There is little evidence that a proven guy at one spot will be successful at a new spot vs an unproven guy. Take a look at Texas, Florida and Nebraska as examples. How many proven HCs have they hired since they last won a National Championship who have since been fired? All had experience and great track records. Alabama just fired a DC who had 15 years of coaching experience.

HC going into a dysfunctional place is in trouble. A DC coming to Cemson is in the money. The program is good. We have players. Dabo was taking about fundamentals in the post game after the playoff. That can get fixed before the Spring Game.

He def has replacements in mind that are still playing games....college or NFL, so I say...take all the time he needs and make a solid hire.

I agree. If we want to lure recruits for visits and possible commitments, I am sure they want to know who’s coaching them.
I also wonder if it is 1 month or sooner because that DCs current team is still alive in the playoffs.

Said all the right things about Wes. Didn't have to give a reason for making the change. Didn't have to say anything negative about Wes' job performance. We all saw it.
I was struck by this non-statement:
"I will start the interview process immediately and will hope to have our new defensive coordinator named by the end of the month or sooner."
Translation, "I could make the announcement Monday or Tuesday but I'm not gonna commit to that."
My translation: "We finalized the details of Wes' departure Sunday night. I've been working on his replacement for some time now. As soon as we can finalize the details, I'll announce it. But, we gotta cross the t's and dot the i's first."

I hope Wes is able to take something from this and be a better coach because of it

Great leaders don't become great leaders by not publicly admitting and being accountable when they have made a mistake....for example selecting someone for a position to insrtuct and lead people in a skill or subject matter in which they no actual experience in.

After having spent all of my adult life defending this country (6 years military & 30 years federal law enforcement) I am very confident that I understand leadership principles very well. Along with numerous accomplishments, I have made mistakes, but I have never been shy about publicly acknowledging those mistakes. As a leader, I realize that " Success has a million fathers, failure is an orphan. " When you make a mistake have enough integrity to admit it. Don't allow a narrative to start blaming others. Own your mistakes and when there is a success you spread the accolades to your team and stand back and let them get the praise they deserve. I know I am not a better football coach then Swinney but when it comes to selecting a DC and looking at his past selection of Wes and the unheard " hiring hungry " criteria as a measuring stick, I can say with certainty I would have made a better selection who was more qualified then Wes especially after having to uphold the standard set by Venables.

Does Dabo owe fans a public apology for failing to meet ridiculous expectations?
It's called taking a chance. He knew failure was a possibility before he named Goodwin the DC, and still thought he was worth it. God forbid anyone do that.

This year…I haven’t looked at the numbers but in truth I’ve been disappointed in our tackling for at least 2 yrs now,,,however, I must say that in addition to poor tackling, the schemes/alignments have been clearly worse this year…perhaps OCs have seen something in our system that was found to be consistently beatable…either way Wes seemed like a good guy but maybe makes a better analyst than coordinator. Good luck to him…looking for a great hire from Dabo,,, he’s been on a tear his last few!!

Dabo should call Nick Saban for advice to replace, not only the Defensive Coordinator, but also the strength coach. There was no “nasty” in the defense this year.

While many have agonized over the state of our football team the last few years, I never believed it was because someone failed to give his best. I am still of that mindset.Sometimes no matter how you try, things just won't come together for you. I can only imagine the nightmare of recruiting and coaching 18 to 45 year old players. I really do wish you well! Just don't end up at USuC..that never ends well. Good luck!

100% agree, he gave it his best and we should be grateful for that.
It's one thing to make the best decision when you have a spreadsheet full of analytics open in front of you that you can stew over for hours on end.
It's another thing to have to make those same (or bigger) or bigger decisions while you are baking in the hot sun, trying to get an update on players, managing where the ref spots you, dealing with penalties, and then taking all that information and creating an answer in less than 30 seconds or so.
I imagine that's a skill that takes a lot of time, a lot of huevos, and a general knack/artistry. Wes got a good baptism into that world. It will make him better. BV sure did make it look easy, eh?

Bingo. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.
Wes gave Clemson a TON of great years, so it can't hurt to take the time to appreciate that, too. I do think he gave it his best shot and similarly some things can take time to learn and perfect (like live coaching). He will do great wherever he ends up. Wish him the best and grateful for his time and impact here. Looking forward to our next defensive chapter, too.
Go Tigers!
