Not the worst idea in the world if people rely on you for food.

But maybe it's crazy. I say let SF try out stuff like this and the rest of us can join in only if it works out. California is historically a great test lab for new laws, some of which are nationwide today.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

The proposed bill says they have look for a remedy/replacement before closing.

From an article that actually explains it:

The newly-proposed bill in San Francisco begins by classifying supermarkets as being essential to the vitality of a community and, as such, “the closure of a supermarket can have widespread effects on a community’s well being by reducing access to food and creating food insecurity.

“Supermarket closures can have an especially dire impact on senior citizens, people with disabilities and people who lack the means to travel by car or public transportation to supermarkets outside the neighborhood,” the ordinance says. “To safeguard the interests of workers, including the employees of some supermarkets, federal and state laws require large businesses to notify their employees of their intent to close or transfer ownership of the business.”

The ordinance acknowledges that the Board of Supervisors recognizes a supermarket may conclude that it is to its economic advantage to close when it is no longer profitable to stay in operation.

“This Article 57 does not preclude the owner from making such a decision,” the ordinance authors write. “Nevertheless, given the life-sustaining services a supermarket provides to residents in the neighborhood, and the important role it plays in strengthening and stabilizing the community it serves, an owner has a responsibility as an integral part of that community to undertake a reasonable effort to work with neighborhood residents and the City to explore opportunities to remain open for business, or to identify a replacement supermarket.”

They continue: “Through this Article 57, the City seeks to leverage community and City resources to ensure that neighborhoods are not left devoid of supermarkets and residents are not left without access to supermarkets; that supermarkets continue to serve the community even when there is the possibility of a supermarket closure.”

"The City seeks to leverage community and City resources to ensure that neighborhoods are not left devoid of supermarkets and residents are not left without access to supermarkets."

According to the bill, affected individuals can initiate a lawsuit if a grocery store fails to comply with the closure notice requirements. The course of action could range from seeking damages and injunctive relief to declaratory relief or a writ of mandate to fix the violation.

If the city cared about grocery stores it wouldn't allow criminals to steal them out of business. That's typically an industry that operates on razor thin margins so if they are getting their inventory carried off there isn't really any way to remain economically viable. Seems like the solution to this problem, which is entirely created by left wing scum both in the ruling class and the stealing class, would be to prevent theft instead of passing stupid laws making them give notice, like that's going to do anything other than increase the theft before they leave. And nobody is knocking down SFs door to move in and be the next willing victim to left wing criminals nd left wing politicians who protect them at all costs.

Unless SF is going to massively subsidize each ‘essential’ store that is being forced to stay open for 6 months before the store closes, and to also provide security detail for each manager in the ‘ess3ntial’ store, then SF should ####.

I missed it in the article where SF had agreed to do this. Maybe the leftists who agree with SF’s edict already know that the above is part of the ‘big plan’ to ‘protect the people.’

Xxxxxxx

Moving on from those stores that must provide 6 months notice before closing, has anyone thought to how SF would attract new stores to take the place of the ones that were finally ‘allowed’ to close?

Undoubtedly, thousands of ‘replacement’ stores would be tripping all over themselves trying to get permits to open up a store in SF to take the place of each store that vamoosed.

Yeah, that’s it. That’s the ticket.

This is crazy - how can it be constitutional?

Okay, so what is the definition of "Open?" Can it open for 5 minutes/day with one employee to check customers out? Or, can they open from 1 am to 2 am?

Is the gubment going to require the private business have certain hours and certain employees on site?

Will the gubment prescribe pricing remain the same or threaten management with jail time for price gouging? Otherwise, the store can just double all the prices.

We've already fallen on the slippery slope.

This is it - watch it happen sheep...
