So why shouldn't the schools go ahead and give it to them?
For that matter, everyone's going to die eventually, so why shouldn't teachers be allowed to shoot them?

It was like when I was dating that youth director. The kids in her youth group knew we were doin' it. The kids in her youth group were probably doing it more frequently than we were. That doesn't mean it was okay to be all PDA around them.

The girl has probably raw dogged a couple doods anyway. Sheltering a child throughout high school is only going to lead to more problems down the road, especially if they go away for college.

Not having read whatever garbage is popular among the other girls is just as bad as being the last one to get ##### (or the first one to get #####). So few of them have the confidence in their own taste to say they're not going to read trash like 50 Shades.
Now, that doesn't explain why you read it.

2 years. Then probably wait till 30 to have a kid. So that adds 4 more years. Then add 14 years to that in order to make your wish come true.
Should we exchange numbers? 20 years is a long time.

is no way you'll condone your 14 yr old reading something that explicit.
I mean, unless I've wrongly pegged you as someone with at least SOME sense.
Reread the passage and tell me you would give that to your 14 yr old neighbor, cousin, niece to read. And you could look their parents in the eye and be all like "what? I don't think it's that bad".

Presumably you would be responsible enough as a parent to have parental controls set on your tv.
Which channel would you find that on other than a premium channel or on-demand, again assuming you would have SOME filter?
Or let's start here: Are you going to filter ANYTHING from your kids? Any internet or tv filter?

but there is sex in almost every show.
Also, yes, I will filter channels for kids, but at what point do you turn them off? This is high school though, not middle school or elementary school. I read books that had sex scenes in it and its not like it turned me into this unstoppable force that needed to get some poosay. 100% of the time I read through it just to get it over with so I could be prepared for whatever quiz was going to be the next day.

14 is 14.
When I was 14, 9th grade was in middle school.
When to turn off the filter? Not real sure. Not about turning the kid into a prostitute, more about exposing them to stuff THAT graphic. Yes they will have a basic idea of what is going on by 14, but to PROVIDE and CONDONE them reading something that graphic? C'mon man.
Everyone can raise their kids differently, and I wouldn't necessarily agree that the majority is always right. That being said, I think you would find yourself in the minority on this one...and by minority I mean probably 90%+ parents would agree with me on this one.

May 7, 2014, 9:41 AM

My oldest nephew is 7. The last thing on his mind is MTV.
All Im trying to say here is, its a book. Its not pornography. Clearly the teacher had approval to use the book in her classroom from someone higher up than her. They didnt send the approval form home with kids, which was a mistake. If someone high up in my school board approved this book, then they approved it. If the teacher used it without approval, there lies my second problem.
Everyone raises kids differently. Currently, you have experience I do not, but I was at that age more recently than you. A 14 year old reads this book and hardly even notices what they just read, or just isnt reading the book at all, especially if its for an assignment.
Sorry if I have offended you, but this is just my opinion, which isnt meant to upset you or anyone else.

And while agreed it was approved by someone, I cannot imagine for the life of me why. And would bet that 90%+ parents would agree...not the time nor place nor subject matter (at least presented like that) for a 14 yr old.

probably a less racy alternative to whatever lesson it may have tied into. Sure, the sex is out there. The youths these days know what is going on shockingly early. But the school shouldn't assign things that put their mind in the gutter.

people out there who don't see any big deal with this. I heard the lines in the book this morning, anyone who thinks that's acceptable reading for 9th graders is insane. There's got to be boundaries.

as stuff that's on general broadcast TV as it is now.
And not nearly as graphic as other required books. Just because it deals with sexuality it is suddenly uber taboo; however, we require kids to read Huck Finn, which is full of complete racism.

Or just print the cliffs and give it to her:

Huckleberry Finn, etc.
All of very graphic language, incredibly racist tones, overall lessons can easily be misinterpreted, etc.
I have not made an argument that I thought the school is right in making kids read the book...in fact, I do think it was wrong for required reading. My argument is that it isn't as big of deal as people are making it out to be...and especially not one to go "crack skulls" over.

I'm making a point that tiny amount of sex is a huge taboo, but massive amounts of violence seem kosher.

Why are they assigning Jodi Picoult in school anyway?
May 7, 2014, 1:34 PM

Trash is trash. A better writer would've found a more artful way to say something similar rather than be so explicit.
I'd be more upset about the dumbing down of the curriculum than about the silly pornographic scene in the novel.
At any rate, whether kids will look at #### on the internet or not shouldn't make any difference in what gets assigned for reading at school. I'm not sure our vices are the best guides for our education.

from the book? What is the lesson going to be? Teachers often try to assign books that kids WANT to read over dry classics in which similar themes are addressed. It doesn't matter as much the comparative quality of the writing as much as the themes presented.
Step 1: get the kids to read a book (hard part)
Step 2: analyze themes, structure, characters, etc...
Step 3: write ideas down and turn in or talk about in class
Step 4: ?
Step 5: profit!

more because it's just not a meritorious piece of literature deserving of required reading in the canon of lit.
Those decrying its sexual nature probably didn't understand about half of the Shakespeare you read in High School.
Go re-read Act I, Scene 1 in R&J.
That's some pretty churlish locker room talk.
