Clemson culture - A different take

This may cause heads to explode.
During the basketball game yesterday they showed a graphic that only 8 players from the entire 18 team ACC will complete their eligibility at the same school they started out at as a freshman on scholarship. 2 of those are Chase Hunter and Ian Schieffelin.
I believe this speaks to the culture at Clemson. Not Brownell’s culture, not Dabo’s culture, but the culture at Clemson that has existed there since way before we know either of these 2 coaches. We talked about there being something in them hills when I was a student in the 1980s. Anyone who has spent significant time there knows what we mean. The coaches help for sure, but athletes and students choose Clemson and choose to stay at Clemson because of the school, the location, the people and everything else that makes the Clemson experience special. This is why you see a higher percentage of athletes staying at Clemson for their entire college career than most other schools.

And it was that way back in 1959 when I arrived to be a military RAT Cap wearing freshman and I sensed then not only the military esprit-de-corps but also the Love for the school, students, campus, faculty, town & merchants as well as unreal support not only for the football team but for basketball, tennis, track, wrestling, etc.
YES, Clemson is an unreal special place that immediately fills one’s heart with feelings of home..Forever!
Go TiGERS!

I remember in the late 90s coming to a football game and Gary Barnes telling me that there was a period in late 80s early 90s where the Clemson Family seemed to be disappearing, but he could see it coming back they way it was when we were in school. My wife, a Memphis girl, noticed the Clemson Family being different than the other places she had been to as well. We are looking to "retire again" and Clemson is one of the places she wants to consider.

I highly recommend it. After graduation we moved 8 times in the next 20 years and none of those places were close to Clemson at all. I am a native South Carolinian (Johns Island) and we got the opportunity to move to Asheville in 2013 where we lived for 6 years. We were able to attend games and visit Clemson regularly for the first time in almost 30 years. We decided to move to the Clemson area (Easley) in 2019 and I got a job on campus that was what I considered semi-retirement. At the end of 2022 I retired fully and absolutely love being retired here. You won’t regret it.

I somewhat agree although I believe Dabo and CBB have an outsized impact on player retention

I’m probably just be out of my mind crazy, but Clemson to me has always felt like more than just a town or a dot on the map. I have lived in places that I love(d) but Clemson’s always felt different and I could never pinpoint it. The best way I can describe it is that it’s a living and breathing entity. To me Clemson feels like more than just a name or town. It’s a whole being and place that welcomes you back home much like a loving friend would welcome you into their home… no matter how many months or years you’ve been gone. Clemson is Clemson and I always feel like I’m “home” when I’m back.

I did not graduate from nor attend Clemson (my older brother did). But have been a fan since age 12. This post brought years to my eyes. Thank you.

No doubt. Every trip is homecoming. It’s the spirit of Clemson that permeates everything. The people. The places. The food. The beverages. It’s just different and special.

well since I was a toddler in the mid 60s. I can't think of a better place I'd rather live. I grew up in Central and have lived in Simpsonville for 31 years. I'd love to move back to the Clemson/Central area when I retire in three years.
On a side note, Simpsonville and Clemson have both grown a lot in the past 30 years. They've both lost a lot of that small town feel. Simpsonville has had a big time Yankee and foreigner invasion which has driven up property values and taxes which is great if you buy and sell but not if you just want to live where you did much cheaper years ago.

I think that invasion has happened statewide. My family is on Johns Island and it is bad there and all along the coast.

I agree 100%. I am a 1979 grad, and I still get chills when I am at a Clemson sporting event and they play our alma mater, and I get to raise my hand toward the sky proudly showing my Clemson ring!! I missed a lot of Clemson life because I commuted from Anderson for most of my time at Clemson. I lived off campus my senior year. But I never missed a football or a basketball game!! Go Tigers!!
