Coach LaPrad and Fort Dorchester, NIL at HS, this is BS trickling down

9

Jan 20, 2023, 9:29 PM

There is a thread about Coach LP being fired. I just typed a huge backstory about LaPrad and my connection but it got lost in cyberspace and I am not doing it again.

Basically I wrestled for him in the 80's, wrestled against his team, and played football against him as I was Berkeley and he was Sville. He coached wrestling and won many state titles. He also coached football under the winningest HS coach im the world, McKissick. He was asst for McKissick for many years as they won many state titles.

Then LePrad moved to Fort Dorchester as an ew HC and had won 3 state Championship and lost the state championship this year against Dutch Fork I think.

That said, LaPrad os a winner everywhere. He had many titles under his belt and he coached me in life and never once felt like we were mistreated. He has coached HS for 40+ yrs.

But now he is stepping down from FD because he used some foul language because he was fired up!

***The Reason!!??*** Money offered in HS sports, or the same as NIL in College. Basically he heard rumors, called a team meeting and found out that several players were transferring schools because they were getting paid to transfer (not sure what school). But his team that just missed the state championship was being dismantled by someone paying players to go to a different school. In the meeting, CLP was trying to keep his team together and not getting sucked into pay to play. But after he learned the money was too enticing, the players have committed, he went on a cussing rampage. He never hurt or endangered a player, he just let his vocabulary flow woth his thoughts. Players told the principal and HCLP decided to step down as one of the best coaches in the Lowcountry for over 40yrs.

This NIL crap and the weakness of the NCAA to try to correct anything is going to destroy every last play of college sports in the next 5yrs.

HCLP is a great father, coach, mentor and person in a community he grew up many boys to young men. His step down does him zero recognition for the good he created in our community. This is a sad time in Student-Athletes sports.

every year. I've seen some crazy school 'rezoning' to get/keep players in certain schools. LOL

Well this is HS players transferring schools due to monetary gain. This will cause havok in schools. I know there are times schools assist player's parents to get them to move to a private school. This is what happened with Milton Jennings. Good player at smaller public school, Pinewood Prep paid for a house for parents and free tuition at $12000 a year private school. 100% recruited Milton to private school.

So this has happened for years at private schools, but the number of kids have been so miniscule that it only affected a few kids in the state. But when you have one of the larger schools on the state that has to have a meeting with players about staying together as a team as the players were getting plucked off to go to other public schools strictly based on money, this is a problem.

50 years ago, here was how it was done.

A kid was in the 7th or 8th grade. He was a great athlete at that age and showed a lot of potential. Dad would be offered a job in the school district with the great football program. It wasn't always just across city. Sometimes it was out of state.

This occurred when I was in HS in south Georgia in the 1960s.

It was still happening years later. Just follow the HS coaching career of Rush Probst.

But blatant monetary offers to HS kids to come play at certain school is horrible new development. Yes, maybe one super-stud was tampered with in the past but not multiple players on one team.

This starts to remove education as a priority at HS level. This could start affecting the students ability to get accepted to colleges. Plus if college coaches see a kid was chasing $$$ in HS, how many schools would want to take a chance that the kid would be around a year later.

This whole NIL with no regulations is going to kill all college sports until they just say no more and press for minor leagues.

I am disgusted and frustrated as I used to love waking up Saturday morning to either travel for a game or to eat a big breakfast and watch Gameday. I didn't watch 2hrs total of Gameday this year and watched maybe 10% of college football that I watched just 3yrs ago, excluding Clemson of course.

If I remember correctly, coach LePrad was the wrestling coach at Irmo High School when I was wrestling for Jim Barnes at Airport High School in the late 70's.
We always beat them, but LePrad always had competitive teams. I hate to hear this crap has affected his life like this. The United States of the Offended is canceling many good people in this day and time. It is truly sad what has become of this nation.
Just my opinion for what it's worth.

I cant speak for LaPrad prior to Sville in the mid 80s. He was in his 30s so he could very likely have been at that school prior. He has coached all his life so maybe that is where he was planted and he spread wings from there?

Exercise is a white supremacist concept according to the modern left (I'm not kidding) which would explain their sudden desire to destroy sports at every level.

They are young to be getting offered money from schools to play in high school. It’s wrong on so many levels, these kids aren’t ready for this.

It’s going to destroy sports as we know them & the fact they are striving to get a great education.

The "Student Athlete" verbiage will be lost grom our vocabulary in a few years unless there is a definite distinguish between Professional and Student-Athletes? Im not sure they can play in the same systems? How could starters on the same team be professional or students? This is going to drive nails in the future of college sports.

Instead of D1-D2-D3, schools will be recognized as Pro-Conference or Student Athlete, that is only way we hold players to respective rolls and allow smaller schools compete in a system.

I hope the distinctions is an option and I would vote for Clemson to go with the Student-Athletes scenario. In the long run, I bet the patrons, alumni, and fans would follow the Student-Athletes games more-so than semi pro.

I understand your anger but the NCAA has nothing to do with NIL. As far as high school goes, I have no idea what the High School League could do but if the county has school choice, maybe nothing. Sad state of affairs for that to happening but it has been happening forever especially at Private schools who give scholarships to athletes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Goofs been paying/enticing players

1

Jan 20, 2023, 10:16 PM

as long as theyve been playing football.

I played at a particularly boujee private school that didnt pay players (in the form of tuition-free attendance despite failing entrance scores) to join us but we lost to lots of schools that did.

