Change or die

Dec 10, 2022, 7:15 AM

I just read a really interesting article about the changes in football on Yahoo that came from Fighting Irish Wire and it says schools that don't embrace the Portal will die. It is hard to argue against that point because kids can now leave any time they want to..

Rules will change. Amendments will be made. matter of time.

If it came from a ND site it must be true!

Not necessarily. If a team can utilize a model that corners the market on signing top-rated high school recruits each year, the coach can get young players on campus, work them to evaluate further and put the best players on the field. Players who aren't quite as good or busts can either continue working to improve or enter the transfer portal to settle for another school that's not quite as competitive, which will free up spots for other top-rated high school recruits to sign the following year.

Elite teams use everything at their disposal to get better. ALA is top 5 nearly every year in recruiting but they are still active in the portal and so are schools like Ohio State, OK, USC, etc.

And Bammer missed the playoff this year, too. What’s your point?

Difference is… we had a QB on the bench who would’ve taken us there.

Bammer just simply wasn’t good enough.

My "point" was answering the poster above my comment on how teams can just do it through good recruiting. Alabama recruits well every year and still is active in the portal. They try and take advantage of all of their opportunities and don't limit themselves to just their own good recruiting.

Had we played Alabama's schedule, I'm not sure we would have been "good enough" either...

The portal has not made Alabama

Dec 10, 2022, 4:53 PM [ in reply to Re: Change or die ]

or Ohio State playoff teams. How many of their starters are transfer players, and what have they done?

Alabama has two losses.

UGA has zero starters, and they're the best team in the country.

USC hit the portal because they had to. What have they done?

OK is 6-6.

The portal is not some sort of magic sauce.

I don't think you build a team off the portal but you fill in a few key gaps as MI did by picking up the UVA center who just won the Rimington award for the nation's best center. Jake Bobo at UCLA was a Duke transfer who had a great year for them at TE. Of course, USC had their QB and WR from OK and Pitt which made a big difference.

Again, it is not a savior for a program but it can complement your regular recruiting when you have gaps to fill that don't come from recruiting alone.

Not sure why it's taking some 3-4 years to see this..?...

Dec 10, 2022, 10:48 AM

been saying it since 2019.......and that's PART of the reason we've seen drop off with the Clemson program from "ELITE"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson is about to finish ranked in the top 5 in the country.***

You don’t seem to understand the meaning of elite. 11-2, conference champs and ranked #7 is absolutely elite.

Agree with the point ...

Dec 10, 2022, 10:55 AM

The other 2000 lb gorilla (edit) is uSC, all SEC and B1G universities will be earning more than $100 million in TV contracts in a few years, and the Big 12 schools will also out-earn the ACC schools. Clemson will be competing with half the income of competitors which will greatly impact player and coach retention.

This sheds some light on what our competitors are currently doing.

200 lbs is actually not that big for a gorilla.

I don't think we have needed the portal. I don't think it's an issue for the top programs, but maybe here and there, every blue moon, it would help out.
