is wrong with college football. Will Shipley declared for the NFL Draft. This SHOULD have clarified our situation immensely. Phil Mafah is the clear No.1 going into next year, with current backups and incoming freshmen spelling him and fighting for an increased role.
But, what is reality? Reality is, right now there is behind the scenes tampering going on, illegal inducements most likely being thrown Mafah's way, to try and get him to leave Clemson and go elsewhere. Why do I say this? Because, every article or post I see says, "Hope Mafah stays", or "Will Mafah stay".
In earlier times, this wouldn't even be a question. Phil WOULD be back as the starter on a team that SHOULD be Top Ten next year, and secure a Playoff berth. But now, we have this uncertainty. And, to some degree, the coaches have to lock down this situation before they can move forward with concrete plans for next year. That will almost certainly come at the cost of some bigger NIL package, to fend off the illegal inducements I spoke of earlier.
The NCAA got neutered in court enough times that they will not touch this issue. A majority of people are finally beginning to see that college football as it exists right now is in an untenable situation, but no one wants to take the reins and broach a possible solution.
A first step could be this: Make EVERY NIL deal given a college athlete public knowledge. Right down to the last cent, documented in a database for all to see. With all parties named, and their school affiliation known. This would at least stop the wild rumors of amounts being given out.
Second, and this is probably the toughest part, the players themselves need to be honest and report tampering violations. A lot of the foolishness that is going on right now could be avoided if players named names and gave testimony to out these shady characters. With contracts known and public knowledge, it could be easier to get them to come forward.
Thirdly, put some guardrails back on the Transfer Portal. If a player's coach leaves for another job, he is free to transfer with no penalties. But, on the other hand, if the player is trying to transfer for a big payday, or more playing time, they should have to sit out a year, just like it USED to be. And, there would have to be EXTRAORDINARY circumstances at play to allow a SECOND foray into the Transfer Portal. And by that, I mean a SERIOUS medical situation involving an IMMEDIATE family member, Mom, Dad, sister or brother. No ailing grandmas allowed. Sound cold, but it has to be, or someone will try to game the system, just as they are doing right now.
And, just a a ludicrous ending, I vote Paul Finebaum to oversee all this change. If nothing else, it would keep him busy enough so that I don't have to hear him on radio, or see him on tv. And, it would quickly become clear to all just how much of an SEC Shill he really is. He would undoubtably have different rules for the SEC and everyone else, get indicted, and hopefully jailed for all time.

Agree with 90% of it. I don't want to see restrictions put on transferring once. Wouldn't want to penalize someone like quadzilla or helms. Both great kids that came to a school, gave it their all and realized pt was limited at best. No problem once someone graduates.
That said, if the other rules you suggested, my 10% disagreement would be all but eliminated. I truly believe that.
I will say I agree with Arizona's coach. Said nil should be public and shared equally among the team. Point being there's good solutions out there and 98% of college coaches say they are for the changes. Which is why I can't understand why it's not being demanded.

I'm not against your proposals, but there are significant issues with them.
1. NIL deals are strictly between the player and a 3rd party organization. You can no more demand those deals be made public than you can demand Patrick Mahomes disclose how much State Farm is paying him.
2. Agreed, any time there's tampering players should report it. However, if said player is offered a "deal they can't refuse", what's their incentive to report it? They'd lose the deal. I don't see it happening.
3. Unfortunately the US Federal Court in West Virginia has ruled on this, players are allowed to transfer as they see fit. Only way to stop this is to make scholarships multi-year contracts that can be used to restrict players from leaving, but like coaches there would have to be a buyout clause.
It's common knowledge that schools work with their collectives on NIL deals to entice or keep players, but legally and technically schools are not in on the NIL deals. I personally question the amounts tossed around about how much all of these players are getting paid. If half of the reports are true, then some colleges NIL deals outstrip some NFL team's payroll for a season. There's no way that is sustainable. The NIL collectives rely on donations, and even the rich are going to get tired of paying millions a year.

These are Colleges and Universities. The Presidents can impose academic standards (graduation rates) to the programs. you only graduation 98% of players, then you get 98% allotment of total players on the team. 41% then you only get 41% of total allotment of players. (uga would pay a big price currently)
Now, this would make the coaching staffs be very selective on taking any transfers unless they are recent grad students.

There is a less than 0% chance that UGA's president would tell Kirby "Sorry, you only get 41% of the allowable 85 football scholarships because that's all that you graduate.
I doubt any school would impose that penalty on their teams, they'd only be hurting themselves. No kid with NFL hopes would go there.

If a car dealership or pizza restaurant pays a player for an endorsement, I don't think you can legally require the business or player to disclose the amount paid.

76er - I agree in large part to what you are saying.
The tampering is the biggest thing.
A kid that is in the portal = "fair game"!
A kid that is on a roster "should" = "unapproachable"!
Take away that schools ability to go to a bowl or a CFP if caught tampering with another schools roster. By boosters that represent that school; though - not sure how that would work!
If it's a booster though as someone suggested; they have to have been told a specific players name to go tamper with. An email, a recorded conversation, something will come up.
Leave these kids alone. Let them decide. I think some of these kids in a few years will come out and tell us " a lot of what's going on now. What school did what and how"!
That's when you may start digging down into more change. The players themselves spilling the dirt.

Assuming our NIL funds have a limit, I much prefer we use them to keep proven players versus renting a player for a year.

How? Outside of UGA what school wouldn’t have a drop off if there starting running back got injured. The OP stated Keith Adams JR isn’t going to cut it. That is an opinion. He has looked good in his limited action. I would agree it would be terrible roster management if we loss both ship and Mafah. Mafah returning is good roster management.

I might caveat and make no restriction on the following.
1.Freshmen who realize they made a choice that is not for them unless they have been starters. These are 18 and 19 year-olds that don't always make the best of decisions right out of the gate.
2. Those that have played in fewer than 3 games in the previous season (not realated to injury) and have never started.
I would also add serious penalties (financial and suspensions) for any team recruiting players from other teams who have not announced for the portal and no portal announcements until their team's season is over...meaning bowl games as well. No recruiting and no contact...not so much as a text saying "good game" until a player announces his intent to transfer. Every transfer and coaching staff should not be entitled to privacy, meaning they should be subject to surrendering all of their texts, emails and phone records if the transfer is investigated.
I have absolutely no problem with transfers that are above board and post-season. If they think they have better opportunities elsewhere then let them go.
Yes, put Paul Finebaum in charge of it. Great idea.
