Dabo Era Stats Snapshot (A Quick Look)

Dec 6, 2022, 3:41 PM

Portion of a lengthy in-depth look coming this offseason. TigerNet likes to compress picture attachments so I've included the PDF version as well (much better quality).

Interesting Things to Note:

-at least 500 yards/game on offense is when we have our best shot at not just making the playoff but having a shot at the national title (2017 being the one expection to that one).

-Our defense has mostly held serve on stopping the run, but the passing yards allowed/game has been trending worse. 230 yards/game is only 10 off of the worst the defense has been in the Dabo era (2012 was 240 yards).

-Another concerning trend is the amount of first downs given up by the defense. Giving up almost 4 more per game compared to 2018 and is the most in a single season since 2012 and 2013.

-A definite correlation with 1st downs on offense and points per game on offense.

-Will we see the offense approach 40 points/game next year? Can the defense get back to allowing around 14 points a game? When the offense scores at least 17 more points a game than the defense allows, that has meant we have made the playoff. A 21 point difference in 2016 and 31 point difference in 2018 (that 2018 stat is crazy to read while I'm typing this) resulted in national title wins.

It would be interesting to see how those defensive trends...

compare to the college football averages. Are passing yards up across the sport, and if so, are we doing better or worse than the average.

Good point, I'll put that on my list of things to add***

I don't need to waste time looking at stats because I know only Saban has won more games than we have and that's all I need to know.

Some of y'all are missing the point of this.....

Dec 6, 2022, 4:48 PM

this isn't to criticize Dabo. This is to identify what we've done well (and what we haven't) and to use those to predict the future. It's not a coincidence that 2010, 2014, 2017, and 2021 were the worst offensive years. Those were years that either forced change or largely resulted from change (not just the changing of staff but also the natural "life span" of players' careers). PPG from the offense went up over a TD per game the following season (including this year) and usually saw an increase for another year before leveling off.

I guess you could immediately jump to a direct correlation to the QB's but I think that'd be wrong. I mean that probably pans out across all football... but it's fascinating and helpful to follow the long-term rise or decline.

Thanks again.
