I have recently discovered the "matchup finder" feature on sports-reference.com. It's great for proving just how little return we've gotten on our investment in basketball under Coach Brownell. For today I ran numbers for all 15 teams in the ACC for total games played against top 25 opponents and true away games against top 25 opponents from the 2010-2011 season to present. Here is what I got.
Total Games Played Against Ranked Opponents - Clemson 12th place in ACC Total Road Games Played Against Ranked Opponents - Clemson tied 12th place in ACC Total Ranked Wins - Clemson 12th Place in ACC Total Road Ranked Wins - Clemson 13th Place in ACC Ranked Win % - Clemson 11th place (25%) Ranked Road Win % - Clemson 13th place (6%)
BC is below us in all categories WF is below us in all categories except total road ranked games played (34 to 31) GT is below us in all categories except road ranked games played (37 to 31), road ranked wins (4 to 2), and road rank win percentage (11% to 6%) NC State, the only other team to appear below us in any category, is below us in total road ranked games played (30 to 31)
Let me know if there is a different matchup examination anyone would like to see.

I believe that would be considered a lunatic fringe post! The group is growing! I consider myself a charter member!

I'm over here raising my hand. I wanted him gone after year two. It was obvious he didn't have what it takes. He inherited a good program and threw it in the dumpster. The Brownell Bros love to throw those players under the bus to absolve Brownell. Even if they are right, Brownell is still responsible for not making the necessary changes.
Purnell and Barnes inherited programs that were in serious trouble. Barnes turned things around immediately with a group of players dubbed the worst in ACC history. Since 1984-85, only 1 season not coached by Larry Shyatt ranks worse than the team Purnell inherited. Purnell took a little longer but improved yearly until having tournament caliber teams every year from year 4 on. Not making the tourney in 06-07 is one of the bigger screw jobs we've ever gotten. 25 wins. Highest ranked SRS not to make the tourney since the 64 team expansion. 5 lower rated Clemson teams (nearly half of all bids since expansion) have made the tourney including 2 of Brownell's 3.
Brownell regressed for 3 straight seasons.
And, as far as TNet is concerned, I kept my opinion to myself until Judge Keller started out and out making crap up to pump Brownell. At a certain point, his nonsense demanded rebuttal because people were actually believing it.

mentality . . . .
What are we doing TODAY ?
We don't have a leader that can articulate where he wants to take us. I personally don't think he understands that he SHOULD have a plan and a vision for what he wants to do.
He's just coaching basketball from one game to the next, and pretty poorly, at that.
All that OP and Barnes and Cliff Ellis and all that other stuff - who cares ? ?
He sucks at being a leader, he is a marginal basketball coach, he doesn't engage the fan base or the community . . . he has to go.
We need to want to succeed at basketball. All the posts on here seem to indicate that we have support for that.
A sold-out tarhole game seems to indicate we have the support for that. A BRAND NEW gymnastics team seems to indicate that we will support ANYTHING - as long as it isn't the same ol' tired mess for the last 14 years.

For me it boils down to just a couple of things...

1 - The words that best describe the program under his leadership are inconsistency and mediocrity.
2 - Just three NCAAT appearances in thirteen seasons (and one of those was with OPs players).

How about some relevance as it relates to Clemson? This can help the Fire Brad crowd firm up their argument.
Go and compare this year vs the previous 5 or his total tenure.
Then, compare that to Oliver Purnell, who many of the Fire Brad crowd think was a doozy of a coach. That will give you a one to one, Coach v Coach comparison.

I think comparing him to his contemporaries here and now in the ACC is more relevant. Focusing on the past is in no way helpful in moving forward. While things have worked out (quite accidentally) for the best in football, fear of falling back to a Tommy West era is part of why so many clung so long to Tommy Bowden long after it was obvious that he had reached his ceiling. Few actually would admit that they were "afraid" of that and came up with ridiculous explanations for why he was the right guy and was just about to turn the corner. Just as they are doing with Brownell. As for Purnell, I think he had hit a ceiling and thought his departure was an opportune time to upgrade without having to fire a coach who had done a lot for this program. Obviously we flopped big time on that.
I'll work on some comparisons to post between Brownell and his predecessors that haven't already been debated a thousand times.

I don’t give a pis* about any stats unless he gets to the postseason lol
And actually, our team is good enough to win in the postseason. Our coach has me doubtful.
