Let's start with the offense. The stats that never get mentioned in the box score are probably the most important in this game.
The offensive line came up huge for Ellington allowing him the chance to rack up 231 yds. However, as much as the big boys deserve a lot of the credit, Andre looked better than ever last night. I tried to count the number of broken tackles but lost track. His vision, balance, and ball control were spectacular.
The play of Tajh Boyd was mentally sound. His footwork, pocket presence, and awareness contributed to a night that was bigger than his numbers. I don't remember any mental errors. He did have a few "bad" passes but it seemed to be more of a mechanical issue than mental. The interception was not a great pass but it was still a catchable ball.
I think the biggest stat for the offense was the 320 yards rushing to 208 yards passing. The ability to run the ball over, around, and through the Auburn Defense allowed the Tigers to setup almost any pass play.
I saved this one for last because this is where we made the biggest difference. On third down, our offense converted 8-17 (47%). Our defense allowed Auburn to convert 4-13 (30%) on third down.
The defense allowed thre drives inside the Clemson 30 after half time. Each of those drives resulted in Field Goals.
Kiehl Frazier, hailed as a great dual threat quaterback was held to -9 yards on 9 rushing attempts. Obviously his sack yardage was taken away from the total yards but for a scrambling quarterback to have less than 50 yards, that is a pretty good job up front.
There were some disheartening issues along the way last night but it is game one. The tight ends have some work to do with their hands. So do the receivers. I counted 6 dropped passes and there may have been more. Four of the six drops were on third down. The score could have been a lot different if we make half of those catches.
Notable stats for week one. Ellington leads the nation in rushing yards (FBS). He is also 13th in average per rush with atleast 10 carries. Hopkins leads the nation in receptions with 13 and is tied for 15th in yardage. CatMan is tied for first in Field Goals (4) with 2 others. He also is the only kicker to kick 1 from each of the first four levels (1-19. 20-29, 30-39, 40-49).
Looking ahead to next week in just a few. Have a great day.
