Clem's most dominant Defensive FB player the last 10 yrs

Jul 4, 2017, 10:04 AM

1. Grady Jarrett
2. Daquan Bowers
3. Vic Beasley
4. Shaq Lawson
5. Mackensie Alexander

This is my top 5 in order. It would have been between Bowers and Beasley if you just went by stats, but IMO if you have a true appreciation for every position on the field, it is hard to ignore how much Grady controlled and dominated the middle of line his last 2 yrs. Teams couldn't run up the middle on us when he was in there, they got absolutely nothing in short yardage, and he consistently gave us great push up the middle in pass rush situations. He simple wrecked havoc in the middle and he was the biggest reason (even more so than Beasley) as to why we had the #1 Defensive in the nation his Senior season.

I don't expect many others to agree, but I gave him the edge by nose over Bowers.

I would put Mackensie #1.

Also would already put big Dex and Wilkins in the top 5. They are going to be dominant 3 yrs for us and Beasley and Shaq were really 1 yr studs.

1. Mac
2. Wilkins
3. Bowers
4. Steph Anthony
5. Big Dex (will be number 1 in 2 yrs)

Wrong about Beasley

Jul 4, 2017, 11:51 AM

8 sacks as a sophomore playing as a situational guy, 13 sacks as a junior and 9 as a senior. 2 time all american.

Beasley was a big factor for 3 seasons

Grady never took any plays off. Bowers...

Bowers lead the nation as a Junior in sacks and TFLs

Jul 4, 2017, 1:36 PM

You can question his motor, but that is dominant.

Dominant includes more than just physical dominance. IMO, Ben Boulware lead the defense from very good to dominant for the past two years. For that reason, I have him as #1. The proof is in the pudding and although he wasn't the most physically dominant football player on the defense, he was the best "football player" on the defense during the national championship year. There's a reason Jeff Davis' name is on the stadium and it isn't because he's the greatest linebacker to play at Clemson (because he wasn't) ... he was, however, a dynamic leader and lead his team (also) to the national championship .... this is worth far more than more tackles and sacks.

1. Ben Boulware
2. Shaq
3. Wilkins
4. Grady
5. Ferrell (1 year but dominant nonetheless ... especially on the big stage)

Ferrell over Beasley?

Cmon man

Beasley was quicker off the edge but not close to the lamp post that Ferrell is setting the edge. This kid's going to be one of the very best ever at CU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right...

Jul 6, 2017, 6:48 PM

But let's let Ferrell get there first, before you anoint him prematurely

Ferrell had a good year and really turned it up in the playoffs, but Beasley was a 2-time All American and top 10 pick. Hard to put CF ahead of Vic based off of what they have done to date

Boulware had the heart and soul, strength, IQ, and run stopping abilities to put him in the top 5, but his pass defense skills were just bad. Everybody has an Achilles I guess.

Love Ben to death, but he was a liability in pass protection***

Bowers had one good year and constantly took plays off (and couldn't defend an option). He would not be in the top 5. Also boulware is one one of my favorites and was a great leader, but was pretty one dimensional and couldn't help much in passing situations. Beasley was awesome at what he did and was a freak athlete, but good teams could gameplan around him and wasn't great against the run.

I would go with Alexander or maybe Wilkins for his versatility.

Wrong wrong just wrong

Not sure but I do know that in a year one guy will get bumped for Wilkins

Jul 4, 2017, 12:44 PM

and in 2 years another will get bumped for Lawrence.

Deandre Mcdaniel was a beast in 09 but I don't know if he had the total body of work to make a top 5. 09 though... 99 tackles, 6.5 tfl, 8 INTs.

In 4 years he had 275 tackles, 20 tfl, and 15 ints. And ofc the legendary shaming of Christian ponder.

Argue about 2-5 if necessary, but I agree Grady Jarrett

Jul 4, 2017, 1:40 PM

has been the most "dominant" defensive player of the last few seasons.....Not at all surprised he's beginning to make his mark in the NFL

The most dominant def was mak. What he did at Clemson was astounding. Not even from a number stand point. He didn't have alot of tackles and no int's. He took one side of the field away the whole game. Only gave up 1 td in 27 games and it was on a slip.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Grady is the best pure NT I ever saw with a Paw on

Jul 5, 2017, 7:19 PM [ in reply to Argue about 2-5 if necessary, but I agree Grady Jarrett ]

Fridge has him physically but not speed wise. Give me Grady and Wilkins on the inside, Jeff Bryant and Vic on the outside all time team. Big Dex may make us rewrite that soon.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In 2 years, Wilkens play and leadership have easily landed him in any top 5.***

Agree with previous post - big Dex will be #1 on that list very soon.

Mac and Beasley

Jul 5, 2017, 11:41 AM

wrecked opposing coach's game plans for multiple years. They easily go 1 or 2 in any order for me on this list

Jarrett and Alexander should be in the top 5, probably my personal top 2, the other 3 can be debated between about a dozen different guys.

I have to throw Gaines Adams' name in the hat as he literally won the 'lost' game against Wake Forest. Wake fans might agree. :)

RIP Mr. Adams.
