Dabos 2 week vacation lazy or tradition?

I already know i'll get a bit of flack for this one but i'll post it anyway. Clemsons season ended dec 21 as we all know, Dabo did a good job of paying enough to keep all clemsons key players for next year......I'm also assuming he did the end of the season player exit interviews?

Having said that, all the reports are very clear and specific that Dabo "informed Wes sunday night" he was fired........this doesnt seem to jive with David Hoods report a week in advance of that at least, as well as many other sites online. So i ask the question, which is true? why float out a nice lie for the media, what's the point exactly.

Also in regards to Dabo's vacation, i realize people can be contacted by zoom/skype in a variety of ways and they can meet in florida the same as clemson. but it strikes me as a bit i dont know "unbothered" i guess is the word i'll use, a pretty important decision involving your job (coaching the team) is at stake and he has no problem finishing the rest of the vacation, and apparently pretending the decision was made sunday when he was back, when in reality according to david hood was known at least a week ago.

Probably gave Goodwin a courtesy heads up to start looking and then made it official Sunday night.

I took two weeks off during the holidays and it want because I am lazy. I have worked for the same company for 29 years and if I don’t take my vacation time I lose it. Give Dabo a break, he just came off a long hard season and needs some downtime.

Let's see, didn't lose any starters to portal and fired the DC. Given there were 2 holidays in those 2 weeks, seems like he didn't just sit on the couch and eat Bon Bons.

Lazy??? Not hardly. I run a few businesses that are peanuts compared to the income and scope of being the HBC of Clemson. What you see and hear about his workload: multiply that by 10. When you see he’s playing pickup bball with his players: it’s because the man sacrifices sleep, family time, etc to do so.

The balance of family has to be somewhat maintained. So something has to give. For myself it is rest. I’m certain it is for him as well. Right now my businesses are in a lull. It happens every year. Early spring through late fall is busy times, the rest is “normal”. Normal being 40-50 hours a week. But I’ll be on a plane to St. Louis and back this week. Red eyes both ways. Then the next driving to Dallas to set up a new facility. To maximize family time in this “down time” I’ll work stupid hours in St. Louis and Dallas to get back home. I’ll work on the planes. In the airport.

Then when I get home I will die for a few days. But only for 8 hours a night. The rest of the time I will spend at my biz in Greenville and with the family.

And, again, I’d imagine what I do is menial compared to the stress and objectives he has to deal with.

Don't get caught-up in the timing or the details. At the end of the day, it simply doesn't matter. All that matters is that Wes Goodwin is no longer the DC at Clemson.

I presume you presume that Wes didn't know about being dismissed until Sunday night. I don't hold your presumption.

I also think you're ignoring the fact that Dabo's time has been consumed more by football and such work activities which distract from his family life. Any grudge of a 2 week vacation ignores the fact that Dabo has a cell phone and laptop which provides him with a cure for any emergencies which might arise.

As far as using the 'lazy,' word when accusing Dabo, that's outrageous and a horrible insult to the man's character.

Most people in a leadership position work during vacation. It is not necessarily intended that way but it just comes with the territory. I don’t believe someone like Dabo or any other head coach of any sport at the college level can totally escape from their responsibilities. So in other words, your assumptions and “question” are not relevant.

As for the timing, discussions take place along the way. When someone is terminated, you don’t officially communicate it until you have closed the loop with the individual. You also have to deal with contractual issues and close those loops. My assumption is Dabo called Wes last night and said, “Hey, I just want you to know we are officially announcing your departure tomorrow. I will be glad to help you anyway I can.”.

If you think that Dabo isn't handling is job ethically, or if you have problems with his character in the way he does his job, I would suggest you find a better coach and team. May I suggest you start with UGA, or NC State, or perhaps the Univ. of Cootolina? Maybe one of those teams would suit you better... and you can go post this kind of ridiculous horseshyatt on THEIR board instead of here.

Maybe this will help you understand why things don't just simply fall into place like you think they should. Part of this is my conjecture but given how close Dabo and BV are, I think Dabo wanted Brent to have a conversation with Wes before making anything official. There is also a buyout involved so if we could help Wes to his next home, he could simply resign and we don't have to pay the buyout.

David Hood reported Wes was "no longer with the program" which would open the door for Wes to speak about other opportunities. I think Dabo didn't want to hurt his chances by making a "firing" announcement until the OK situation played out. I am now guessing, but have no factual basis, that Wes may not be the next DC at OK.

This quote from an article I just read explains the complexity involved in this situation:

"According to VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs, Miami doesn't seem like a serious contender for Tim Banks. As he shared during a recent interview: “I don’t think Miami is a place that Tim Banks has much interest in... I don’t think anything’s going to happen there.” However, Clemson? That’s a different story.

The Tigers find themselves in a tricky situation. Their defensive coordinator, Wes Goodwin, is rumored to be a top candidate for the same role at Oklahoma, where his former boss Brent Venables currently leads the Sooners. Goodwin was rumored to be fired by Dabo Swinney after Clemson's terrible showing against the run this season.

If Goodwin heads to Norman, Clemson could avoid paying a hefty buyout that it would have to pay if they fired him instead, making the timing favorable for them to make changes. Hubbs described the scenario as a "financial waiting game," noting that Clemson is likely to move quickly once things are set in motion.

I don't care what job you have, everyone needs a week or 2 vacation a year. A football coach would die of stress and heart issues if they never got a break.

I’ve been one of the more critical posters of Dabos decision making of late, but one thing I’ll never call the man is lazy. The time, effort, and heart the man pours into our program is 2nd to none. If anyone deserves to take a family vacation at the end of the long road of a college season it’s Dabo.

The man has every right to a vacation to clear his head and refresh to allow him to make the right decision(s) regarding the future of the program before getting started on next season

I don’t blame Dabo for finishing his vacation with his family before doing anything official. Shows he has his priorities right. Family always comes first and one day when you’re standing next to a grave of one of those family members, you never hear “I should have cut that vacation with the family short.”

Glad you enjoyed you family vacation Dabo, now let’s get to work.

If he want's to go down to Florida with him family for the holidays I believe he's earned it. He's coming off an ACC championship season and playoff appearance. Even if you're a "what have you done for me lately" type there are only 4 major conference championships to be had and Clemson got one of them.

Forgetting of course Clemson has 3 nattys and he was coach for 2 of them and we have 22 conference championships and he was coach for 9 of them ( ZERO in the 20 years prior to his hiring), he's the winningest coach in ACC history, Clemson history, and.... He's doing it in a way that we can all be proud of.

Let's call it earned or well deserved

Yeah they make a ton of money so I'm not feeling sorry for em, but when they actually get time away they deserve to take as long as they can. Do you think doctors who work crazy hours 50 weeks a year are also lazy if they take 2 weeks to go somewhere on vacation.

It's been widely reported that Goodwin knew his fate right away and that his office has actually been cleaned out for over a week. Dabo was probably hoping that Goodwin would have gotten the Co-DC gig at OU by now and he could have exited gracefully as lateral rotation instead of a termination.
