I live in Alaska now and I love everything about the sport. Side note: I might be WCCP’s northernmost listener!
If you fly fish, what is your favorite way to partake (single hand traditional, euro nymphing, spey, et cetera)? Or maybe you haven’t tried it, but you want to.
Anyway, I totally geek out about the sport and I’d love to hear your stories.

May I ask what is so interesting about it and what you enjoy more about it than other methods?

Rainbows are territorial so you stock your stream and they will stay close by.
You stock it well you can catch tons of fish.

I began fly fishing about 60 years ago so I have some interest in it! Nothing beats wading the Blue Ridge mountain streams on a beautiful day. Don’t go as often as I should but it’s a tough sport when you become an octogenarian! Good Luck.
Learn to tie your own flys.

At the end of the day, it is just more fun than conventional methods in my humble opinion. There is a lot of strategy that goes into it. There is a lot of trial and error. You are constantly learning about new fly patterns and nuances of each target species. Fly anglers are also very much into conservation.

Check out the Joan Wolff casting videos as well, she’s a great teacher. I have commercial fished, spear fished, and used conventional tackle, got into fly fishing a few years ago and haven’t looked back. Target warm freshwater species in farm ponds mostly, starting to get setup for saltwater. Hope to start tying my own flies soon.

Wait now! Hay! Bass fishing especially competition is very much about skill, bait size, color, vibration, depth, presentation, contours, bottom type, structure, etc, etc, etc. But every species you target has their nuances.
I will give you the fact that there is a fascination with fiding the perfect fly, or roll cast or whatever, but let me see you skip a 1oz jig 40ft under a dock, or lay a light worm 1" from base of a cypress tree with limbs hanging above water 6".
Dont take anything away from the others because you like one better, to each is own. That is what is great about fishing is that you can find a preferred method and learn the skill well enough to be proficient. I can assure you, it is easier to diagnose a 25' wide stream for 300yds versus a 130,000ac lake with 900miles of shoreline, then there is offshore but that is easier than lakes too. Now that will spin the saltwater guys for ya.
I am giving you a hard time but I have found that Fly fishermen think they have found some Godly form of fishing for some reason. It's all fishing and all techniques even if you just put a worm on a bobber for little kid.
I grew up fishing in AK and my first rod at age 3 was yanked out of my hands by a big Northern Pike, I started crying and asked my dad to buy me another rod immediately, this was 1978. My dad was a fishing guide for over 20yrs so fishing is in my blood and I am happy you have found a love for it!

Like nymphing. Fished a lot in Montana and Wyoming. Missouri, Bighorn, Snake and Madison Rivers. Caught some big ole Rainbows on Missouri at Gates of The Mountains. Call it Land of the Giants near Craig Mt

Grayling are great to learn on, very willing feeders.
Where in AK? Lived there several years and have a lot of family there. Still travel back almost yearly. Most my time has been Fairbanks area but most family recently moved to Anchorage area for milder winters, haha! Everything is relative.

Been in the interior (Delta Junction) for most of the past seven years. JBER since earlier this year.

Delta Junction, the crazy Tanana river, been there a bunch. Last time there just few yrs ago it was -46F. We went to George Lake ice fishing. Bunch of wild buffalo and preserve buffalo in the way that day. Caught our limit of Northern with largest 18.6lbs. Big pike through the ice.
I travel south of Tok often into the Wrangells and spend 2wks on remote lakes for lake trout. Its all by snowmachine. I love Ice fishing.

Go North of Fairbanks to the Chatanika river about 20miles and fly fish it for grayling. 50 a in 5hrs should be your goal with 5/hr minimum. Awesome grayling water and they seem to be more tasty there. Obviously don't freeze well but good fresh. There is a small lodge called Chatanika Lodge and Bar, pretty fair but you can camp too. Lots of walk in locations if you look.

Fun sport. Most fresh water trout are caught underwater (nymphing) vs. on the water’s surface(dry flies). Caught my first brown on a wooly bugger.
If you are a novice, it’s best to hire a guide who can help you properly cast a flyline, show you various knots you’ll need to tie, and make the overall experience fun.

I fly fish and love it, mainly trout, mainly Colorado, Montana… dry fly whenever possible, learned to euro nymph this ast year and it’s incredible……. Been to Alaska many times, big rainbows that chase the salmon, steelhead, you name it…. Nothing like a 38” steelhead on a 8 weight rod….
I also tie my own flys….

Steelhead are the only ones I haven't caught on flyrod. Oops, and bull trout. Freshwater North America of course. I have been all over fishing, just not fly. Started it about 6yrs ago.

Caught only one steelhead in my life so far. A hen (female) in Deep Creek which is north of Homer, AK. My good news the fight they put up! Steelhead and cohos fight like no other.

I know a former model from Cali that is now a fly guide and bird dog guide in Montana. She never shot a gun until 8yrs ago when I took her to AK for a summer fishing trip and we shot Trap. She flipped 180degrees, now she takes me hunting. Pretty awesome.

I guess I'm a "casual" fly fisherman. I started learning and practicing when I was about 32 in the strip mine lakes in IL catching brim mostly but an occasional crappie was enticed. All this was to be good enough to fish in Wyoming and Yellowstone the following year.
I finally caught my first rainbow in the Wind River between Dubose, WY and Yellowstone and got to fish in Yellowstone too. What a thrill. I still use the same fly rod and reel even today as my go to, although I have others. I'm a single handed, traditional caster.

Need to do more of it. Alaska spoils a person into thinking you're an awesome fly fisherman.
I've fished all over South Central Alaska, but my favorite time has been fresh from the sea silvers in early September in the Katalla River not too far from Cordova. They aren't finicky and they are incredibly strong.

I have family in Cordova too, of course they are in the salmon business. Several yrs ago I was up there fishing for silvers and then hooked this maniac fish that thought it was a tarpon. Thought it was a big silver at first but after studying the fish and getting confirmed from local guide, I found out it was the genetic anomaly white king salmon. Very different from a king in that the meat it white, very oily and great on the grill. Later found out I could have sold it to a sushi restaurant for thousands. I spend most of my time in Valdez, Copper river and klutina when I salmon fish.
