First Clemson memory?

I was a late bloomer Tiger fan since my dad wasn't into sports at all. I was about 8 or so riding my bike while my neighbor was blasting Jim Phillips on his radio while working in the garage in the late 70's. I heard the classic "touchdoooooooown Tigers!" and my neighbor scream WOOOHOOO so I rolled over there and asked what was all the fuss about. Hooked ever since! You older guys remember that? Ha. Listening to Tiger games and Jim Phillips on the radio was the only way to keep up. My first game was in Athens between the hedges though, not Death Valley, when the dawgs shut us down 12-0. How about you?

1981 NCST/CU game. Me and my friend Frank listen to the game at my house on the radio. We also watched the national championship game together and drank a case of the Clemson orange can drinks before, during and after the game set off the longest fire cracker run after the game. I was in the 5th grade and Frank was in the 6th. We're still friends to this day and stay in touch.

my dad dropped me off for orientation on his way to drink and gamble at the Indian casinos up in Cherokee. I got suspicious when they showed us the hi rises and said they were the freshman dorms, especially considering they did not have urinals. Based on some intel I got from a chick I met at edgars the night before, I snuck off to see john stone and realized that we had all been lied to about the accommodations, and would be living in this #### hole instead. At this point it was too late because I already had been given a room assignment.

My dad wasn't into sports either. It was 1987. I was 6 years old and the SC game was coming up. Like a lot of kids in this state I had to pick a side. Needless to say I chose the tigers and stuck with them even though we lost. The next four years were great though with the highlight being that 45-0 whipping the gamecocks were handed in 1989.

5 years old. My parents and I were out to eat with my mom's friend and her husband who both were Clemson alum's, my mom being a chicken alum. Going back to the vehicles after eating my mom's friend pulled out an orange Clemson long sleeve shirt and gives it to me while saying, "Now you're gonna root for the Tigers, not your momma's chickens." Hooked ever since, thank you Clemson recruiters. Lets all be like Arlene and recruit the young one's early before they turn into a chicken. =P

7 years old, watching the 1978 Gator Bowl on TV with my mom, dad and older brother. None of us were big Clemson fans. Just pulling for the little team from SC with the young farm boy coaching his first game against the big team from Ohio St with a legendary coach. After Hayes threw the punch, I remember my mom telling me to never be a sore loser like that old man. I've been 110% Clemson ever since.

Freshman Year 1985 Dropped Off at Johnstone

First few months were an alcoholic blur sending me into finals with a 2.2. Came out of finals with a 2.5 and barely averted Dad killing me. Converted to a part time alcoholic thereafter and kept my 3.0. From my Johnstone E-6 window I could see DV's upper deck always a beautiful sight the night before gameday.

1967, 12 years old...one year after moving from Mobile to Charleston...ripping the heart from this, at the time, dyed in the wool Bama fan. Saw Bama play Clemson in the Valley...remember walking, it seemed, from a parking spot in someone's pasture! Six years later, a freshman at Clemson...as the tint of my blood quickly became orange...and has flowed as such ever since. No regrets!!

1940, eleven years old. Went over from Seneca to pick my brother up for the week end. Football game on old Riggs. Watched part of the game through the fence. All four brothers in family finished Clemson. It couldn't have been any other way because Grandfather rode a horse over and participated in laying the corner stone in Tillman. We were a Tiger family from the beginning.

I'm young, so my first Clemson experience was homecoming against Central Michigan a few years ago when we scored about 80 lol. But the first real Clemson memory I have that I will never forget is either the game winning TD pass at Miami in '09 or against Florida State in '09 when we blasted We Will Rock You across the whole stadium.

1978 Gator Bowl vs OSU
Jun 25, 2017, 12:40 AM
|

In '78, I was 11. Several of my mom's brothers and sisters had moved to Ohio in the sixties, so, a few of my first cousins called the house to talk smack about how the Buckeyes were a real football team and that Clemson was nothing because back in those days, you had to pay extra for a long distance call, so I figured this must be a really big deal... But little did they know that I knew absolutely nothing about Clemson or its football team because I am a Steelers fan and I only knew usuck for college football because my oldest sister went to school there. Since they were from SC, I watched the game to see this big time college football team that was gonna destroy my SC home boys... As the game played out, I was not impressed by osu and began to cheer for the Tigers so I could call my cousins back should they win. I gave the loudest cheer of my life when Charlie Bauman intercepted the GREAT Art Schlister and sealed the win... But then Woody Hayes threw that punch and I haven't let my Ohio cousins off the meathead hook since... Needless to say, I was done even passively with usuck, especially two seasons later when Willie Underwood got my revenge against the barnyard pimps with those two interceptions and I've been hooked ever since...

