the offense and DJ. In 2021 the offense was as bad as it ever was. The defense was still dominant and finished top 10 right? Ok. Fast forward a year. The offense isn’t great but much improved. See the WF game for example. However even with offensive improvement our defense fell off big time. Oh and btw we had ALL those dlineman and Simpson last year right? So how do you blame the offense for that? It’s coaching period. If you can’t see it I feel sorry for ya. Goodwin is a dud. The players don’t even trust his calls. See Philips interview. Because DJ was bad and now that he is gone he is just the scapegoat for every other problem we’ve had the last two years and it’s absolute BS.

It’s not going to happen. Kids are already way too soft these days as it is. Add in Wes Goodwin, who has absolutely no fire and you’re going to see a timid defense that lets things come to them instead of attacking the offense. Other than Xavier Thomas, we have no proven defensive ends. We’re having to rely on true freshman because all the other ones we recruited haven’t been developed at all or we misevaluated their talent….. we have two proven linebackers that can’t play the whole game. Wiggins and Jones on the outside at corner. Teams are going to run off tackle on us all season long. Our defensive backs are so small now look at all of them they don’t have any size any strength they can’t get off of blocks.

Lukas and Pride Jr are going to shine this year. I also think Avion Terrel is taking a starting spot by season's end.
I really think the freshmen and sophomore Clemson defenders are going to either elevate the upperclassmen or straight up replace them

I’m talking bulk. Like Andrew booth. Or the ability to get off blocks which only 25 has shown the ability to do. Mukuba is pretty solid coming up to help and was hurt last year but no way do Wiggins and Jones have the strength to help us on the perimeter.

Wrong. Other fans are bitching about the offense keeping the defense tired last year. I’m simply defending that the offense wasn’t the problem in that regard. It’s not even debatable. Go look at the numbers from 2021 compared to 2022 offensively and see how much we improved in every category and then come back and tell me that the defense sucked last year because we were tired…. well why wasn’t that case in 2021 when we had less talent than we had last year?

That's not really accurate. Last year's offense was not as good as you claim. If we look at 2016-2022 (excluding 2021), last year's offense was the worst in ppg, ypg, passing ypg, completion %, yyp, sacks, and turnovers.
To put it in perspective, the next worse team in each category was: 2017(ppg), 2017(ypg), 2017(passing ypg), 2019(completion %), 2017(ypp), 2017(sacks), 2016(turnovers).
Basically, in the last 7 years, 2021 offense was the worst, 2022 was 2nd worst, 2017 was 3rd 3rd worst. The two worst offenses were with DJ Uiagalelei, and the third worst was with Kelly Bryant.

Dude, you’re obviously not following this conversation. The whole argument is that last year‘s -O caused the defense to be tired so I’m comparing last year‘s O to the previous year so it doesn’t matter how good they were last year it’s just that they were much better from 2021 when the defense wasn’t tired.

I don't care what the "argument" is. I care about facts.
The 2021 defense returned 9 starters. The 2022 defense only returned 6. In particular, the 22 secondary only returned 1 starter in the secondary (Makuba).
So how did that manifest itself? The 22 defense allowed 232 passing ypg game, which was not good. However, the 22 defense only allowed 103 rushing ypg. In the last 7 years, only the 2018 and 2021 defenses were better (96 rushing ypg). For comparison, the 2016 defense, which won a national championship, gave up 130 rushing ypg. The difference? The 22 defense returned all 4 starters on the d-line.
So let's recap. The 22 defense returned all 4 d-line starters and was good against the run. They only returned 1 starter in the secondary and were not good against the pass. Plus, there were a lot of injuries to a secondary breaking in 3 new starters. I'd say we have our answer.

Simply put if the offense was worse in 2021 and the defense was top 10 then how did the offense improve over the year and the defense get worse? Our fans are claiming that last years O caused the D to fail. That’s just factually incorrect and total BS. Our fans speak in platitudes and say memorized lines. It’s just stupid period

I just answered that in the previous post. The 21 defense returned 9 of 11 starters. The 22 defense only returned 6 of ll starters, with the secondary only returning 1 of 4 starters.
The 22 defense was not helped by the fact that the 22 offense was worse than the 2017 offense, when Kelly Bryant was the quarterback.

I’m sure you’ve done a careful analysis but in our final three games wherein we went 1-2 we were 71st in the country in offensive time of possession. We were worse in the Notre Dame game. That and average field position are the two most important factors affecting the defense. And yes, the defense was better in 2021. An offense with half a pulse would have played for the national championship that year. Interesting that you acknowledge the offense improved (marginally) but somehow think the defense is in a death spiral? I’d love to see youre notes on the future outlook circa 2010.

“Season” averages are fun to look at, but do not tell much for our losses. What were our offensive statistics in the losses? Turnovers, completion rate, 3rd down conversions, passing:rushing yards, etc.

Somethings are a matter of opinion, but it is factually incorrect to say that last year‘s offense caused the defense to stay on the field and tire out, when that is simply not the case. It’s easy to say that because DJ Ian’s streeter are both gone so they’re no longer Clemson Tigers so we can just bash them but oh my goodness let’s not say one word about Wes Goodwin because he still a Clemson coach, even though hes not any good and he has no fire. The dude doesn’t even look like he would slap his wife on the ### from behind.

May or may not be the biggest factor but when you play tight trying to do too much because the other side is struggling, it affects the performance.
Injuries to secondary and corresponding youth can’t be overstated. Everyone points to Wake and we were playing freshmen in the back.
Bresee was underwhelming all year (gets a pass) and Murphy was hit or miss.
It’s also fair to say that FSU(road), Wake(road), NCSt, ND(road), SC, UNC(neutral), and TN(neutral) were all better offensively vs 2021 opponents (sans Pitt).
That all said, I think Wes underperformed as well but he was basically a freshman too.
We’ll see what happens this year but our D line should be as good if XT stays healthy and the next two levels will be better in addition to coaching.
Top 10 D should be the expectation imo

freshman season as a coach and so was Danny Ford. Things can and have worked out in the past here for newby coaches. One of the biggest issues is we're trying to compare his results against the results of the best Defensive Coordinator in the country in Brent Venables. We were spoiled. Anyone who came after Brent was going to be a downgrade. Its just factual.
I agree though that this year is really important to his future. You can't have a subpar year this year. You've had a chance to get your feet under you and now its about results of your coaching. WE shall see.

The D had a lot of injuries last year in the secondary and on the line. And don't forget, the offense and special teams gave up a few scores last year. I would like to give Wes some time before we call him a dud. Venables first two years here we gave up 24.8 and 22.2 ppg. The reason we were good was because of our explosive offense, something we have not had the last two years.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Goodwin didn't cause Breesee's tragic circumstances with his sister. Goodwin didn't cause Breesee's infection and lost time. Goodwin had to play Simpson out of position. Goodwin didn't cause Makuba's shoulder injury. Your post is absolute BS ...... not Goodwin's coaching.

No, your post is absolute BS because they switched Simpson and Carter at the end of the year and they played much better so no, they decided to move Trenton Simpson in the off-season to a different position and it didn’t work out. It wasn’t because they had to it was because they chose to. They should’ve left Simpson where he was, and left carter where he was instead of switching both of their natural positions. Once again I’m right
