Clemson ROTC?
Jul 9, 2012, 3:30 PM

How many of you military level supporters on here took ROTC at Clemson.
My uncle did and graduated from Clemson in the Mid-70's and went on to retire as a CWO after a long career in the ARMY. He was stationed in Alabama, Germany (many times), and Korea among other places...
Just wondering.

The reason I posted this was I always heard good things about Clemson's ROTC program when I was at the Citadel.

Graduated in '73 and was commissioned same day.
27 year career as an AF pilot.
Retiring from an AF civil service position in August.
When I entered Clemson in 1969 ROTC was still mandatory for male students for your freshman and sophomore years. If your predicted first semester GPA was 1.9 or higher, you could choose between AF or Army ROTC. Below 1.9 predicted GPA, you had to take ARMY ROTC.

it the C-141 Starlifter or something like that? We used those on our second or third jumps - used the old WWII Flying Boxcars for the first one or two jumps (was glad to jump from those so we wouldn't have to be on them when they landed because of the shape they were in - was told they were being given to some South American country shortly after that time).

Never went or intended to go to Clemson but did drop out of college to join the military. Now I'm going back to school and letting the military pay for my education

I only took the 2 years mandatory ROTC (Air Force) and was not really military oriented at the time... but that was when the draft was still in effect. So, I got my ticket to Viet Nam via that route. Infantry, no less!

Army ROTC - 86-90
Jul 9, 2012, 4:16 PM

I was in Army ROTC from 86 to 90. If you get a scholarship it isn't a bad really - tuition and a monthly "stipend". Of course you incur an obligation but chances are if you are looking at that option the obligation isn't that big an issue. I did ROTC without the benefit of the scholarship.
It was a good program but I don't have a whole lot to compare it too so I can't say much. I know we were competetive at summer camp and sent folks through airborne/ranger school.
As I understand it the number of ROTC cadets have been steadily shrinking. Can't imagine them ending the program given the military hertiage (and not saying there is a danger of that).

the same time I was at the Citadel.
I remember TONS of military cutbacks during that time. The transition from Reagan's military expansion and Bush's reductions...
Thanks for serving!

I took ROTC, and was on the Pershing Rifles drill team my Freshman year.
I never served in the military though, thanks to Nixon stopping the draft while I was in school.

I went to Clemson in 1959 and took four years of Army ROTC. I graduated and was commissioned on the same day. As CO of the 85th EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Detachment, we were the 2nd Army team to go to Vietnam in 1965. I retired with 28 years active and reserve time. Those Clemson years were great.
