It seems we never have enough quality pitching. I went to Omaha in early 1990s. I spoke briefly to Coach Wilhelm on Day 1. We were to play our first game on Day 2. When asked how he viewed our prospects he replied that he didn't have enough pitching. He was right. Tigers had 2nd seed and we went 0-2 and out. FSU was # 1 seed and they went 0-2. I don't recall if FSU was already in ACC or not.
Our present-day Tiger baseball team is fun to watch when they play well, but not so much when they lose because of poor execution. To overthrow the cut-off man twice can, and did, lead to one hitter taking an extra base. Poor fundamental. Quality and depth of pitching is questionable. Inability to lay down a successful sacrifice bunt has been a weakness even back in the Leggett era. Against a quality opponent it frequently are the little things that likely will affect the outcome.
Traditionally, Clemson baseball has been on the threshold of greatness. Twelve trips to Omaha exceeds most NCAA D1 programs. However, we've never won the CWS nor have we ever been in the championship game. We've had two NCAA Players of the Year. Some year in the future Clemson will win the CWS, but overall quality and performance must improve to get there. As a Clemson alumnus from many years ago it is a fervent hope that we can win a CWS in my lifetime.
