Hunter Johnson

I’ve been thinking about what he brings to the table this year.
Have any of you ever said, “If I had the knowledge/brain that I have now, in my 17/18 yr old body; I would have been 10x better my senior year of football….”
Hunter Johnson may have a similar feeling coming back to Clemson. My main point is, he was once a top tier HS QB. He had the misfortune of being outplayed by one of the best college QBs of all time showing up his sophomore year. He is the “old man” on the team now with no pressure on him.
If DJ looks like he did last year, and Cade isn’t quite ready; I wouldn’t be overly shocked if Hunter Johnson took the reigns and had a really good year.
I really need this season to start. The suspense is killing me.

The system that's run from school to school could make or break a QB, and maybe the Northwestern system just wasn't a fit for Hunter, just as the The Chad's system wasn't a fit for Cole Stoudt.

I don't think he would be any worse than dj was last year.
If DJ doesn't significantly improve, I could see hunter johnson getting some PT.
Hunter Johnson was pretty bad at Northwestern as well, so I still don't think he would be a great option.

I +1 you. Not being cocky about Northwestern at all. But, a couple of things. 1. Hunter was not the starting QB. 2. That was the Big 10 abbreviated season. I have attached a link of who all they played to get to a very good record. To include beating the brakes off of Auburn! Of course, that same year I think SCAR beat Auburn. That same year; didn't App go to Columbia and beat SCAR? Not sure about the year there.
Point being; i've never looked at a Big 10 schedule and went oh, that's an impossible slate of games. Maryland, Nebraska, Illinois, Purdue............come on.

He’s here for one reason and one reason only. That’s to provide depth in case of emergency. He may not even be ahead to Hunter Helms. But he does provide knowledge and can show how to work. He’s going to be great for the QB room.

I disagree. I hope he is not needed this season, but especially in the early games, he would be the best choice is DJU goes down. He is a capable back up, something we lacked last season.

The kid turns it over way too much. 7 TDs to 9 interceptions across three years, although that sounds a lot like Dj's stats from last year. His best year was his freshman season at Clemson.

I think HJ was a great add but for leadership and stability....not for his play on the field. I may be full of it as usual but would expect Wiles and Helms to be on the field before HJ. Regardless if we get that deep in the depth chart we will surely not be having the season most of us expect.

It'd be a feel good story and real life can be stranger than fiction.
However, I don't think Hunter Johnson is a threat to take over unless we have worst case scenario happen.
HJ is at best 3rd but most likely 4th or 5th on the depth chart going into fall camp.
It'd be a cool story no doubt but HJ at this point should be considered more of a student-coach/insurance policy than a sleeper.

I would think Hunter Helms is ahead of HuJo at this point (or by the time the season rolls around). It doesn't really matter, Dabo has the team in a much better position this season than last season. That is what counts.

I think Hunter is a "Coach in Waiting" as we have seen Dabo do over the years. He will be there to take over when Streeter moves on (or fails). He is a brilliant guy and it will be interesting to see what kind of coach he will make.

when he left for Northwestern. He moved from my favorite CFB coach to my 2nd favorite coach.
But let's be real: Hunter flamed out so badly at Northwestern we better hope he doesn't see any meaningful time on the field.
Some 5-stars do well in college, some are complete busts. As good a guy as he is, Hunter falls into the latter category. This is not a reflection of his character, just results on the football field.
I believe he is a great young man and will succeed very well in life after football.

How often tho, has a college had 2 Five star QB (top of their position class type guys) be busts in a 3-4 year span. I would think that statistically DJ or HJ would have to play better with another chance. I am most excited about Cade with the little I have seen from anybody in that room, but won’t really know anything until Labor Day gets here.

It's going to be between DJ and Cade. Cade is way too talented to take a back seat to Hunter. The competition he faced in HS was tops (or among the top) in the country. We know what DJ can do when healthy and confident.

I, too, was so disappointed by Hunter's performance at NW. But one thing that makes me think "hmm maybe??" about coming back to Clemson is this: Clemson has a MUCH higher caliber supporting cast than he had at NW. Not saying we win a natty - but he may could help us win a few games if he had to.

His goal in returning was as a GA. Being added to the roster was a bonus. He will likely spend the season working as a suited up GA trying to learn the coaching side.

I don’t know. There are so many ways this QB spot could play out this season. It’s been the longest off season in over 10 years because 2021 was the first year in a long time that our offense was offensive.

Lemon Tiger. . . . . ."beautiful logic" but
Jul 21, 2022, 8:58 AM

Lemon Tiger - I hope you are right! I sincerely do; if the situations you gave are the case and DJU is struggling and Cade isn't quite ready.
Hunter has no Trevor standing over his shoulder now. Hunter has much better personnel around him now than he did at NW. Hunter is comfortable now; no pressure if he doesn't start.
He is a very nice 5-star insurance policy. I wouldn't doubt if he saw DJU struggle last season and said; I could have helped. It should be interesting no doubt. If nothing else; he will push the other two to become better. Kyle Richardson is a QB whisperer - who I am hoping has a decent amount of time with the QB's and not just the TE's. This will be key as our passing game should look a bit different this season. There will be air raid concepts combined with some of the HUNH spread stuff. Which should make the offense much more explosive.
I can't wait. A little competition is good for DJU and Cade; so I hope this beautiful thought has teeth enough to at least push those other QB's. Good Post Lemon Tiger!
