All I have to say is if it took a commissioned study and all that time to come to that conclusion then it's no wonder our bball program isn't getting better. You probably haven't commissioned a study to determine whether or not to extend brownlee's contract for another decade.
I could have told you 10 years ago that women's softball is huge among the younger crowd.
Oh, and to answer some peeps question - coots have had a softball team for a while now.

Can't disagree with that. It just shocks me that it took a study to tell them it was popular and how many young girls participate in it... They have tournaments near me where they travel from site to site to play and I've watched them for years. It's exciting, and it does draw a good crowd.

What shocks me is that you think any study would be just for "what's popular." It's a business man, you gotta do your studies on the financial side, the planning side, how this impacts scholarships and IPTAY, etc.
It's not as easy as saying "Hey, softball is popular among young people, let's put 'em over here and let'em play."

Well with Title IX rules and all there are certain things we have to do. With us being a southern school it makes much more sense to have a softball team than just a stand-alone women's diving team.
This has zero to do with basketball, and the administration spent a good chunk of change to renovate the facility the basketball teams play and practice in.

I grew up playing softball competitively year-round (high school, rec leagues, travel teams, etc.) then played one year at JUCO before transferring to Clemson. I still play on adult leagues a few nights per week. This is fantastic news! I know so many girls who would have loved to put on a Tiger uniform instead of other in-state (sometimes smaller) schools.
And, I didn't even consider transferring to South Carolina - gross lol.
But yeah, happy Tuesday to the softball world!

Awesome news!!! I think softball will do very well at CU. There's been many great players leave our state because of this. No knock on swimming & diving but those programs are kind of like the rowing team, they just don't make sense why they're offered. For years I've thought softball or bringing back wrestling would be a win-win for CU.

although facilities wise, I would say we caught up with the LJ renovation. Results wise, it's still like the Coot mating call, "Wait 'till Next Year."
Dorms for sure were half assed when I was there, spent 4 years in the Tin Cans. Now, granted that was a couple lifetimes ago.......
We do seem to be responding much quicker to the "Facilities Arms Race" in athletics than in some times past, I think we will spend the $$ on Softball, as it has potential to be a good revenue generating sport.
(Especially if we get us a Jennie Finch type pitcher!)

Great news, been streaming this for a couple few years. Nay sayers on here are mostly ( and im guessing) non softball fans and know nothing about it. There has been a power shift over Iast few years. Southeast is booming in talent. I coach girls everyday and most work harder and have 10x the passion and heart of most baseball players. Speaking from experience. Like I tell my girls, If softball was easy, it would be called baseball. Lol. I love baseball to tho. Long time overdo, it will generate money, just not from gate fees. So to all u guys that think softball sucks, go to a travel tournament and watch, better yet, go practice with some.

And will soon be a power. Before first pitch in the new stadium Clemson Softball will be more popular than all sport besides football, baseball and men's basketball. It will stay that way for some time. Softball is very entertaining to watch live and on TV. You don't have pitchers holding the ball on a mound for 60-70 seconds like that Coot pitcher did Friday night a week ago putting everyone to sleep. The competition is fierce but the woman traditionally have a lot of fun and act a little crazy which adds to the entertainment value.

I think Womens Softball is a great addition to Clemson Athletics. I have been a ASA and USSSA umpire for over 30 years. There is a huge following in this sport. The last figure I saw, there is over 150 travel teams in different age brackets in SC. At the High School level, I have seen on numerous occasions, better attendance at Softball games than at the same schools baseball games. I was at several games last spring with attendance of over 1000 fans per game. There is a huge talent base in SC from the High School teams down to 8 year old Travel Ball to Recruit from, and I'm sure that there are plenty of players that would love to wear Clemson Orange. Also, plenty of out of state players who would want to play for Clemson whose parents are Alumni. Give it a.chance, and I'll bet it will be a great addition to Clemson Athletics. GO TIGERS!!!

my mom was one of the best softball players I have ever watched. The girls play out of love of the sport, not possible pro future. I respect that. I just was hoping the next team added would be a mens lacrosse team. That is a fun sport that is getting more and more tv time. And the scores are interesting.
