Or how about Marines, Army, Coast Guard t-shirts. Or how about a Border Patrol shirt, which last I knew the Border Patrol fell under Coast Guard. ICE fell under another branch but that could have changed recently.
That said, multiple staff (at least 2) have been fired or put on leave from Florence District for wearing a Border Patrol T-shirts.
This new country of USO (United States of Offended) can not continue. People think they can just cancel anything they don't like. I guess Cancel Culture has a true meaning .

Statement: ""It is with regret that we acknowledge that a picture that was posted on our Facebook page yesterday showed an insensitive disregard for the current challenges our Hispanic population faces."
Seriously? Wearing Border Patrol t-shirts. Who should this offend? Any persons with legal visa or citizenship would never be cringed by a T-shirt representing America. If it does, then get the H3LL out and don't let the waves spank your rear!

If they aren't, or weren't in the BP, then its kind of a d i ck move.
Akin to visiting a Clemson game wearing a coot shirt, when they aren't playing us.

Ummmmmmm......no. there is very little correlation between a game, with all the fun that goes with in-state rivalry, and the debacle at the border. I agree that it's asking for trouble, but there is a huge disparity between the backstory of said scenarios. One is fun and games, because we spank the coots most years, and an in issue that could very easily help to bankrupt an entire country

in a country and culture that consistently craps on law and order, including regarding immigration law enforcement, it's just fine. Just peachy, even noble.
Besides, what about all those pretentious white people schilling for BLM, or Ukraine, or lgbt, whatever. You think all of them are black or Ukranian, or trans? And yet they are considered noble in their virtue signaling.

True in the private workplace. Public school teachers have contracts that conform to the SC Teacher Employment and Dismissal Act that gives them a grievance process and more job rights than the rest of us. The employees fired for wearing the shirts may not be teachers so no grievance process. Bad choice of attire for Hispanic heritage "celebration" though. Even having such a controversial event just invites trouble. Good thing it was confined to one school.

The tragedy at Kent State was perpetrated by "students" that did not follow orders to disperse. When faced with military personnel with loaded weapons are telling you to halt and disperse, the best thing to do is halt and disperse, not advance.

Wearing a border patrol t-shirt at a celebration of hispanic americans is objectively racially insensitive.
It clearly hits a stereotype that hispanic americans illegally crossed the border.

You serious Clark? I don't see how anyone gets fired for exercising their free speech rights. Ok, maybe they get fired, but they then have a lucrative potential lawsuit available to them. Do any of the illegal aliens at the school speak Spanish while on campus? If Americans wanted to get back at the school, then US citizens there should claim offense at this as it is 'exclusionary and racially insensitive' behavior and should be banned. Woke idiots...

My daughter did her student teaching at a Title I school, and a Border Patrol shirt would have terrified about a third of the kids in that school. Firing seems extreme, but the teachers definitely should have been disciplined - along with the dummy who decided it was a good idea to post their picture on FB.

While I agree that the tshirts, given the current state of "affairs" in school leadership, was asking for trouble, the question is "who was being offended?" Those that have a right to be called citizens, or those who aren't?
We need to get our priorities straight. We need to kick the "woke" politicians out of our govt. It has to start from the bottom up, school leadership being the starting point

Sadly in this world today nothing surprises me. But firing for wearing those shirts is ludicrous. If an issue speak to the staff. How is it ok to hand out / wear gender pride propaganda but not this? “Ok for me but not for thee” needs to end.

meaning that employers can fire employees at any time, with or without a legal reason.
However, thinks like race, sex, age, disability, genetic information, or nation of origin are exceptions to the rule. It is also illegal to fire someone for retaliating against them for reporting illegal or unsafe workplace practices, or for refusing to participate in illegal activities.

True for most. However, teachers have contracts that provide more protections than the rest of us as well as a grievance process. The fired folks may not have been teachers but "classified' employees and thus, terminated.

