SMU coach as ACC Coach of the Year

I realize the SMU coach accomplished a great deal this year and the ACC football coach of the year honor was justified. But, they have filled their ranks with portal transfers and their SoS was quite low. It still gets me that no national pre season publication picked Clemson to win the ACC football championship and we did. With 9 ACC Championships and 2 National Championships, Dabo has only won the honor twice in all his years at Clemson. Looking at the list of winners from the last 20+ years, it seems like the coach who made the biggest publicity splash usually won. Duke has won 3 times in the last 12 years and came in 2nd this time. Really?

It is odd that DS has only received the award/recognition twice in 16 years as the HC...and ACC Champ 9/16 years. The coaching does frustrate me a good dadgum bit sometimes....mostly it's the OC....but, DS has really done a phenomenal job the past three years....even though we might not realize/appreciate it sometimes.
I feel like Lashlee deserves it this year. ...but, yea, all the portal players....just seems to lessen it a bit.
Go Tigers!!!

When Dabo retires, he is a sure fire first ballot College Football Hall of Famer even if he never coaches another game. Many/most of these other coaches who win short term awards will never even get nominated.

Generally, the coach of the team favored to win the conference title doesn't get coach of the year award. Fair or not, it goes to the coach of the team who over achieved based upon preseason expectations. Fair or not, that seems to be the way it works out...

1. Though Clemson wasn’t the consensus favorite among ESPN talking heads/major publications, betting odds had Clemson as a close second/cofavorite in most markets.
2. SMU was entering their first year of not only ACC play but power 5 play in over 30 years
3. Why should coaches be dinged for using transfers, especially if they can make it work ? Isn’t it arguably a coaching feat to get all of these guys from different programs to gel together and consistently win.
4. I agree Dabo should have more coach of the year awards …but this year it isn’t close , Lashlee definitely deserves it!

Great points, and provided them without bashing the other opinion.

SMU coach was the right call this season, no matter how much we may not

like it.
CDS has been so successful that sometimes these awards work toward an "upstart" season, thus SMU undefeated in conference play is a pretty easy call.
And I did not realize CDS only has 2 coaches of the year in ACC, incredible.

You can wish that Dabo got it, but that doesn’t require begrudging that Lashlee won it. It wasn’t a bad pick.

If you're picked to finish high, it's hard to get the nod for COY. Although,

SMU did have a roster full of portal players but so did FSU. Totally different results. A good chance it was coaching!
