I agree. I have literally never called a Clemson fan a "Tater". It's almost like calling someone a poo poo head.

A coot is a duck so it doesn't make sense but where does Tater come from? Is it like the hillbilly term for "potato" since we are thought of as a bunch of country bumpkins?

The term "tater" comes from IPTAY. Carolina fans joke that IPTAY stands for "I Pick Taters All Year." Combine that with Clemson's history as South Carolina's Ag college and the country bumpkins thing, and you can see how "tater picker" or "tater" stuck.