Since they wore them at a school event, I would say that wearing that border patrol shirt is definitely insensitive, but certainly does not rise to the level of being fired. Hopefully they hire a good lawyer and get reinstated with backpay and punitive awards.

or corporations. Many school district employees are require to sign and comply with a strict code of conduct and that includes things that may occur outside of normal school hours and posts on social media platforms (past, present or future).
In this particular instance, I don't think the kids were back at school yet (thankfully). However, someone posted pics on the school's website or Facebook page. Had the incident not been disclosed publicly, the Superintendent may have handled it differently.

Oh no Mr. Bill. I think a B. P. t-shirt is not profane and would fall under this ruling if push comes to shove. I don't know all the circumstances but I wear pretty controversial t-shirts often and know I'm protected by the 1st Amendment.
The U.S. Supreme Court said in 1971 that clothing with offensive or profane speech is protected by the First Amendment. It overturned the conviction of Paul Robert Cohen, who wore a jacket with the words “(Expletive) the Draft” (the expletive was spelled out) into a California courthouse.

Who is supposed to be offended by this? You think Asians that came to US legally, you think Cubans that came legally or Cubans that took an illegal boat ride? Ok so its sensitive to Hispanics, Why? If they came legally why woukd they be offended?
My buddy owns a sizeable farm in SC, one of the largest of his type in Southeast, and he uses the legal method of hiring Hispanic immigrants, where he has to supply housing, transportation, medical, pay taxes on their income but with their work Visa they are required to go back to their home country for 1month every year. He is allowed 5 immigrants per every # of acres farmed. So these Hispanic immigrants are great workers, very dedicated to their job as their housing and work environment is better than they ever had.
These migrant workers do not want illegals crossing the border because they could easily challenge for their job, do it cheaper especially being illegal and not in the Govt work program. These workers applaud the Border Patrol and want secure borders to protect their future employment.
Plus just think how much my buddy would save if he didn't have to supply housing, medical, transportation, etc, to immigrants and just used illegals.
The only people offended are offended due to convenience of protesting something while the others offended would likely be illegals. When did it become offensive to be Pro-America? It's time Patriotism is expressed and not admonished!

You are correct, after 9/11 in 2003 The Dept of Homeland Security was born and it took over Border Patrol. Early 2000's, I was working at the Coast Guard Facility in Charleston as a contractor and they were using it to train Border Patrol recruits. I had only graduated from Clemson few yrs before and both Coast Guard and Border Patrol were trying to recruit me. I guess I made an assumption that BP was an extension of CG. I have thought that for yrs but knew Homeland Security was governing body currently hence me saying that probably changed.
Thanks for correcting me. Doesn't change my admiration for BP and would hope anyone coukd wear a BP Tshirt just like a Marines or Army Tshirt without any recourse.

Yeah, I don’t think they should be fired, but we also don’t know the whole story. Maybe the ones that were fired have done this sort of thing before…who knows. If they’ve never done something like this before, they deserve a second chance.
A couple of other things in response to many of the comments in this thread…these clearly are not official U.S. Border Patrol t-shirts…some Karen made them on her sister’s vinyl machine (and a #### poor job at that). They just made a couple of shirts cause they thought it would be funny to show up for the Hispanic Heritage Celebration wearing them. So, for those talking about the shirts as if they are some sort of sacred adornment…they’re not…and it was never the intent of those wearing the shirts to honor the brave men and women of the USBP…so spare me the comments about patriotism and free speech…they really miss the mark here. IF it turns out these are actually official USBP shirts…they need to change their designer/supplier.
As for the funny part…there’s always a time and a place…but how freakin’ brain dead do you have to be to wear one of these to a Hispanic Heritage Celebration…and then to post the photos to your school FB page? I don’t care what your views on the border are…just really ####### stupid.
Lastly, the most important part in all of this…a child is a child is a child, and they don’t control their circumstances. I don’t care if they are legal, illegal, migrant, pink, purple, or whatever…the school and the teachers in that school are there to teach, encourage, support, and advocate for all of the kids in that school. That means that no matter your opinion on things, you always put the child first…and you don’t do crap like this that undermines the trust that kids and their parents place in you.

You absolutely nailed it. Regardless of whether someone thinks it's the funniest thing every or deeply offensive, it's just not necessary to wear it, and it is in poor taste in a school setting to 1. wear it and 2. post it.
