I was on the phone with former Clemson punter Dawson Zimmerman just now, and we were reminiscing about how the specialists used to play "golf" with footballs on the practice field.
Keep in mind, these were the days before all the fancy facilities. Players dressed across the parking lot in Jervey, and there was no indoor facility. The "hole" was in a corner of the endzone near where the cemetery for away games lies, and I can remember watching the specialists try to hit that slope just right.
He started laughing and then said that during bowl practice one time, the weather was severely cold. And so Jimmy Maners and a few of the guys smuggled fire making supplies out onto the practice field. And once their session was over, they snuck over behind the equipment shed and pulled out the kindling, wood, and a lighter and built a fire so they could stay warm.
What they didn't count on was the smoke, and pretty soon Larry Greenlee and maybe Joey Batson came over to see what was on fire. He said they turned the corner and saw all of the specialists huddled around a fire and just lost it laughing.
I wish I had a pic of a bunch of Clemson players huddled around a practice field fire.
