QB competition the highlight of spring position battles
A week from today, Clemson’s coaching staff and players will suit up for the first practice of 2018 and the loudspeakers in the indoor practice facility will blare “The Boys Are Back in Town” as it begins. The Tigers return 15 starters on offense and defense and have a deep, veteran team, but there are still questions to be answered this spring. Full Story » |

Don’t fool yourself. Johnson, Brice, and Lawrence all are good enough athletes to run this offense and to be a threat to run themselves. We’ll be the same ole Clemson regardless of who is back there

I seems like most has forgotten that Bama and Saban had to beg their way into the playoffs with a lot of help from the playoff commission. And I honestly do believe that Bama was in the playoffs bc they felt that Bama was the best match up to take us out of the playoffs. And Bama done just that, they beat the crap out of us. I think that if Bama would have gotten what was due to them for losing a game at the end of their season to Auburn. Any other team in the country with everything the same as it was with Bama, they would not have been in the playoffs. When I personally think about the power of Big money, it makes it clear why Bama was thrown into the playoffs as the #4 team. Bama was the team that had lost a NCG to Clemson, and Bama was the only team in the playoffs that knew how to beat Clemson. With Bama out of the playoffs, Clemson chances of winning back to back NC's were good, and Clemson winning Back to Back NCG's wasn't good for pumping the SEC agenda for ESECPN/ABC or the Walt Disney Giant. As most know money rules, and with ESECPN throwing tons of money at the SEC, with Clemson/ACC conference team winning back to back NCG's wouldn't have been the best thing for the big business as in ESPN-ABC- and the big money deal with the Walt Disney empire. Yes I do believe that Big Money had everything to do with Bama getting into the playoffs, and to do with two SEC teams playing in the NCG. IT's all about who Big is putting their money behind in the wide world of college sports!!!
The GIANTS will always have their way, hey they are the GIANTS!!!

"Pro-style" according to the recruiting sites. All you have to do is watch the highlights of HJ and TL and you'll see very quickly that both are duel threat QB's.

I haven't heard it put any plainer than that, but it is the truth. It's just another way to racially profile when it comes to white and black QB's.
I want to say that i just heard that Billy Graham age 99 died last night or today. God Bless his soul!!!

option that mixes in the use of the read option, run-pass option, as well as characteristics of air raid, etc.
That's why we throw a lot of the screens to get the ball in the hands of our play makers, generally use the TE a lot (aside from this year), etc.
This past year we did tend to use the read option more than the previous two years, but I wouldn't say it's normally going to be read option heavy.

Well coolbreeze, IMHO from what I have seen from Johnson and Lawrence from their HS games, I don't understand how those two guys has been listed/labeled as pro style QB's bc I have seen both of them show great ability to scramble/run out of trouble and either tuck it and run for yards, or sling it on the run with pretty accurate accuracy. With our offense, we want need anymore talent than that to win a lot of FB games. If it's a name or a style of QB we need to put on them as our QB. I'll say that they are a pro style that can haul A$S if they need to, bc Johnson and Trevor can pick-um up and put-them down when needed to. We don't have to label them as a dual threat even if both of them can be when needed to be!!!

The difference between Clemson and Alabama....Kelly Bryant is automatically the starter and being praised for the season he had last season and overall it was a good one, but there doesn't seem to be any disappointment that we came up short in the playoffs. The mood would be much different in Tuscaloosa....

Maybe because Bama was expected to win it last year while we lost almost our whole O and were expected to finish behind FSU in the ACC.

That Vegas had Clemson favored in every game pre-season except Louisville on the road. Vegas got it wrong. Turned out FSU was broken after game 1 loss to Bama and Louisville was overrated as well.
FSU was very average last year.

Yes....we came up short this year....you know like Hurts & Bama did vs us the previous year. And guess who started for Bama all last season?....Jalen Hurts.
The whole D Line came back because they were disappointed as did Hyatt on the OL. They beat us 2015...we had a chip on our shoulders & won the next year. They got us in the first round this year bc they had a chip and was blessed by the Playoff Committee fairy for a 2nd chance.

It will definitely be an interesting battle. Even if TL is as good as DW4, Kelly Bryant isn't exactly Cole Stoudt...Kelly Bryant is just good enough to possibly play all season given our coaching staff, but not good enough to win us another championship in my opinion.

Hope they can bank TL and win the Natty with KB and HJ. KB is good enuf to go undefeated and win the ACC. It’s those next two that will be the test. HJ has not been under fire and could not beat out ZC in practice until very late in the year. Looking ok in garbage time vs WF etc. will not be enuf vs a Bama or UGa. CB is a sleeper. CB or HJ will back up TL once KB graduates. Expect a transfer next year from somebody. 4 scholarship QBs is too many.