It was white collar cheating I guess but I learned then that the world isnt fair and cheaters can and will prosper.

And then I read Ecclesiastes and realized it'll all work out in the end.

I’m also a low country native. Sad seeing how this is playing out. I know former players and former player parents will be coming out in droves of support for this man. He’s a great man that devoted his life to making great men.

And regardless of popular belief….to make a great man….you have to yell.

He has mentored thousands of young boys on their journey to Manhood. The fact that he yells and cusses in a heated discussion about players leaving for money at a team that would likely play for another state championship this season, shows passion!!! But in the era of Snowflakes, he is expected to and is going to step down as head coach.

My dad is full Army, i grew up in foul words being part of the conversation. I here teenagers cuss worse than my dad in McDonald's, Chk Fil A, Walmart, etc, but a coach that mentored thousands, using cuss words in his passionate speech and is asked to step away is horrible.

My football coaches cussed all the time! Never questioned if they should lose their job. It was passion that they wanted the players to have the same passion.

10-12 yrs ago I made a comment about the "Pu$s$fication of America!". If I only knew then how fast we were headed to a new level?

i never met leprad, I graduated from fort before he got there. I was at a regional wrestling tournament when he was at summerville and one of his guys got dominated. When the other wrestler came to shake his hand he just angrily waived him off. Never cared for him after that.

Re: Coach LaPrad and Fort Dorchester, NIL at HS, this is BS trickling down

Jan 21, 2023, 3:36 PM

Well , sorry you got that impression. I was coached by him in wrestling, he did it free for the summer league. All the matches in the summer were tournament style. We didn't have to pay anything but we had to donate gas money for travel and we had to buy our own food . LaPrad wasn't paid a dime for his coaching, he coached just for the love of it. We won a Tournament at Spring Valley(Forest) in Columbia and LaPrad took all of us to Pizza Hut for a great win. He paid the bill for 20guys, 15parents, etc to all eat pizza and drinks.

I have respect for LaPrad. He didn't charge me to be coached wrestling by him. He loved helping kids even if I was from different district. Though he did know I was good wrestler and a good football DB.

He helped me get recognition which wasn't easy 20yrs ago. No offers were made. I remember the Berkeley coaches came to my house to make sure nothing fishy happened. The Berkeley coaches wanted to make sure that my parents knew I was an asset to the team.

All that said and I got my hand broke in practice between a RB and Safety's helmet collision and they smashed my hand.

Put me out of sports for 6mos. Never got my 4yr college schollie back. Got Football at Gville Tigers which was Junior College then. I got Gardner Webb, Citadel, Presbyterian, MTSU, and few others that I didn't know back in the day. Lots of small school offers for both wrestling and football.

But I know it was LaPrad that put my name out there. He had great wrestlers going to Duke, Iowa, Nebraska, Penn St., etc. My own school didn't promote me like LaPrad did. And I am sure that is how he helps his players today.

LaPrad is in his 70s now and maybe its time for him to retire and enjoy the good life. I surely hope his career doesn't end on a serious bad note of a passionate cussing speech

I feel like there are alot of details missing here

Jan 21, 2023, 11:16 AM

It's not that easy to change high schools. You can go private but SCISA is very small time so that's probably counter-productive in most cases. You can literally move the family to get into another zone or illegally use a family members address, or possibly move in with the other parent or something if family is separated. Most of those options are pretty difficult.

And who is offering HS kids money? There isn't a great deal of incentive to do it at that level so I can't imagine the money being offered is too significant.

I dunno, I would like more details on this and also on what coach said to the kids.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I feel like there are alot of details missing here

1

Jan 21, 2023, 6:48 PM

Pretty sure the system changed 10-15yrs ago. There were restrictions as to where students went to school but that changed several years ago. As long as it is in the same district of tax money paid, you can send you kid to any school on that district. While the responsibility to get kid to school is on the parent to make it happen if the student is not using the prescribed bus route.

So, basically if your parents feel like School B is better education wise vs School A, then you are welcome to change your child's attendance to School B. The school will not change bus routes to accommodate your school change, so that means you are liable for all transportation at the new address. The Student will likely meet new accomadations?!

So you’re telling me a guy who coached at Summerville under McKissick

1

Jan 21, 2023, 12:35 PM

Is whining about another program stealing his players? That’s one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever read.

I’m sure a lot of those teams he decimated back in the 80s would get a great kick out of it too. Man that’s a good one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So you’re telling me a guy who coached at Summerville under McKissick

Jan 21, 2023, 1:19 PM

Of course McKissick recruited players back in the day, but most of those players that were worthy would not get the coaching, exposure and opportunity to better themselves like they did at Sville vs some small 1A school. Plus in those days it was often that the player just moved their address to family member in the district or another player. But they were not directly paid thousands. Money may exchange by giving a parent a better job.

But for a big school like FD to lose players to a much smaller school without a chance to win the State Championship but strictly moving because financial gain.

Tell me where that is good? Tell me why a coach should be fired because he gave a passionate speech with some cuss words when he has dedicated his life to coaching young boys.

Nothing about the scenario makes me happy about the future of college sports and this is HS.

Jan 21, 2023, 12:44 PM

It seems this is a bad situation going on in some HSs in S.C. The easy fix is for the
SCHS League to say, if we find out any HS kid is being paid to play for a school or to
transfer to a school that school season will be cancelled immediately.

It would not take but one or two schools seasons being cancelled for it to stop. At some
point you have to be willing to do something drastic to stop this type of thing.

Colleges have to figure out their own solutions to that massive problem.