It had to be 90. The Navy had just moved us to Mt. Pleasant, SC from Santurce, PR. I was 10 yrs old and not a clue of the English language. I met a friend that didn't care about the language barrier. When I'd go to her house, her dad would be sitting there watching the Tigers play. I sat listed and learned.....learned to love the Tigers. The old man was an engineer. you can guess where he went to college....so did all of his children. I didn't have what it takes to be in a Clemson classroom, but I did have everything required to be a Tigers fan.

As a 1964 Rock Hill HS junior three buddies and I drove to Clemson for "High School" day. We bought cheap tickets at the High School window in the old west end zone. I-85 wasn't completed from about Jct with Hwy 29 to Ga line. Tigers won. I was hooked.

football - going to the NC State game in 1998 with my dad. I remember an NC State player making a ridiculous one handed catch directly on the paw (Tory Holt). The game was on Halloween so I remember after the game that NC State won a Wolfpack fan wearing a Wolf Head mask really freaked me out.
basketball - don't remember who we were playing but I remember Harold Jamison getting hurt at some point and they took him to the bench and started looking at his stomach. Being a little kid I found this odd so I was watching what was going in. Rather than take him to the locker room they laid him out on the ground near the bench and were examining his abdomen area.
baseball - Florida State series sometime lie 2000 or so. It was an unusually warm weekend in March and I remember going to play at the tree on the hill with my brother and sister. Some barefooted kid was at the top of the tree ( I remember thinking bare-feet was pretty bold for that time of the year) and the kid would not let anyone else into the tree. Even if we walked up and touch it he would scream. Very annoying.
olympic sport - Volleyball in 98-99. I remember getting a slice of pizza for a concession and then the Tiger mascot coming over and pretending to steal and eat my pizza, much to my dismay as a kid.
non sports - going to Newman Hall (I think) and getting ice cream on a lazy sunday and then sneaking into the classroom auditorium and drawing stuff on the chalkboard.

We were Clemson fans. It was like breathing, eating or walking being a Clemson fan and going to games just was.
I had an older brother by 4 years and most of my play clothes and regular clothes were of the Clemson variety as long as I can remember.
I do remember getting in trouble when espn came out with a 50 cent call line 1-800 number to get game scores. I would call the away games that didn't come in on the radio to get scores.
That first month we had 3 away games and my dad got the phone bill to the tune of $350 in espn calls to get the scores.the only reason I lived was I was calling about the Clemson game score every couple minutes. As a kid it was 50 cents. I had to work it off wink wink( I did work to help but we worked anyway) my mom saved my butt by telling my dad that's how much I loved the Tigers!
I was born last part of November 1967 and I'm sure like the rest of us I came home from Elberton, Ga. with a Tiger paw on. For my birthday every year I get our rivalry game.
Go Tigers!

Listening to Tiger football games at the local service station with all the other kids in town. As a side note, i think the whooohooo started then. In my faded memory, the play by play announcer (before Jim) would yell whooohooo mercy after big plays by our Tigers. Anyone else remember it this way. I'm not a whooohoooer by the way. My first memory on campus was at freshman orientation in 1970. The drinking age was 18, so my new classmates and I proceeded to get bombed in the shoeboxes. We made a giant pyramid with the empty cans. Good times.

I distinctly remember that long dark passage to life and the struggle I had with my competitors that hot and nasty afternoon. I fought my way out to freedom the following June and was born with a Paw birthmark on both cheeks. They were Glorious Orange with a Royal Purple border on my lily white butt. I jumped out of the nurse's hands and kicked the coot doctor across the mouth for having the nerve to slap one of our Paws, I was outraged at his disrespect. I haven't changed a bit though the Paws are a little saggy now-a-days.
I just passed my 65th birthday which fell of June 3, 2017. That's 6-3-17 or as we real Tigers say 63 to 17.

I have been going to the games since I was born in 1967. The earliest names I remember are Ken Callicutt, Peanut Martin, Mike O'Cain and Red Parker. I don't think I have any specific memories of the pre-Tiger paw era, so my earliest memories are probably from 1972-1973.
Some fond memories: going to the canteen before and / or after games to get souvenirs walking around the stadium after games to collect stadium cups; smelling liquor in the student section sliding down the grass corners of the stadium on cardboard boxes running onto the field after the games parking near Riggs Hall to tailgate We sat on the top row of the south stands; later our seats were removed and we moved to the first row of the upper deck. Our family had those same seats until 2014. I now sit four rows above those seats. My newest, fondest memories are of my kids at the games.
