Comparing today's Tigers to those of years gone by

is like comparing a 2013 automobile with one from 1960 (or 70, etc.) Many of the players from years ago would not even be able to get into Clemson. Also the changes in the rules of the game favor the offense much more than 20-30 years ago. All the additional games inflates win totals, passing yards, tackles and all other game stats.
Danny Ford was coaching at Clemson when I first joined IPTAY, and I will always consider him as the coach that really turned Clemson into a national power. Dabo, however, is building something at Clemson. I'm not sure that he will be "THE coach" that we all want, but I'm just going to enjoy watching.

Good post. Many sports have changed since the 80s and it is tuff to compare.

good post...i go back to the mid 70's

i will tell you that i despised our offenses under Coach Ford. In fact, they cost us games every year except in '81. Our offense in '89 killed the most talented team we may have ever put on the field. What i will say is that our defenses, especially in the late 80's were the best defenses we've ever had and many of those players could play now, especially at DL and LB. Some of our DB's back then had superior ball skills and played the secondary with an outright arrogance for the football. We caused fumbles, batted passes, and hit like we were angry....gang tackling. Our offenses lately are exactly what we've needed for years. Our defense is getting there. I never ever want to see us go back to the "I" or option, or some other run based offense under any circumstances. Once our D truly gets where it can be under BV, we're going to see true Clemson defense with the new Clemson offense and that's going to make us nationally relevant year in and year out. I'm talking Top 5 relevant every year.

Go back to 60's here and I'll take Danny and his offense.

Pretty good winning percentage! That being said, I am all in with Dabo as well, but those putting down Danny show a lack of knowledge of fundamentals in football.

i'm in no way putting Danny down at all

not even close. What i'm saying is that our offense back then had a difficult time pulling away from people and often times stalled out in games where our D was dominating. I'm not talking the WF or VT's of that time. I'm talking about losses against Duke and NCSU and GT when we had so much more talent than they did that it was comical. Our '89 team and '82 teams were loaded to the gills and managed to get stoned on offense because of a predictable scheme that kept the D on the field too long. If you took our '80's D and this offense today we'd have won multiple NC's, without question.

Direct comparisons are useless, yes.

However, you can still judge their standing among their peers. Even in this age of high flying offenses, some at Clemson have separated themselves much like Fuller, McFadden, and the others whose names adorn Death Valley did in their eras.

I like Dabo and I like our high flying offense but neither is a comparison to the Danny era.Danny had a real good offense and a shutdown defense.Danny's teams beat a lot of big names in FB .Okla.,Neb., Ohio St.,Ga.,Stanford,West Virginia and Penn St. He even run the run and shoot against ole Joe in the bowl and caught them completly off guard. They practiced for the triple option. There will never be another coach like Danny.Oh,i nearly forgot, add Fla.st.to that list.

Well said. However it was nice to see a stifling defense in the first quarter like we did when I was here in 81. Game is so different now. Much more sophisticated and with better trained athletes coming out of high school. Not to mention the huge difference in revenue.
