To whomever said it, it makes no sense for you to say we haven’t “played” like a top 10 defense. It makes no objective sense whatsoever. You’re simply trying to promote an unfounded opinion, and your opinion is incorrect.. based on rank and SOS.
Some of you dudes try way too hard to complain.

this year. No doubt. We play all the currently ranked teams in the ACC except Louisville, plus ND.
I only wish we could have some of the those easier games first and given the Offense more time to grow up.
Barring injury, we're gonna be a really tough out for anyone the rest of the season. Kudos to Riley and the coaching staff for growing up the guys in just a short month. Wes Goodwin is getting better and better too.

I tend to agree with alot of the sentiments on this board concerning the offense side of the ball and coaching, however i never understood the anger at wes goodwin from the get go, the guy is a pretty decent coach, DJ and the offense were making it real hard on him also making him bail them out time after time. People have also forgotten (and i know this is blasphemy) Venables had slipped a little in big games shredded by Ohio State and LSU.....that wasn't Wes.
Also in retrospect turns out Brock Purdy is a pretty good qb, maybe you forgot we only beat Iowa State in the cheeze it bowl because of defense, and Goodwin was coaching on short notice vs Brock Purdy.

No doubt, Purdy just went 20/21 passing in the NFL. The only other QB I recall having a game like that was Brady. Very good company.
Goodwin will be a great one, just have to give him a little grace while he grows into his role.

It is a strange year, for sure. Part of the reason we look so good on paper is because the defense played on short fields because of turnovers in the first two games.
But the last two games, with the exception of a few plays here and there, have been very, very good.

Part of the reason we aren't ranked in the top 5 is because we played on short fields. The average points per game we give up would drop dramatically without the boneheaded mistakes by the offense.
This unit will only continue to improve. Especially when Wiggins returns.

This defense is legit and the offense is rounding into form.

We are playing well as a unit but it is also true that a D line that has been hyped as much as ours ( I'm guilty myself ) should be ranked higher than 104 in the nation in sacks. Both things can be true at the same time.
And it doesn't mean you're somehow less of a fan for pointing it out.

That throws a wrench in your “both things can be true” approach.
Btw, we’re ranked way higher than Alabama and Georgia.

Thanks , that makes sense. The only point I was trying to convey is that until this past Saturday our D line has been disappointing. I just find it interesting that after all the hand wringing about DE Parker has quieted that down but with most of America believing we have the best front four in the country we can't get to the QB

game plan, marching orders, you don't know purpose, expectations, the how and why the DL designated play fits into what the staff has cooked up for the next game's O.
There are guesses to be made of course. The queer[in an odd sort of way] front for me so far, was the reliance on so much 3 man early and the choice to play with more skill?
I'd really liked to have been able to sit in when the staff was working through that choice.

Very true. We've also gone against two athletic QBs that are good at escaping the pocket. The sacks will come as we play less mobile QBs.
