Dabo's comments yesterday about calling a kid's mom

Yesterday someone (may have been korncoot) asked Dabo about using the portal and his response was "I'll let you call that kids Mom and let her know her son doesn't have a spot anymore"
We lose 10-13 players yearly to the portal who choose to leave on their own. So if we have 10-13 spots come open with players choosing to leave, then whose mom would need to be called exactly??? It's open spots. We've just been filling them with HS players and not equivalent experienced portal players. And why isn't any media person pressing Dabo on this false premise?

I think Dabo is saying that before he tells a kid that he’s going to be forced to leave Clemson’s FB team (in order to open up a roster spot for a portal player), the honorable thing to do is call the kid’s parents and inform them of what he is going to do.
Does that help?

If we have 10-13 players leave into the portal each year NO CLEMSON PLAYER WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE! That's 10-13 EMPTY spots.
Does that help?

Maybe what he's saying is, if you bring in a portal transfer that will play immediately, one of the other players would lose his starting position or have less playing time. This would make "Mom" very unhappy.

9-3 or 8-4 and all the moms are happy. Sigh. I'd rather be 11-1 and they all hate my guts.

Kirby is probably okay with a conversation such as that with a mom. He probably realizes 13 mil per year means you have to have some unpleasant conversations.

With great power comes great responsibility. The head coach gets paid and is ranked with making hard decisions. Scholarships are no longer about scholarly endeavors. College football is professiionalized. Players are paid for results. If the results aren't there either don't take the NIL money or transfer out. It's not Dabos jobs to worry about feelings. He doesnt get paid to have the happiest team, he gets paid to win games.

Dabo should worry about fielding the best team possible. Not keeping parents happy. That’s probably why DJ started for so long.

What he's saying is we have 86 kids right now and only 85 slots based on current projected outgoing and incoming. For every kid we add today to this number, someone already on the roster has to pack their bags to make room for them. It's really a pretty simple math problem that even a Clemson liberal arts major should comprehend.

I taught math at a community college for 32 years before retiring. Central Florida area. Deep in the heart of Gator country. After I would work a problem I would sometimes say, "That's so simple even a gator could do it."
After the students groaned I would say something like, "I'm not talking about that school north of here. I'm talking about that dumb animal with a walnut sized brain. If you were going to be that sensitive why did you pick a dumb animal for your mascot?"

I am not being a smart-butt I believe according to scientific research gators have been around for ever, so they have to be somewhat smart to still being here for millions of years. I don't call that being dumb, their survival skills are extradonaire. Just saying.....

By that same logic we should never have a walk-on be given a scholarship. Yet, we seem to fill the roster out regularly with scholarship practice squad level players.

85 split up over 5 years equates to averaging 17 ships per year. You have to lose 8 a year (transfer, portal, quitting etc.) just to break even.
Roster management is an issue every coach deals with every year.
Clemson has far less attrition than most. That makes roster management even more difficult. Dabo and Kirby handle "forced attrition" far differently.

Clemson and other universities hire and pay coaches to win championships that's what happened to Clemson they won championships in various sports. Clemson doesn't hire coaches to be baby sitters and parent charmers.

Not sure what's hard to understand here. Dabo refuses to throw players in good standing off the team to create an opening for a portal player, which happens at all the big time football factory schools. When they have a guy come in and underperformed they run them off to create space for their next 30 player recruiting class or 10 player portal class. Dabo has made the decision to honor his commitment to the player instead of following suit. If Dabo did decide to throw low performers off the team somebody would need to inform the parents and I'm sure that would be a tough convo for anyone who isn't a POS. One can certainly disagree with Dabos stance here but let's not make it into some mystical or difficult to comprehend policy when we don't currently have any positions available for all the portal players everyone's dying to sign.

so you are saying you don't want a potential better player(s) than what you currently have at any given position to be added to the team? to make the team better?? for the current (and future) opportunity to let people know about your culture or brand or whatever? because if you are not trying to add better players every season you are getting worse. simple as that. get keep getting worse...to whatever outcome that leads to

Isn’t that like a business hanging on to C players because you like their values and loyalty more than results. All this does is weaken the entire enterprise.
Is this really what we are teaching our guys to compete in the real world?

Does Dabo call a kid's mom when they jilt Clemson?

That must lead to interesting discussions.
So he does not? So it's a one way street? That explains (one reason) why Clemson Football is losing ground.

Dabo's comments, and some of the posts that follow, make no sense, even though some have tried to explain.
So after the season, we have unfilled slots due to high school offers not accepted, kids de-comitting, etc., and losing some to portal. So with those open spots, what is Dabo saying....we can't fill those because they may compete for playing time with junior and junior's mom might get mad that he's not seeing the field? It's not about taking a scholarship away...it is about using an available one on a portal player. And from those on the roster, regardless of high school recruit scholarship player, walk on or transfer - play the best group of dudes!
And...to answer Dabo's question directly, I'd gladly call juniors mom! Junior needs to stop getting a trophy just for being on the team.

You pony up money like Phil Knight or Larry Ellison, and I bet Dabo hits the Portal hard and fast as soon as it opens. If not, you'll either have to accept the way he does Clemson business, or find somebody else to root for. Sorry, but that is reality. And a gazillion posts about it ain't gonna change that reality. The only thing that would is empty stands at the games, which is in no danger of happening. If the newly entitled fans leave, the ones who got pushed out to make room for them will most likely return.
