When I went to Spartan High we played in the state finals 2 of 3 years. Most don’t know it’s only three grades so not a bad percentage. Summerville was a state powerhouse in the 80’s and unfortunately the Vikings lost both in the roach. It was fun dominating all rivals then. Byrnes didn’t even exist.

Byrnes has been around since 1955, you went to high school before then?

He means that Byrnes was VERY BAD at football back then.

I remember that well back in the early 90s. Didn’t keep up with them prior to that. For a person my age Byrnes seemingly came out of nowhere near the turn of the century. I was completely shocked when I was in the military talking to people back home and found out that they had become one of the top programs in the nation and were THE team to beat in SC.

I went there I know the history, I played for them and my class was the one to win state titles four years in a row. Prior to that, we’d only won three titles, one in the 70s and 2 in the 80s. I guess it was a shock to people who didn’t have a son/grandson who played in the district. We ran the same offense from rec leagues in 5th & 6th grade, thru middle school into high school. Strength and speed training basically year round, passing league camps all summer, doing breakfast of champions at 5am then going to school afterwards. I had buddies who played at some of the “bigger” schools that didn’t do nearly the amount of work we put in.

Byrnes was a 3a school in the 80s. Won a 3a state championship. Didnt start growing until BMW showed up. Way smaller school than Spartanburg back then. Greer was the main rival until mid 90s