IMHO dangerous to assume that with KB at QB we'll go undefeated during the regular season. Safe to assume that all of those teams watched our game against Bama.

Let the drama and fan comments begin again about whose best at QB for our Tigers. To me, we have easily the best group of signal callers and passers in college football. Any one of 4 could start for any FBS team. For myself, the coaches will assess the starting team and backups. I've no doubt, however, many will debate their choices over the next 7 months. ??

One thing is for sure, if KB can take us 12-0 and get us back to the playoffs, if Saban and Bama shuts KB down early again, we will another choice, and I believe Dabo will use the other choice bc this will be KB's last year, and our coaches won't let him lose another game. If they do, that is simply bad unforgivable coaching!!!

I'm very glad they didn't toss him into that fire. By the time we were down & Bama was bringing heat knowing we had to throw the ball, our OL wasn't blocking much at all. If you mean earlier when we were "technically" still in it, I still think Bama was getting to KB - who is a better runner - just about every time. HJ is going to be interesting to watch. I have a feeling he's going to have a HUGE say after spring and summer work.

KB was a good runner on the outside. He rarely would step up in the pocket and make a throw down field which is exactly what he needed to do against Alabama.
Our offensive line didn’t play particularly well against them the first two games, but then again nobody ever does. Just like our defensive line dominates pretty much everybody.

Our line didn't do great against them, but the first two games they had DW4 adjusting the blocking schemes and Gallman as another blocking option.
That was the biggest issue I saw with KB this year, pre-snap reads of the defense and making adjustments, as well as some of his reads on the option were off.
That being said, the whole offense just didn't really perform against Bama that night.

Agreed. I do think KB could have lead us to victory last year of that first INT never happened tho and I do believe he will improve on his pocket presence in the off-season.

Eventually, we hope. We really don't know if he's capable at this point.
He's still learning the offense, and that takes time. I think that is what held HJ back last year. We also have to remember that moving from high school to D1 is a big jump, for anybody.
I fully expect KB to be our starter this year, and do think he can win against championship opponents (whoever they are).
I just hope that if he's not 100% this year (Syracuse), we have more confidence to put someone else in before the game is out of hand. Maybe at the start of practice the week of?

The QB that presents a downfield passing threat while being able to RPO is the winner. I think I’ll leave this in the hands of the coaches. Y’all might want to do the same.

The slowest QB could do an RPO, which is either hand it off to a running back or pass it.
You're thinking of read option.

Nope, can't do it. KB had 3 years to improve his down field attack and it didn't happen. Now that we have two behind him that does have a down field attack with the accuracy that HJ and TL has with the added receiver talent that we have, and with the RB attack that we have, it will be a terrible waste of talent if we can't use it all. The down field passing attack will always open the running game, and with a powerful running game, it opens up the passing game for our heavy talented receiver core. No more time to be wasted on seniority players, give the ball to the very best we have regardless of how long they have been with team, and that means for 1 day or 6 years!!! Best only players play!!!

Lol, for 2.25 games? Then what happened? Oh, DW4 started over Stoudt.
That's actually an example that hurts your argument, considering DW4 started against USuCk over the senior Stoudt when he had a torn ACL.

If you were going to move your #1 QB from the year before down the depth chart, why would you do it after the spring instead of waiting until the fall? Also, Lawrence will be taking his first snaps in practice of his college career. He may be one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, but it's highly unlikely he'd show enough in only a few weeks to earn the starting job. Even if he did, why would the coaches name him the starter in the spring? What would happen then if Johnson or Bryant outperformed him in fall practice? Do you change quarterbacks again? Why not wait until that time to get a complete picture of everything before making any changes?

KB will do enough to keep the job. Said another way, KB will not do anything to lose the job. KB will run the table through the regular season as well as the ACC CG. And then what happens when he meets solid defensive teams? Sure, our O Line didn't play well against Bama. Neither did our RBs in a blocking role. Heck, our TE didn't block for most of the season - wasted player on the field IMO. I hope KB improves - I think he will. We all compared KB to DW4 - which is a tough comparison. KB did pretty &%$#@ good guys. Look at all the success Bama has had with far less talent at QB for YEARS.

Can’t even finish an article that starts so presumptuous.

It takes a genius like Saban to take out the starting QB in the national title game at halftime and win it all by taking a risk to do something that might work versus the insanity of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Hell, UGA almost won it all with a freshman QB - got closer than we did! Maybe Kirby is a genius too. I’d say what we did in the semi was not genius. And if we go into the spring with a foregone conclusion to something that shouldn’t be, shame on us - that’s not genius, that’s stupid!
