Aug 21, 2023, 10:11 PM

Went 9-4 last yr
All 4 losses were less then 1 score
17 returning starters
And the last yr ACC coach of the year

On the other hand
They didnt play 1 ranked team in 2022
Last yr was the 7th winning season since 1922

Tigers by 3 scores 38-17

Only thing that concerns me...

Our first game with a New OC.

While they'll be in year 2 with OC and DC, and a lot of Momentum. Not exactly the best game to start with.

Usually, early season games are more dominated by the defense. Let's hope our Defense is as good as we all hope them to be, and our Offense, finds the endzone a few times.

You would be more comfortable with last year's OC?

For the first game, maybe, but I'm looking long term too...

Aug 22, 2023, 12:34 PM

But none of that's the point.

You can have the nations best OC, but there is always a learning curve for the players with a new playbook, new language/verbiage and play calling.

Chad Morris took us to new heights, but those first 2 games under him were ugly. It wasn't until the middle of the 2nd quarter vs Auburn (3rd game) before the lights started to come on for everyone and everything started to click.

A home game vs UNC Charlotte would have been much preferred.

While I wouldn't argue that an easy warm up game at home wouldn't be better. I will say this whole Summer we've heard how less complicated the offense is now. If I remember correctly Morris' was complicated, especially back then when it was new.

I'm hopeful that's the case.

I just know that Duke is going to be a tough out given:

- It's out first game with a new OC. *
- They went 9-4 in year one under Elko.
- Year 2 is always easier and you generally see another jump in improvement with those teams
- They are returning the most starters in the ACC (17) in 2023.
- The offense (82%) leads the conference in returning production.

* I am optimistic though, b/c it does sound like the players on Offense have stepped up to the challenge (learning new system, QB's & WR's working on routes and timing all summer. I also know this is Garrett's first rodeo either so I'm not worried about his play calling.

I'm hoping the Defense is stifling from the gun and holds them to less than 16 points.

Strange that Clemson hasn't played there since 2012.

We’ll be just fine & romp..

and it’ll be next uP. It’s all a build-up for excitement but experts know Devils aren’t gonna be spoiler devils, by a long shot..

Go Tigers!

If the conference has done anything right the last few years

Aug 22, 2023, 7:16 PM [ in reply to Re: Duke ]

it was going to the new scheduling model (3-5-5).

As a player, you'll get to play every team in the conference and visit every stadium (baring injury, or leaving early).

As fans, we get get to travel to more destinations in a faster time frame and see more teams at home, more frequently.

Bonus: They picked the best 3 schools for us too (FSU, GT and Nancy State).

You might want to check "Last yr was the 7th winning season since 1922". That's way off. They have had 7 since 1989.

Mike Elko is a really good coach

Aug 22, 2023, 10:10 AM

I expect his defense to give us a few problems. They're clearly less talented, but i just don't think we have the elite skill players to dominate them athletically. Without a huge talent advantage out there i think Elko's excellent defensive coaching comes into play a lot more than it would if we had some dudes like Higgins, Williams, Etienne, etc out there. No amount of great coaching can overcome that type of gap in talent in athleticism. But i just don't think that's there right now, at least not in game 1.

I still think we will win, possibly comfortably by the end, but i also think it will be a good test for Riley's offense.

I think what helps is it's the opener. This would be one of my trap games for Clemson if this had been scheduled later in the year.

We'll be amped for the opener so I imagine the players are going to be juiced rolling in. Hope the WRs prove you wrong and the O shows out but, like you, I'm in wait and see mode.

Duke MAY be a sleeper

Aug 22, 2023, 10:12 AM

However, I think Clemson takes care of business by the 2nd half.

If anything, I'm happy we get the opener with them because they would have trap game potential all over them.

Every game is a trap game for Clemson according to most media outlets.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At the end of the day, its Duke. The talent gap is massive

Aug 22, 2023, 1:16 PM

So, unless you think Duke just has a vastly superior coaching staff to Clemson, then you shouldnt be terribly concerned here.

We should be able to tell them “we are running the ball on every play” and still win. Athlete to Athlete, they shouldn’t be able to match up.

waterboy in the 4th behind center Duke might score 10 more points toward the end of the game. Clemson is almost always ready to give up an early TD so I could see Duke scoring 17 under those circumstances.
