Clock Management

Dabo always seems to leave the other team with too much time.

Im completely confused by this post. When was clock management an issue? Our last "significant" possession of the 1st half went as follows: took possession with 5:10 on the clock. We had a 2:58 drive of 7 plays and 71 yards which resulted in a touchdown pass from the 10 yard line. Were we suppose to not attempt to score on 2nd down and take a knee and then hopefully score on 3rd down from 10 yds in order to run 40 more seconds of the clock? FSU only got the ball back with 2:12 on the clock and I think they only had one or two time outs left. Their score was due to the defense giving up consecutive passes of 11 yds and 38 yds followed by a 15 yd pass interference. Please tell me you are not referring to the "true" last possession of the 1st half when we got the ball with only 0:22 on the clock and no time outs. If you are I do not even know how to respond.

So is it the clock management at the end of the 4th quarter you are referring too? If so let's look at that possession. Game is tied. We get the ball on the 44 yd line with 7:03 left on the clock. Allow me to repeat that there was almost half of the quarter left when we took possession!! We only have 56 yds to go to the endzone (not 99 yds which would take more plays and thus more time). We run 12 plays (including the penalty play) gaining 32 yds. This is our second longest drive of the game. Six of those plays (over half) are running plays (which generally keeps the clock running). The remaining 6 plays included 4 completed passes (clock keeps running), one pass interference on fsu, and only ONE incompletion. So only one play out of the 12 resulted in the clock stopping. In addition, on nearly every play we ran the clock down to under 5 seconds and on at least one occasion we snapped it with 1 second on the play clock. We ran off 5:18 on a short field drive which was aided by a 15 yd defensive penalty! Unfortunately, unrelated to the time left in the game, the drive stalled and we missed the winning field goal. fsu got the ball with 2:12 left in the game and took only 1:33 to go 41 yds in 8 plays (5 yds/play) and all of their timeouts before the defense held them. Please explain to me how we could have left less time on the clock for fsu.

Just like at the end of the first half, if you are referring to the last 0:12 second possession I am left speechless. We had no timeouts left. After a 13 yard run we were left with approximately 5 seconds on the clock. Since there has to be at least 3 seconds on the clock to spike the ball that left us with 2 seconds to get to the line of scrimmage and get set and snap the ball. That wasn't going to happen. Now if you are referring to the decision to run the ball instead of passing the ball on 1st down that isn't really a clock management issue but instead a play calling issue. Personally I think there would have been much more risk {interception, sack, fumble with scoop and score (that never happens right?}, etc) trying 2 or 3 pass plays as opposed to hopeing to break a long run and if not playing for overtime.

Also using up all of our timeouts led to us not being able to try a field goal at the end of regulation.

Before the half. We should have milked as much time as possible.
