Move-in day memories.

Good friends are moving their oldest in down at Auburn today, so I texted them some encouragement as it's probably a one heck of a roller coaster day for parents (our one and only still has a couple of years in HS to go).

It got me thankin' about my move-in day way back when.

Times were sure different: My parents didn't come with me, but they did roll through campus on their way to the family lake house. Because, priorities.

They found my truck and slid a fiver under my windshield wiper with a note: "Go get a burger with your new buddies."

I rolled on campus with a laundry basket filled with folded clothes, a box of detergent for the semester (one load per week on Sundays), one of those little mini microwaves, a VHS-combo TV set, and a backpack.

No fanfare. No dern social media splash; one day I was a kid living at home, the next I was a kid living in a dorm.

Them were the days.

That must have been in the Annex or A section. In the F-4 Hall, we were lucky

to have blinds on the windows, steel frame bunk beds, asbestos tile flooring, dented doors and walls, everything was painted white, even the gun racks.

My parents helped move me in...a foot locker, clothes and a few boxes. We ate lunch at the Sizzler and they left this country boy in the infamous Johnstone, with Led Zepplin playing down the hall, my neighbor played Lacross and bounced that fricken ball 24/7. Community showers were something you had to get used to. We did get curtains in the bathroom toilets after a week.

My roommate was a senior and volunteer fireman, I saw him rarely. Luckily, I was adopted into Tigerband and PSA so I had lots of friends.

Man that pic strikes a chord.

My room was like a closet with closets and a bunk bed and two desks and it smelled like skunk all semester because someone had stink bombed the place during the summer school session.

My roomie was from Brownsville and would stretch the phone chord as far down the hall as he could get from our room and talk to his Momma in Spanish just about every night.

I got so drunk at a sorority dance that I used my trash can for a receptacle because the bathrooms were 50 yards away.

I knocked that putrefaction over in the night, and awoke the next morning to my Dad at the door wanting to take me to breakfast, and my room smelling like distilled bile.

The one time in my college career my old man shows up to do something thoughtful, and me too drunk to take him up on the offer.

We laughed about it later in life, but it was a bit awkward at the time.

These kids now it seems have dorm rooms like resort hotel suites. No wonder we can't afford college anymore.

Our one and only child wants to go to Clemson and I can only hope the Lord provides a way.

One of the things I remember most is the loads of lumber laying in the Johnstone hallway as people were building-up their beds.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

We liberal arts folks would've just been sleeping on the floor all semester.

I was so anxious before move-in my freshman year that I puked up my breakfast. After that it was smooth sailing, my random roomies became like brothers to me. Johnstone Annex I might add.

There's something in these hills.

My parents didn't come with me either. I had only enough clothes to fill

one shelf in Johnstone + a small B/W TV that I got for HS graduation.

I had several friends starting at Clemson, but we all agreed to NOT be roommates, so we could meet someone new. That worked out well for most of us - as we made new lifelong friends.

I remember the lumber in the hallway - but I didn't realize that was a thing, so my new roommate and I didn't get our beds "lifted" for a couple of weeks.

For some reason, it hit me (not in a sad way) that I was now on-my-own when I first checked for mail in the post office beside Johnstone.

Ah memories...this yankee from nj got dropped off by parents with clothes and a stereo in a foreign land that I learned to love. Got moved into overflow "housing" - a utility closet in Lever. My home for a few months with a roomie from Anderson that spent more time at home than in the utility closet (go figure). Hey at least it was easy to clean beer from the tile floor and walls, and I had my very own electric drinking fountain. Good times - wouldn't trade it for anything

First time I ever saw Clemson

Back then there was no visiting campuses, etc and no internet.

My move in day was 4 years earlier, with my family, into our new house in Easley. 😁😁
