Bubble teams that don't make the CFP....

Dec 3, 2024, 3:51 PM

Alabama, Miami, among many others - maybe even USuC - do guys start jumping ship to the transfer portal once it's known they're out of the CFP, or maybe opt out for the NFL? Does anyone really want to play in the Citrus Bowl (or whatever it's called now)? Or Pop-Tart Bowl, Cheez-It Bowl, Duke's May Bowl, etc? This 12-team playoff may end up doing more harm than good in that respect. It'll be good if you make it, but could decimate your lineup if you don't. I could see a lot of Miami guys jumping ship in a repeat of what happened with FSU last year - transferring or opting out for the NFL. Could totally reshape a team, right Coach Norvell?

I think this is a legit concern... you already see it from teams not playing in

conference championships or with a chance to get in now.

Why would they? They had great years where they are and realize if just a few plays were different they would be in this year.

Its not about having a great year where you are. It's about $$$$$$ and if you had a great year $$$ go up. There are very few players loyal to programs in this new landscape it is about the all mighty $$$.

Its not just the portal.

It's also opting out for the best athletes whose eligibility is ending and they have potential to be drafted by an NFL team.

They would be crazy to play in a meaningless bowl game and risk injury.
Every non playoff bowl is meaningless now. The NCAA has always defined bowls and exhibitions. Now the athletes have figured that out.

See Ohio State's QB and best receiver last year as an example.
