Yep, it's easy to recruit a championship team when you recruit as if there were no rules at all that prohibits wrong doings. Yes Sir, any school in the country can build NC team doing it the way that Tennessee does it!!!

It is my personal opinion that the NCAA is just as guilty of rules violations as Tennessee is bc, if a university has committed more than 200 violations, it shows that they don't respect any of the rules, and when the overseer of the rules fail to punish a school that has shown total disrespect of so many of the rules, that could only mean that they're just as guilty as the university that has broken more than 200 of the rules!!!!

The NCAA clobbered Clemson football for much less in the 80’s, and the ACC piled on another year of probation!
Then I went to SMU and we got the death penalty (deserved) and the football program has never recovered.

Then I see what the NCAA does to UNC and Tennessee (our last 2 opponents), and see proof of a 2 tiered NCAA enforcement system!
After the Orange Bowl, the Tennessee fans were jerks, on par with UGA and coots!

Makes me proud of the way Dabo runs our program!

Go Tigers, Whoop Dook!

Respectfully, postseason bans aren’t super realistic anymore. They punish more parties than just the school. In 2020, LSU FB and Auburn BB essentially volunteered for them because that year was going to be a mess anyway. Outside of that, I doubt you’ll see many of them going forward.

Since the NCAA doesn’t want to punish players or coaches who weren’t around when violations were committed they better figure out a way to speed up the investigation process. Going forward there should be two penalties: No transfer portal usage allowed for 4 years; No NIL deals allowed for any players for 4 years. Scholarship reductions are meaningless with NIL and fines are meaningless for SEC schools awash in cash.

Then you would still be punishing the players that did nothing wrong.

Coaches and administrators should have more skin in the game. Penalize the coach and AD's, fine the institution heavily.

Life isn’t always fair buttercup. If a kid is deceived by a coaching staff that engages in violations, he can lay in the bed he made. You choose your school. If you choose poorly you can sit in the mess made by people you believed. Without cautionary tales as deterrents mistakes will continue to be made.

The punishment should be so severe that nobody wants to risk it in the future. This is almost like zero punishment. I want uga to get their full measure of punishment, as well. Again, it should be a real deterrent to everybody, but it really should punish the schools who are guilty.

You cannot enforce NIL reduction. It’s not paid by the school. And it would be illegal to try.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: NCAA fines Tennessee $8 million for more than 200 infractions

Jul 14, 2023, 2:43 PM

If you are a member school of the NCAA they can enforce rules on member institutions. You break rules you forfeit “advantages” other schools have. If a kid is getting an NIL deal he can’t play for a school the NCAA penalized. Since the school isn’t “providing” his NIL deal they surely don’t have to keep him around. Go play somewhere else. Now of course none of these violations should ever occur in the future since all of the payments will be legal under NIL and then the coaches won’t have to lie about the payments.

Re: Agreed. You would have to find a way to

Jul 14, 2023, 9:10 PM

You have provided the correct answer.

Reducing the roster now, regardless of when the infractions were committed in the past, will get everyone to understand that consequences of cheating can still negatively impact the football program far into the future.

No existing players are affected. If existing coaches decide to leave and go elsewhere (which further punishes the school), then that is a further (well deserved) consequence that the football program must bear.

Finally, all contractual conditions for current coaches which stipulate penalties to a coach that leaves the football program for any reason are null and void. Too bad that the school’s football program will suffer more in this case.

Tennessee also brought in their new AD (Danny White, from Central FL) in January 2021.

It is time frame for when TN started their “exemplary” cooperation with NCAA investigators.

Very likely that this move by Tennessee’s chancellor and trustees was made when they learned that Team Pruitt had been doing bad stuff. Looks like that move worked for both TN and NCAA (and most importantly, also for ESPN).

It’s all just a big whitewash that doesn’t impair the entertainment quality of ESPN’s broadcasts of SEC football broadcasts.

Death penalty means a TV ban.

No TV coverage for an SEC team means when they play Bama, UGA, LSU... those games cannot be televised.

No way that a death penalty will go to an SEC member, not even Vandy or Mizzou. It would impact their TV coverage and thus their giant pot of SEC TV moneys.

Keep the SEC money machine printing money at all costs.

After SMU, there is no more Death Penalty!
Officially, it was committing another offense while on Probation.
Habitual offender….. Only used once, never again.
The NCAA would rather have Tennessee’s money, than destroy their program.
SMU was expendable…..

