Goodwin has got to go. We have gotten steadily worse defensively over his tenure here and this year's numbers against the run especially are just plain unacceptable. With the caliber of players we have on the defensive side of the ball especially, it is ridiculous to be ranked 59th in rushing defense and 61st in yards per attempt with the personnel we have. Who should we go get? Gimme some names and why.

I don't think Goodwin is all that bad but I do agree our run defense is pathetic. Something has to change.

20’s, 30’s and much higher..really higher.
Looking at these higher stats and more losses, I’d say something has to give or just become a 2-4 loss program.

Perhaps the issue is we don't have Wilkins, Big Dex, Bryant and Cle as our starting defensive line as the market has changed and our HC refuses to play the game. At this point we don't have two DEs who are starter worthy. Changing coordinators does nothing to address the root cause.

I saw a lot of posts here this past summer guaranteeing that we would be a top 10 defense this year. Well, how did that prediction work out?

superstars.. at least two of them were. But those guys wanted to play for Coach V bc of his reputation. It'll be hard finding a name like that to come here to coach defense. We just got really fortunate he wanted to coach here.

I would argue that Venables was able to creatively put together better defenses before those players came to Clemson. He struggled early on at Clemson, mainly due to some similar roster issues Goodwin is dealing with now. But Venables still put together better defenses than Goodwin has. Even though Goodwin arguably started out with a better roster than Venables did when he first got here.
I just don't see the creativity and willingness to adapt out of Goodwin that Coach V had. I also see a drop in overall Defensive intensity and issues with his position group since he has been here. Maybe I am wrong, but I just feel like Goodwin lacks the experience needed to adapt and come up with solutions to the issues we have.
I also agree with you that we need to use NIL more effectively to get better and more athletes on the field. And I also agree that Dabo needs to get better at roster management. Both of those issues are relatable to the performance of the Defense, but I see these as separate issue as to the performance of the defense. When your defense cannot tackle consistently, and your position group is constantly exposed because they continue to take terrible angles and either under pursue or over pursue, and further look confused when something new is presented to them during games, then there is an issue with instruction and game prep.

Good thoughts. We have to find a way to get and keep more 5* and 4* recruits (NIL), and use the portal to get more experienced upperclassmen to fill in the gaps (NIL). We need a billionaire sugar daddy or momma. lol

When Dabo promoted Goodwin to DC in December 2021, he said this:

"I'm always going to promote from within, when it's feasible," he said. "I've hired people from all kinds of places, but I'm going to hire the best person. I'm not going to hire what other people want me to do, I'm going to hire who's best for this university, for me and for this team." -Dabo Swinney
Dabo assured us that Goodwin was a great defensive mind who was ready to be our defensive coordinator, despite never being a defensive coordinator or even a position coach at the college level. I don't doubt that Goodwin is really smart. He drew rave reviews from his time as an NFL analyst. But that is a far cry from being a defensive coordinator and overseeing a large staff of position coaches while also managing dozens of defensive players.
Goodwin is a great example of a guy who knows a lot about football, and who seems to be a nice person, who was unqualified for the position Dabo put him in. We have numerous examples of this type of hiring decision by Dabo, which I believe has hurt our program even more than his stances on the transfer portal and NIL. If we don't have highly qualified coaches, recruiting suffers, player development suffers, and we don't win as much as we used to.

I think all the experiments need to end … we were on top of college football and the hottest brand in the game and instead of hiring whoever we wanted Dabo wanted to try to build this coaching tree, that (directly related to player evaluation and development) set us back imo. I think he sees it which is why he made the move and got Luke. Clemson is still a super attractive job and I’m in the minority here I’m sure about spiller but I think he’s the only one (and Reed and Luke of course) that should safe atleast another year. Spiller has brought in a little talent and it’s not like Clemson has ever been a destination for top 5 backs but he’s built with this class a pretty respectable room, lets just see how they develop. Also wasn’t Riley’s contract only two years ?

The only opinion that matters is William Christopher Swinney's...I also think while we are at it, we need to get rid of Conn, Richardson, Grisham and maybe a couple of others. I also think we need to fundamentally change how we approach recruiting, NIL and the portal. I hope all this gets done soon, but I don't think all that gets done this off season as Dabo is slow to change.

I addition strength and conditioning needs overhauling... Our guys consistently look weak and slow. And I can't help but think that it impacts the number of injuries...

Some has to do with lack of depth, and some has to do with coaching. If a change needs to be made, I'm sure Dabo will do it the same way he did with the O Line.
But if a change isn't made, I have to ask what it actually takes to prove you aren't up to a job at Clemson.

Completely agree.
Perhaps its wishful thinking but I believe the sun has already set on Wes and we will have a new DC next year. The downward slide is rather dramatic.
Then the only question is if we wait until after the season or we cut bait after this weekend and give someone an interim shot.
I also would expect (hope) we have a dedicated ST coach next year

Let me ask you this.........if you were coming out of HS as a 5-star rated defensive player, a sure fire NFL player some day.....would you want to go play and learn from someone who never played, never coached before this gig, looks like a roady for the Beatles and is quiet as a little mouse sitting in a corner, diagraming defenses. Is THAT where you are going to enhance your draft stock?
