I didn’t want Tommy Bowden fired because he was a consistent winner

Feels so silly now. Incredible change for the program where a 9 win season under Bowden was great and 10 wins under Dabo is usually secured in November...

He’ll just go on a passive aggressive rant about how the basketball program doesn’t have the support that football gets, so we should be satisfied with what we have.

That annoying practice is reserved for those of you who don’t like what I say about football, so you bring up basketball to criticize it in a pathetic attempt to make yourselves feel better.

other than the fact that I wish the administration and some fans would support it better.
My views on football, whether good or bad, have no bearing on basketball.

Other sports are okay accepting an incredibly low ceiling by all reasonable standards. For example, a basketball program that infrequently makes the field of 68 year after year with the same person in charge?

Each sport should be evaluated based on it own relative advantages and disadvantages.

Clemson football has a ton of advantages compared to the rest of the ACC so not winning the ACC this year was a huge disappointment.
Conversely, Clemson basketball has many disadvantages compared to the rest of the ACC, so winning a conference championship isn’t expected.
This isn’t hard.

1. The ACC sucks at basketball. Now would be the time to make a run if we were good.
2. Oliver Purnell never seemed to have trouble consistently getting to the tournament. He didn’t need excuses the way you or your boss does. He was also fun to watch and had fan support. With the facilities you have now he would have been almost unstoppable.

then you get that one job where you bring home $500 every week and 2 whole weeks of vacation and you thought it couldn't get any better than that... That was the West to Bowden transition for me.

Exactly. I sincerely thought it was a mistake. Really liked Dabo and bought in early. But thought it 5 years it would be a similar result. Whew. I’ll happily eat crow on that one.

Tommy lost his locker room. Players would play at home for the fans but not on the road where they needed a coach. When things went bad Tommy would walk down to end of sideline and get down in his knee like he was not part of the team. He lost his team.

^^^^ THIS! I would see him squat down at the end of contested games and basically shut down. I first saw it when GT beat us at the end of the game and then that coaching debacle against Auburn in the Bowl. As soon as I saw him squat I knew it was game over. He was pretty good at several things, but anything with pressure just wilted him imo.

can't remember exactly when, but at one point he actually said that gameday was his least favorite part of coaching, and it showed.if that was his true belief, then he never should have been a head coach.it's my opinion that if you're the ceo of a team, then management of the players and other coaches during a game should be your most important and favorite aspect of the job.

But he was not a consistent winner.

And he was not winning nine games per season.
While he was coach a few seasons had 12 games, but most of his seasons had 11. While he was head coach they experimented with a 12 game regular season.
Some years he won seven some years he won nine. And not all of those seasons had the same number of games.
But it was obvious his third season he was never going to be a championship coach. His first two seasons Clemson made a lot of progress. Halfway through his third season it was obvious Clemson was a completely different program. What was the difference? Rich Rodriguez. He wasn’t the same coach without Rich Rodriguez on the staff.
Midway through season three I was on here saying he needed to go. I was on here saying he will never win at a consistently high level and never come close to a national championship. And I was right!
Anyone that understands football could see that those were terribly coached football teams. One week we would beat a top-five Florida State team then next week get blown out by Wake Forest. When you are that wildly inconsistent week to week you are a poorly coached football team.
His win loss record was padded by cupcakes!
This was his record in the ACC:
5-3 6-2 4-4 4-4 5-3 4-4 4-4 5-3 5-3 1-2
That’s 43-32 in the ACC. 4.67 wins and 3.33 loses per season .573 winning percent
If you think that is success in the ACC you are crazy! That will get you fired at NC State or North Carolina. This is Clemson! We should be dominating the ACC every year! I don’t care who is coach!
In nine full seasons he never finished better than second in the division.
And again this doesn’t describe how insanely inconsistent we were week to week, which is again a sign of a poorly coached football team!
The only thing he got right was his success versus South Carolina. But he even screwed that up one year When he made the single dumbest coaching decision I think I have ever seen at the end of a football game.

Hammer, meet nail head. Tommy was propped up by two things early on. His last name and Rich Rod. As soon as Rod left, he had one thing keeping him afloat for another season, that was Woody. Woody made up for subpar teams with an absolutely electric playmaking ability. He was Mike Vick BEFORE Mike Vick and one of the most exciting QBs to play college football. My opinion at least. And yet his last game in a Clemson uniform was played in Boise on surf turf agaisnt LA Tech and one of the McCown Brothers, Luke maybe? Unreal! Still, he DID in his own way get the process started that Dabo built upon, and most important hire our current coach who has set all these standards. Go Tigers!

Riding back from Wake on Thursday night with 3 of my buddies and we were fairly certain that was his last game. Team was uninspired to say the least.

Completely hear you and agree with almost everything in hindsight. At the time, I thought that the ability to beat a Miami or FSU was going to be hard to replace and that it would be more likely to improve on consistency. Continue to win some of the big games and win the games you should win, that was my hope for TB. Just felt like the team was close but could never seal the deal.
As a minor point of clarity, I was saying that the 9-win season was a good season under TB. That’s meant to juxtapose to the chicken little response to a 10-win season. Clearly Dabo has reframed the definition of winning and standard around the program. I’m willing to admit my poor assessment during the TB era due to having a limited vision of the ceiling of the program. Glad I was wrong! Would’ve continued to pull for the tigers either way... but it is a lot more fun with all this winning!
