55 - Clemson Ice Cream '55 Exchange

The Clemson ‘55 Exchange has been a wonderful Clemson staple for decades. Anyone who has ever been to Clemson’s ’55 Exchange knows how outstanding it is!!
According to Clemson.edu:
'55 Exchange
Where Tradition Flavors the Future! The '55 Exchange is a student-run business enterprise that designs, manufactures, sells, and serves Clemson’s world-famous ice cream, shakes, coffee chillers, fresh cold brew coffee, smoothies, and other Clemson products like blue cheese and t-shirts. Made possible by a generous gift from the Class of 1955 all revenues generated through this student-led entrepreneurial center go to support Clemson students and their academic and professional training.”
https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/icecream/index.html
Clemson.edu also adds the following:
“The '55 Exchange is Clemson's very own student-run ice cream enterprise. We are dedicated to producing consistently delicious, high-quality products and are proud to run a self-sustaining business that engages students in all aspects of the operation, from manufacturing to sales. Whether your sweet tooth prefers ice cream cones, smoothies, sundaes, shakes, or a fresh cold brew coffee, we've got you covered!”
https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/icecream/index.html
Handcrafted Magic:
One of the reasons the ’55 Exchange explains that the ice cream is so great is the handcrafted individual touch. As part of that handmade process, for example, Clemson’s ’55 Exchange makes small batches at a time. As explained in Clemson.edu:
“Batches so small, our production line is called a ‘microcreamery’! Every week Clemson students make this ice cream in six-gallon batches, one flavor at a time.
What it means to you? A lot, it turns out. Crafting our ice cream by the batch allows us a level of quality control that you don’t get with big box brands. To us, it looks like our incredibly high standards being met each time. To you, it looks like creamy, rich, flavorful perfection in every bite!”

Serving the Community in More Ways than One:
In 2019, Clemson’s ’55 Exchange held an event to educate the public about our country’s Pledge of Allegiance. According to Clemson.edu:
“The Class of ’55 Exchange, Home of Clemson Ice Cream, is holding a special event geared at teaching the public about the Pledge of Allegiance. This year’s “I Pledge for Ice Cream” is slated for 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 3, with free ice cream for children 12 and under. The Class of ’55 Exchange ice cream shop is located in the Clemson University Hendrix Student Center, 720 McMillan Road, Clemson, S.C. 29631.
Allison Butterbaugh, of the Clemson Food, Nutrition and Packaging Science Department, encourages everyone to come out and learn some history while eating delicious Clemson ice cream.”
https://news.clemson.edu/clemson-announces-i-pledge-for-ice-cream-2/
Also Serving the World:
Clemson’s ’55 Exchange seeks to benefit the world! According to Clemson.edu, the Wild Tiger flavors support the majestic tigers that have become endangered:
“Wild Tiger®
With the creation of our bold and adventurous Wild Tiger® signature flavors, we’ve embraced the cause of saving tigers around the word. Anchored in our time-honored values of integrity, honesty, and respect, our Wild Tiger® signature flavors represent the ideals of sustainability, global engagement, and the Clemson Spirit.
Established by Clemson’s Class of 1955, the 55 is a student-run enterprise that produces #1 Ranked University Ice Cream in the country (College Magazine).”
https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/icecream/handcrafted.html#:~:text=Batches%20so%20small%2C%20our%20production,one%20flavor%20at%20a%20time.
Expanding Flavors:
In 2019, the ’55 Exchange introduced a new “Flying Tiger” ice cream flavor. According to Clemson News:
“The new bold and adventurous Wild Tiger flavors are created by students and are designed to represent the ideals of sustainability, global engagement and the Clemson spirit. These flavors are produced on campus and are only available at the ’55 Exchange.
Created to promote Clemson University Tigers for Tigers Awareness Week (T4T) and Clemson’s Military Appreciation Day, Flying Tiger is a delicious Indonesian vanilla bean ice cream laced with swirls of purple blueberry jam. This ice cream is handcrafted by students in Newman Hall on Clemson’s main campus.
“We selected pure Indonesian vanilla extract for this flavor to promote tiger conservation because Sumatra Indonesia is one of the few remaining places in the world where tigers roam wild,” said Frances Schueren, a junior food science and technology major from Philadelphia, as well as a ’55 Exchange brand ambassador. “The swirls of purple blueberry jam are our salute to honor the 10,000-plus Clemson alumni who have served in the armed forces.”
https://news.clemson.edu/clemson-55-exchange-introduces-its-newest-wild-tiger-signature-ice-cream-flavor/
The same Clemson News article also explains the origins of the Flying Tigers name:
“The Flying Tigers, officially called the 1st American Volunteer Group, were pilots who flew and supported strategic missions in the Pacific theater during World War II. The squadron’s pilots flew Curtiss P-40 Warhawks, all-metal fighters and ground-attack airplanes, painted with a menacing shark-mouth designs that eventually became iconic. Twenty of their pilots qualified as “aces” because of their unmatched skill in air-to-air combat.”
https://news.clemson.edu/clemson-55-exchange-introduces-its-newest-wild-tiger-signature-ice-cream-flavor/
Blue Cheese History:
Speaking of history, it is worth noting that the blue cheese was originally stored in a tunnel. According to Style Blueprint:
“Fast forward to 1940 when a professor from Clemson A&M College Dairy Department started toying with the idea of a research project. The idea was to cure a French-style blue cheese in the tunnel. The dairy department started experimenting with it, and that was the beginning of something delicious! Why cure cheese in a tunnel? It was quite simple, actually: The moisture level in the air produced a perfectly damp environment just right for curing blue cheese. … The onset of World War II in 1941 brought change for the dairy workers at Clemson A&M College. Team members had to enlist in the war effort, and cheese production had to be halted as the milk used in the cheese had to be rationed for aviation cadets stationed on campus. Clemson A&M was able to purchase the tunnel in 1951 and resume their cheese project in 1953 with D.H. Graham, a recent Ph.D. from Iowa State College, joining the staff to oversee dairy product research and the cheese production.”
https://styleblueprint.com/charlotte/everyday/clemson-blue-cheese/
The blue cheese might not be stored in a tunnel anymore – but it is still quite beloved!