Re: Ok so what exactly do you have to do to receive the Death Penalty?

Jul 15, 2023, 5:16 PM [ in reply to Ok so what exactly do you have to do to receive the Death Penalty? ]

The Death Penalty is Dead with NIL. Short of egregious/illegal behavior (PSU), I don't see how any of these little wrist slaps even matter...especially in the SEC.

What SMU did, what USC did, Reggie Bush's mom's house, etc...all of that would have been legal today given the wild-west created by NIL.

Cutting official recruiting visits? Cutting a few scholarships every year? Reducing hours of contact with recruits? Pretty simple to solve if you have the boosters that throw the cash at the problem.

"Sorry son, we can't get you on campus for the Alabama game, but how does an extra $6k sound if you come the following week?"

Pathetic. But again, I am proud of the way Dabo runs our program and proud of the accomplishments we have EARNED instead of tried to buy.

28 scholarships lost over the next five years. Normally I would say THAT is about the only consequence of this punishment, BUT, with NIL, they can pay a player the equivalent of tuition and the problem is solved. Preferred walk-on status. So, no punishment whatsoever.

Re: TNET: NCAA fines Tennessee $8 million for more than 200 infractions

With the combination of the portal plus unlimited NIL money, TN can run off any weak 2nd team players and buy top end replacements.

Teams that can arrange for big NIL money will get past modest level scholarship reductions.

No one will ever notice any decline in on the field play with TN football.

I DO know that Georgia Tech "lined" up "tutors" from the pep squad and cheerleading team to help their basketball players get through the academic year back in the late 80s and early 90s. That came from a GT cheerleader and a GT kicker that were both family friends. My guess is that this sort of thing runs, or at least ran, rampant in all of college sports. But to single out The Danny as a lone pimp is quite shameful and unexcusable. So there.

Heupel is now the coach, not Pruitt. Heupel runs a clean program and will have to put even more emphasis on it over the next 5 years since UT is on probation. All the players that Pruitt recruited illegally transferred out the moment he was fired. UT had 31 transfers when Pruitt left. You was spanked by a bunch of recruits Heupel brought in.

The overall institutional climate at TN makes cheating part of the culture at TN.

A private company that accidentally poisons civilians gets punished long after all managers and employees who were responsible for that poisoning had been fired. All Stockholders of that company during that time when profitability went into the tank got punished, even though most stockholders were not involved in the crime.

Now make the following substitutions:

University of TN for private company
Fans of teams that TN plays for poisoned civilians
AD and Head Football Coach of TN for all managers
Assistant coaches and football support personnel at TN for employees
TN boosters and fans for stockholders
Football team won / lost record for profitability

Now you understand why TN’s recent ‘get cleaned up’ initiative should not obviate far more consequential punishment than TN actually got.

I didn’t read your post before posting my own below, but it’s interesting that you wrote pony after I talked about SMU.

Keeping two set of books?

It doesn't get much more sleazy than presenting a fake legal document while keeping the actual document hidden. Thugs.

So still bowl/playoff eligible. Guess the NCAA doesn’t want to punish the SEC in a whole if you think about it. So that’s means the VOLS are getting off with a slap on the wrist.

Hence they didn't get caught, and Pruitt did.

Amazing, but I can guarantee Texas A$M was worse and nothing will be done to them once again. It’s always all about money and Aggie has plenty and they’ve been cheating since before time.

The coolest Aggie cheat was done with Eric Dickerson from Sealy, Texas. They bought him a brand new maroon Pontiac Trans Am and this was in 1979. He said he was signing with them and drove his maroon car through College Station to play for SMU. The Mustangs got the death penalty for not only paying players, but offering their own daughters as a form of prostitution to the players they were buying. Not their own actual daughters, but the daughters of their fellow alums and rich people. Either way, they deserved the death penalty.

FSU has been doing that for decades, too, but to ease their supposed consciences, they used Florida A&M girls instead of ones from their own school. Or, they were more racist and didn’t like the idea of offering white girls.

I love college football, but there’s places ya just don’t go.

Daddy Haslem just laughed and looked under a seat cushion to pay that fine and move along. If they want to impose fines that will have any meaning it's going to have to start at 20 mil. Anything less is pocket change and the cost of doing business in the SEC.
