Boat question:
Jan 23, 2013, 12:17 PM
|
|
Looking for a center console boat - will be used mainly at Keowee, but will be at Edisto 2-3x/yearly as well.
17-20 feet. Looking at Scout, Boston Whaler, Sea Hunt, Key West so far.
Any reason I should avoid those brands above? Or any other brands I should look at?

I've never lost money selling a boat. Buy'em right, sell'em the same way.
I wouldn't trade my time on the water for anything. Some folks like golf; to me it's an expensive waste of time. All depends on your priorities I guess.

I've been around boats my whole life, never had any more issues than you would with a car or something like that. I've actually probably had a lot more car issues. I think a lot of people just buy POS boats and don't maintain them like they should.

Its only a 5 grand "initiation fee" and $350/month for two years! And you might get to use a boat some time in the winter!
That is, if the guy who owns it doesn't run off with your money..like he did in Jacksonville and in Charleston.
I hear its back up now with about 4 boats.
My old neighbor used to buy a boat in December and sell it the next August...never lost money on one, and always had a different boat.

We looked into something similar on Keowee and the #s were a joke if you do the math.
Plus, you're stuck only on that lake - what if you want to go somewhere else? What if they go out of business? What if boats aren't available on high traffic weeeknds?
No thanks.

Nautic Star has bounced from 3 or 4 dealers in Charleston in a short amount of time (<3 years). Word was there was a lot of warranty work they didn't want to pay for.
Century was sold by Yamaha last year; quality and longevity of the new owners are yet to be determined.

You're probably going to pay a good bit more for the Whaler, and in all honesty I don't think you're going to see a big difference in quality or functionality in any of the brands you listed based on what you plan to do with it. I think Scout's tend to be a little bit more family friendly, as well.

Finding the hull that fits your needs is prolly more
Jan 23, 2013, 12:33 PM

important than the manufacturer. Mostly on Keowee, you don't need a deep v-hull, but if you intend to go offshore down at Keowee you will. Down here on the gulf, I see a lot of Cape Horns, Grady Whites , Whalers, Sea Pro hulls that can serve as dual use inshore/offshore.
If buying used, find someone that uses their boat frequently...they've more than likely taken good care of the engine and done the right maintenance.

Wide range of boats there. After having several and now owning none, my advice is to buy used. Just my .02
Key West, Sea Hunt, Sea Fox, etc. are the Chevy, Ford, Dodges of center consoles. They will likely meet all of your needs with less fit and finish, but better price.
Scout, Pioneer, Whaler, Pathfinder (Maverick), Ranger etc. are Cadillacs by comparison. I wouldn't say overall build quality is better but the fit and finish and options are better typically.
Power is also worth a lot of time considering. I like Yamaha and Suzuki 4-strokes, but I've been out of the game for a few years.
Enjoy your money pit and look forward to selling!
Oh, and run the motor regularly. Keep fresh gas in it. Ethanol is da debil.

I've owned 3 or 4 Scouts, all have been great.
Jan 23, 2013, 1:07 PM
|
|
I just sold (November) a 22' Scout walkaround and bought a 17' flats Scout. A little more trailerable and easier to use. Gas mileage is much better too.
I've had a Key West as well years ago; not a bad boat. Sea Hunts are a good value brand--you get a lot of boat for the money but their resale stinks. Whalers have good resale but they are way overpriced; the 17' Montauk is north of 35K now new. FYI--anything 17' Whaler is going to ride like crap. Might not mean much on a lake, but in anything with waves it will.
I'd recomend Scout, Key West/Sea Hunt (tie) and in a distant last, Whaler. Oh yeah..buy a Yamaha. Mercury outboards suck and new Evinrude ETEC's are so little known that they hurt resale, at least around here.

ever made. I'm not exagerrating here. Solid, powerful, strong engine.
If you do go Yamaha and buy used, be careful with 2002-2006 F200 and F225 (four stroke) engines. They had some bad parts in them that corroded and caused oil tank/exhaust leaks. Yamaha won't warranty them, but they have reduced the cost of the parts to fix them. A mechanic can scope the engine with the lower unit removed to see if theer is any rot. Some get it, some do not. After about late 2006 they changed parts on them in production and fixed the issue.

My new Scout has a F90 four stroke. Its basically the same as the 06/07 version. They haven't really changed (except for cowling decals in 2012) since Yamaha fuel injected them back around 2004-2005.
That 90 will push the 175 nicely--probably 42-45 mph. Good gas mileage, too.
Some big folks have complained about the 175/185/187 Scouts' scuppers letting water in the back of the boat but if you install Rabud "ping ping ball" type scuppers (about $15 each), there isn't a problem. The 185 Scout I had years ago never had that issue.

Why buy a center console that will be used mostly on a lake?
Jan 23, 2013, 2:11 PM

Center consoles suck for cruising and spending the day on the lake. The seating is terrible and they really aren't set up for any water sports except tubing. If you are a stripper fisherman I can understand.

We go down to Edisto 3-4x/year - not really enough to justify purely an ocean type boat.
Really just asking about CCs to see what opinions are.
Not quite sure what type of boat we're getting yet.

[ in reply to Yeah, but if you're just cruising the lake most of the time ] |

Of course like ^ said, it's probably hard to sell one too. I loved all of my CC's on booze cruising days. Being able to walk around makes the boat seem a lot bigger. Not always bumping into people walking bow to stern. I had a KW2020 with a t-top (loved it, but too big for inshore) and then a Pathfinder 1900. I miss them both. WITH KIDS, I'd probably go to a DC. That'll be my next, if not a pontoon boat again, but GAWD I'm tired of going slow.

If I could somehow keep the Nautique, I'd love to have me a 15-17 ft. CC. I really need multiple boats....A skiing, fishing, Donzi Classic 22', and new RXP Sea-Doo and I'd be set.

There isn't a perfect one, thats for sure.
I've never owned a pontoon. Not sure I'd ever want one.

Probably won't do it again, but as the family grows priorities change. The trihulls are bad ###. The dealership near me has a tricked out one with a 454 inboard with captain's choice. It's pretty cool.
Multiple boats would solve all our problems. Unfortunately, I've dumped them all but the john boat and it ain't going anywhere!
