Dabo

Dec 7, 2021, 1:22 PM

We as fans all know Dabo's resume and accomplishments. He is one of the highest paid coaches in college football and he achieved that status because of his accomplishments on the field season after season. Unlike Jim Harbaugh at Michigan who has been at the top of the pay scale in college football for years and only this season beat Ohio State and made the playoff.

Dabo has known for years that Venables was going to leave at some point in time. You do not achieve the level of success that Dabo has achieved without a plan for everything. You do not maintain success without a good plan.

Dabo may not pay much attention to what people say or think about him. However, Dabo understands that the college football world will be waiting to see if Clemson's success was due to Dabo or his collection of coaches.

In many ways Dabo is like Bill Belichick. Majority of people assume the success of the Patriots was due to Brady especially after Brady won a Superbowl with Tampa. Belichick is out to prove he can win without Brady. Patriots have won 7 in a row and are in 1st place in the AFC doing it Belichick's way.

Dabo has a similar task ahead of him. He must replace his coordinators and deal with the transfer portal and NIL while still winning at the highest level.

My money is on the Dabo. He has proven doubters wrong his entire career and will continue to do so. Whoever Dabo hires for the coordinator roles will be the best person for the job.

I don't disagree with what you said but the timing of Venable's leaving could NOT have been worse. A lot of small issues have been building up over the last few years and the ### just burst. It's going to get worse before things start looking up again but our recruiting and roster management strategies have to be completely overhauled.

I was thinking about the Belichick/Brady thing in relation to Dabo and BV earlier. You're correct in that many people like to take credit away from Belichick and give the credit to Brady. Before Brady left you also had some people who wanted to take credit away from Brady and give all the credit to Belichick.

To me I say, why can't it be both? It's hard to argue that Brady isn't the best QB in NFL history based on his championships alone, and the same is true for Belichick as the greatest coach. I think they both helped the legacy of the other. I think both would've won super bowl titles without the other, and Brady has already won one without Belichick. I think one could argue though that neither would've won 6 titles without the other. I think both guys are showing their individual greatness right now and the rest of the NFL had the misfortune of dealing with the 2 of them together for a long time.

The point of my long rant is I think the same can be said about Dabo and BV. They're both great at what they do. I don't think it's a case of one guy made the other look better than they are or that one guy can't succeed without the other. I think they're both great and together they made each other that much greater. I think the combination is better when they're together, but both guys can win the whole thing without the other because they're both great at what they do.

My money is also on Dabo. But don’t minimize the challenge. That’s a lot for one man to manage at once. I know he has a plan, but having two back to back generational QBs (and other positions) can’t be dismissed from his equation for success.

Dabo has made some bad hires before but overall he seems to

Dec 7, 2021, 2:36 PM

be good at picking the right leaders. He did select Chad Morris who turned out to be a positive hire, then developed the co-coordinator system for the offense, which seemed to work as well. But prior to that he gave Napier the green light to try and create a new style "power spread" offense, which didn't work out too well.

He had the foresight to fire Koening, but the Kevin Steele DC hire, while not a disaster was not any kind of home-run. Obviously, when he hired Venables he made the correct call.

Overall, I think some of the coaching changes are a little underwhelming. I don't think Tyler Grisham is a great WR coach. CJ Spiller seems to be slowly growing into the RB coach position while Streeter seems to have lost his rising star status. Mike Reed has been solid and Todd Bates is doing well with the abundance of talent he has been given.

The fact that none of our coaches have yet to leave with BV is a definitely a positive.

I think the jury is still out on Grisham as the WR coach. He's only been the coach for 2 seasons now. If you're looking for positives then last year Rodgers had by far his best season as a receiver at Clemson. I think he also deserves a lot of credit for the way Powell came on last year and was a huge weapon for our offense after not really being a factor during his career before that point. EJ Williams was also starting to come on as a weapon last last season.

I think you could also point to the way Collins came on late this season as a positive for the coaching of Grisham as the freshman improved a great deal during the season.

I know it's hard to find other positives for this season on offense, but to the defense of Grisham the WR position has been snake bitten each of the last two years. Last season he lost Ross before the season even started and then Ngata and Ladson struggled to stay on the field for most of the year.

This season he had Ross back but we later found out Ross played hurt for most of the season and then we lost him completely for the final few games. We also lost Spector before the season started, lost Taylor early in the year, and had Ngata, Ladson, and Williams all miss most of the season. I just think it's hard to judge his ability as a coach when most of his guys haven't been healthy. I think he's shown success with developing the receivers he's had available though.

Dabo hates it when you refer to him as "the Dabo"

Dec 7, 2021, 3:14 PM

I'm surprised he withheld that nugget from you when he was divulging his coaching philosophy.