Can't go to a game day without a stop for ice cream - it could be 30 degrees and freezing rain and I still would have to stop there. Football parking was in the Hendrix Lot for a while so it was convenient - especially on hot days, get a triple scoop cone and eat it in the air-conditioned lounge upstairs watching other games on TV before our later game started!

South Carolina Highway 55 is a 20.99-mile state highway that runs from the west end at SC 5 near Kings Creek to the east end at SC 49/SC 274 near Lake Wylie, going through Clover. Clover65 is from Clover; I haven't been posting in Hill Watch on Sundays, but with this being his old stomping grounds and his legend status, I had to. Also, this was the best map pic I could get.
Clover, South Carolina is a town of about 7,000 in York County at the intersection of SC 55 and US 321. The Revolutionary War Battle of Kings Mountain took place 8 miles to the west on October 7 of 1780. But the town began in 1876 as a railway stop between York 10 miles to the south and Gastonia, North Carolina 12 miles to the north. Tracks were laid and a water tank was constructed for the railway's steam locomotives. Legend has it that overflow from the water tank kept a patch of clover growing and the railroad stop was called "the clover patch". The town was incorporated in 1887. Besides Kings Mountain State Park about 10 miles to the west, Crowders Mountain State Park is about 10 miles to the northwest, Rock Hill is 10 miles to the southeast and Lake Wylie is 10 miles east. So Clover is in the middle of everything.
Tommy James and the Shondells comes to mind.

Thanks for the post , and for the Tommy James reference - as I have posted before "Clemson and Clover" over and over has been a part of my life since the '60s even with the major changes each has had over these years. My mother just turned 96 years old and lives on the site where she grew up with a view of Highway 55 out her front window.
When a teen, we would go to King's Creek to cut cane poles that grew in a big patch along the bank to fish with since we couldn't afford rods and reels - loved to catch crappie at the other end of Highway 55 in Lake Wylie and catfish below the train trestle crossing the Catawba near Fort Mill. Before environmental rules, a processing plant there dumped waste directly into the river - not unusual to see dozens of chicken feet in the water - imagine how well-fed those catfish were!

Highway 55 used to run through the very small town of Kings Creek - it was on a very sharp curve with a big store located in the bend - not much else, someone decided to get rid of the curve and now, the straight road bypasses whatever is left of the town - nothing to see there at all. There was also an operational gold mine there which is gone now as well. Between Bethany and Clover , another mine was located on Henry's Knob which was a small mountain standing by itself among much smaller rolling hills. I think what they got there was called kyanite ( you will need to Google that to find its purpose). They took the top off the mountain and kept digging lower and lower - could hear dynamite explosions when I was growing up as they blasted the rocks away to go deeper. It was an eyesore with the open hole at the top with excess soil and rocks being cast over the sides of the crater to roll down the slope - before they closed the operation down, some of the rocks had reached the edge of Highway 55 that wound its way around "The Knob" as it was commonly called. It looked like there had been a large avalanche that barely missed the road. I think there might be some sort of recreation area on what is left of the mountain now but not sure since I moved away.

76er missed this one.
There are times when hitting TU doesn't register, even when hit multiple times. One can come back later to finally get a registered TU. Something screwy with this playgrownd we're in.

Try to figure out the Leaderboard for TNet Coins. Somedays the coin total won't match the number of awards given and how far you move up or down in the "Yesterday" totals from one day to the next are off.

This is the type of service that I would need to be paid for.
You can message the webmasters to see if they would look into this.
