Serious question : What do you think is a reasonable

Nov 19, 2014, 11:45 AM

Expectation of the Clemson football program year in and year out as of today?

Me personally, I don't see why we can't annually be in the same category as Alabama . I personally think 2 losses would be the max and 1 loss would be the goal at worst. But I'm in the group that thinks Clemson should be a national championship contender every year or we are doing things wrong.

I'm one of those strive to be the best or why bother guys. How bout you guys?

I would answer that... and even give you some

and even tell you that I am a Dabo supporter and a fan of theChad...

but I would get attacked furiously

staying clean off the field, graduating players.

That would be my hope and expectation for any team, including Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the least I want for my team.

Dood, you should have gone to Clemson. You are my kind of fan. Well, except for...you know.

Be top 3 in the ACC, with a title 2 or 3 times/10

Nov 19, 2014, 11:53 AM

You've got to expect the occasional 4 or 5 loss season just b/c shyte happens. But it shouldn't be the norm like it had been for the previous 20 yrs before '11.

The exception?

I don't think it matters. . People gonna dump or people gonna pump. .

There are Bama fans on message boards who want saban fired after every loss to.

Some people just want to have something to gripe about. We could go 12-0 every year & some people would find things to be upset about.

I think you are right... but I think the bigger issue.. the

Nov 19, 2014, 12:28 PM [ in reply to the question is. . is 1 loss the norm or ]

one that is glaring to me... is our lack of success vs. FSU and SCU. I know people will jump on me and say "they've been great lately", etc...

but

if we would win one or two more of those game, our program crosses that elite threshold, IMO. I would like to think that we are comparable to the AU's, LSU', UGA's, and SCU's, but winning games where talent is similar is an issue we struggle with. It just is.

Dabo has done a fantastic job beating teams we should in a weak ACC. He's won 2 big bowl games, and an ACCC. But, we have to start beating people when coaching is a premium.

Nov 19, 2014, 12:18 PM

With the financial resources, facilities, fan support and recruiting we have, we should be a perennial top 10 program. Period.

Screw Calford.

I think if you summarized the top 10 schools

Nov 19, 2014, 12:25 PM

financial resources, facilities, fan support and recruiting; You will probably see Clemson just outside the top 10. Probably in the high teens.

I don't even know if death valley is in the top 10 seating capacity any more. . Seems everyone has 90k+ now.

There are 30 other programs who would say the same.

Nov 19, 2014, 12:39 PM [ in reply to Re: Serious question : What do you think is a reasonable ]

We can't all be top 10 every year. I would say that we need to win the ACC several times every 10 years, one to two losses normally is acceptable. Have to win a MNC in the next 5 years.

If your always in the top 25, winning ACC championships, and getting in the playoff every few years.

We should be winning the ACC this year if not for the 10 things that went wrong vs FSU. And if only one had went right we would have won the Atlantic.

Re: There are 30 other programs who would say the same.

Nov 19, 2014, 12:41 PM

Minimum expectations are compete for the ACC title once every two years. Finish top 10-15 every year.

Again, no excuse with our facilities, recruiting and financial resources.

People on here always say this - probably without doing

Nov 19, 2014, 12:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Serious question : What do you think is a reasonable ]

any research. We ARE NOT top 10 in terms of facilities, fan support, and money. I haven't bothered to make a complete list, but here are 11 schools that are ahead of us.

FSU
Bama
LSU
Florida
Ohio State
Southern Cal
Oregon
Texas
Georgia
A&M
Auburn

-Then you have the former powerhouses that are hard to judge right now. Penn St, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame.

-Wisconsin has plenty of historical success, a good conference, and a great fan base. Most neutral observers would rank their program ahead of ours.

-Where does Michigan State rank? They have additional finanical help from great basketball program.

-South Carolina is our equal too in terms of everything except historical success.

All said, we probably fall in the 15-20 range.

Nov 19, 2014, 2:06 PM

Great post!

Playing in the ACC hurts us more than somewhat to admit. The SEC is bringing in boat loads of money compared to the ACC. I think Clemson will continue to have a tough row to hoe over the foreseeable future.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Boy! That sure was a serious question!***

Nov 19, 2014, 12:22 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson should be a 10 win team season in and season out.

Nov 19, 2014, 12:26 PM

That being said, a 10 win team with a few lucky breaks and few injuries has an 11-12 win season . By the same token. a 10 win team with a few bad breaks and a rash of injuries is a 7,8,9 win team. Some can't realize that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So your expectation is to the best program in the country

Nov 19, 2014, 12:34 PM

Sheesh. No wonder some of you are never pleased.

Maybe we can take some smaller steps here. Personally i would be really happy being at a level where we could consistently compete with FSU for the division and conference titles (maybe win about half of them), consistently make the big bowls, beat USC more than they beat us, and maybe occasionally get into the playoff.

I certainly don't expect Clemson to become Saban Alabama.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The question, are we a "football" school ?

Nov 19, 2014, 12:50 PM

Yes we are. Therefor, it is imperative that we Win a high percentage of our games, and we do. We have good young men who represent not only Clemson, but college football in general with high integrity. highs and lows will allows follow a program, no matter how successful. Alabama was a shell of what they are now, but they did what was necessary with the tools they had at their disposal and now they are the Gold Standard without question.

The paw is beloved, it stands for much more than W's or L's. We have a large fanbase, academic standards are high, graduation rate is high, scenic campus, monetary resources to sustain success, and also a beautiful Death Valley to visit 6 or 7 times a year!!!

College football is special. Clemson is special. I want us to compete at an elite level, and while we have had very good success of late I think we have everything needed to make it to that next level which is competing for a national title. Couple of big roadblocks in the way, but we have had chances and will put ourselves in position to take advantage of these chances.

Go Tigers!! I will stay orange forever and will follow our Tigers through every dip in the road and every peak they achieve.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would anyone be ok with high teens?

Nov 19, 2014, 1:22 PM

That' to me is like saying that what we did this season is your expectation, roughly. If that's our standard, then let's let's hire cheaper coaches and quit trying. Gt is outplaying us with far worse recruiting and coaches who make less.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would you make unrealistic goals?

Nov 19, 2014, 1:26 PM

What value does a standard have if it's unattainable? That just destines you to failure every year.

Re: Why would you make unrealistic goals?

Nov 19, 2014, 1:30 PM

I disagree with your logic. One could argue that both duke and gt are ahead of us right now. That should be impossible with our program. And accepting two losses in my mind is hardly unattainable. Why don't we just accept 4 or 5 losses and then what?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

GT and Duke are not ahead of Clemson as a program

Nov 19, 2014, 1:36 PM

I guess you aren't looking at anything reasonably.

i know there are other things to consider

Nov 19, 2014, 1:40 PM

But wins and losses have to be a huge factor or why bother playing the games. And most likely one of those teams will b playing for another championship , we won't .
