieces to fall in place like they did, that rock bashing against your head is the brain inside.

Just saw on college football live, the commissioner's outside of the big 4 conferences are meeting in Chicago to decide what they are going to do about being left out of the BSC playoff. The Sun Belt Commission is on now. The ACC, The Big East, The Mac, Mountain West, Con USA, and the Sun Belt Commissioner's will be attending.

Jun 6, 2012, 7:50 PM [ in reply to Re: D'Andrea speaks on expansion. york_tiger, what do you . . . ]

Not leaving the ACC for numerous logistical and academic reasons. Extra $3M would be a wash with travel expenses. Do not fit in good with BigXii schools on many levels. If the SEC were to show interest we would talk in a heartbeat (best fit), would also discuss with Big 10 (possible fit). Rumors have damaged recruiting, competitive schools are using it against us. Also, ND coming to ACC is a very possible situation in the near future.
