Clemson's defensive front seven

Aug 6, 2013, 11:26 AM

Per Mickey Plyler I see that Crawford has one sack in 827 career snaps. Beasley had like 8 last season....that's nine. How many other returning starters had sacks? Why should UGA's Oline which returns it's two deep/both tes be concerned? That same Oline gave up less than 2 sacks per game in 2012 so one could reasonably expect the same results in 2013. So i ask you tigernation, with due respect of course, where are the sacks/the pressure are going to come from?

So say an opponent runs 60 plays a game thats basically 4 full games. This year he has put on weight and is ready to assume a role as a starter. You will know Vic Beasley by the end of the night ill promise you that. Also Corey Crawford is in the beginning of a so called "contract year" for whatever reason Clemson's DE's seem to have the light turn on about their junior year. I wouldnt underestimate them to say the least

I will just be interested in seeing how he plays as an every down type of DE.

Watch the weigh-in

Aug 6, 2013, 11:37 AM

Josh Watson and Vic Beasley (just to name two) would give a five All-American O line fits. Last year, the numbers are skewed because it was the first year of a new defensive coordinator, and some guys were finding their teeth. All those guys are back, look bigger and better than ever, and have something to prove.

Not to mention that last year does not equal this year. Yeah, your O line will be good, but don't act like you're going to drop 60 on us with Murray unscathed. Stupid dawg.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Watch the weigh-in

Aug 6, 2013, 11:48 AM

based on the numbers i'd say my questions were legitimate . As far as dropping 60 (which i never predicted)on you if Venables can't generate some kind of pressure a number close to that will be reasonably attainable.

Year two in a new defensive scheme doesn't always assure better results...the same could be said about year 3 as well.

You're honestly trying as hard as LSU fans did prior to the bowl game to convince yourself Clemson isn't capable of beating your team and we are beneath your team....it's not like we haven't seen this before. Wonder how they are holding up nowadays inside their fortress of excuses outside the top 10. Come August 31st, you may just see a team coming at yours better than last years, better than any stat you wanna dig up...it's not like they are trying to go backwards, though you keep trying to convince yourself of that as if we lost tons of defensive guys...oh wait..or as if the offense only had 2 playmakers (I've watched you practically say that with your lack of notice of McDowell's capabilities, who did a big 1st down run against LSU the announcers thought was Ellington...who was the one that had Clemson initially winning vs SCar in the running Clowney couldn't stop before we abandoned it). I'm not worried...just hopw your team thinks like you....the same way LSU and their fans did..until...

Re: Clemson's defensive front seven

Aug 6, 2013, 12:31 PM

I merely asked who would provide the pressure/sacks this season. I seen many a tiger fan claim nothing short of greatness for your front seven. You lost your top sack man to the nfl and as far as i can tell most are relying on Beasley to be the man....and he may be but at 242 lbs....well we have tes bigger than that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The reality is, DE is a big question mark. There's talent

Re: Clemson's defensive front seven

Aug 6, 2013, 12:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Clemson's defensive front seven ]

Just as said...Beasley was the sack leader (no, it wasn't Goodman), so obviously, most would assume he'd be again, but should be more productive. Now obviously, things are always still a question, but if you really look at majority of your topics and posts, you tend to easily show a hard bias to thinking you don't have as many questions. Many of the things you bring up, people could flip the question back at you pertaining to your questionable areas. It just seems like you are trying to so-to-speak "attempt to make people question" the team...while at the same time avoiding a non-biased approach of also questioning your own with it (ex: bringing up an injured player's (Sammy) lack of production in a bowl game....but not questioning Gurley's lack of production vs SCar....questioning people why they think the secondary will do good unproved and begging for "proof", while not taking the same consideration into a defense that lost 7 players and has many more questionable spots...saying one minute that the two quarterbacks are fairly equal in stats, yet later wanting to remove one of the aspects of one of them in a rushing discussion...while in other discussions, talking up all stats about your own). Just saying.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Clemson's defensive front seven

Aug 6, 2013, 12:32 PM

oh, and if you need stats, try this one..on NFL Draft Scout website, Beasley is rated as the #10 DE in the country:
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/players.php?genpos=DE&draftyear=2015&sortby=tsxpos&order=ASC

and straight from the site:

07/16/13 - 2013 BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: DE Vic Beasley, Clemson...Beasley led Clemson in sacks last year, even though he never started a game. The junior from Adairsville, GA had eight sacks for 55 negative yards last year in 13 games. He had eight quarterback pressures to go with it. He was in on 288 plays as a reserve, but is in line to be a starting defensive end for the Tigers this season.

so actually, you are flase in saying the sack leader went to the NFL...we still have him.

We had more sacks last year than GA and you lost Jarvis who created half of yours. Do you have a point?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Even we don't really know what to expect at DE.

Aug 6, 2013, 11:53 AM

It's been a while since we've had a dominant player at that position. We were fortunate for years, but hopefully someone steps up. It really hurt us the past couple seasons on defense.

Beasley has potential but he's still undersized.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

now that's not true...

Aug 6, 2013, 12:26 PM

A couple years ago we had Andre Branch, and before that we had Daquan Bowers. We've had a pretty dominant DE most years, with the exception of last year.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was my point. Look at our defense Pre-Bowers and

Aug 6, 2013, 1:04 PM

Aug 6, 2013, 1:15 PM

and Gaines Adams and Charles Bennett were pretty good on some of the same teams.

And Koenning did a pretty good job with his defenses without having a ton of talent on the edge for years before that.

Aug 6, 2013, 12:24 PM

You're not seeing that Beasley didn't play full time when getting those sacks, while Crawford was mostly being asked to cover the run. I believe we return a few sacks from our DTs, and I think at least one or two LBs have sacks.

I agree that nobody on Clemson's defense looks particularly scary, but Clemson fans are looking for Beasley to have a big season, while Crawford is a very talented DE that was pushed into a starting role before he was entirely ready last year.

Aug 6, 2013, 1:30 PM

From our perspective our Dline isn't a question mark because there is virtually no change from last year (Except goodman who's ONLY good game was vs. LSU).

So the way we see it, Our D was improving throughout the season last year. They now have a whole offseason under their belt, a year more experience in a relatively new system. That is = to improvement. In our minds, it is not a question mark because we know what to expect from an almost entirely the same unit.

In addition, our linebackers will be much improved this year. They may add a sack or two.
