Big 12 vs ACC...What about the money?...

May 25, 2012, 8:30 PM

I haven't seen anything conclusive or even remotely conclusive that you'll make much more money in the Big 12, if any. I can see that you might have a bigger TV deal. But some of that will be eaten by travel costs (40% estimated increase by FSU folks). Let's say you get an extra 1 to 3 million overall.

Is that really enough to justify a move like this? Your extra tier 3 probably won't even remotely approach what Texas is getting. And word is that Texas was overpaid, based on subscribers.

So, is there enough money for you guys to throw away the ACC?

New TV deal WITH Clemson and FSU- $25 million
Increase in home game revenue due to more premium games- $10 to $20 million
Income from 3rd tier rights- $2 to $8 million
Increase in post season play monies- $10 to $20 million

And that's just getting started

...less our $20 million buyout, of course.***

A large portion of the buyout would be paid by the big 12 since they got paid big money when a&m, Mizzo, neb and Colorado paid their exit fees.

That's all guesswork at this point. Nothing is concrete.***

Wishful thinking at best.

May 26, 2012, 10:27 AM

We already make money off of tier 3. There is no way bringing in one or two crappy football games and early season basketball games will bump us up to 8 million. And if it could that means we would already be making something similar.

Also looking at the numbers for the Big XII to go to $25M/team Clemson and FSU would have to bring in around $50M/year each to the conference.

Lastly 10 to 20 million more from more "premium games" is highly unlikely and nothing more than guesswork.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And that's the stage this thing is at...

May 26, 2012, 9:18 PM

The numbers I'm seeing are at the very least unproven. I do believe Clemson & FSU are taking a very hard look at the Big 12, and might move. But I'm not seeing the money yet.

It might be there. But I haven't yet seen anything credible or "signed".

I don't get it gosmitty. I know the conference is run by the NC schools, you know the conference is run by the NC schools, we all know the conference is run by the NC schools. That is pretty much the way it has been, that is the way it pretty much always will be. Why in the world are you interested in staying in this crappy conference? The football officials couldn't be more pathetic and the basketball officials couldn't be more biased. Every ACC post season tourney is now being held in NC where the NC schools hold an advantage. Heck, our state is banned from hosting any ACC tourney until the NAACP is appeased, which will probably never happen.

The football schools bring all the money into this conference, and what has this conference done for us? We almost lost some practices a few years ago due to the whole "girdlegate" incident, where every school was doing exactly as we were and we were singled out. There will be a bitter taste in every Clemson fans mouth about the ACC adding to our probation from now until the ACC ceases to exist. Yet, when UNC gets busted for academic fraud they get hit with a public reprimand. WTH is that? So, in short, screw the ACC. I hope if we go to the B12 you guys eventually find your way over there. I enjoy the rivalry with GT, but the NC schools have pretty much ruined this conference.

You say that, but the other schools forced Bebe out and the B12 is about to have a new commish that doesn't have ties to any of the schools. Do you see that happening in the ACC? I don't.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have no idea how much the Big12 is willing to help.

May 25, 2012, 10:14 PM

I know that must be something for the advisory committee to handle but seem like I read that the Big takes all travel expense off the top then the schools share the remainder of the revenues.

You can bet Clemson ain't taking a pay cut.

Re: Big 12 vs ACC...What about the money?...

May 26, 2012, 2:45 AM

Concerning the money, there is nothing solid yet.

What we do know is that the Big 12's contract as of now, without FSU and Clemson (no CCG) is going to average 20 million a year and be fully vested in 2015 (I have heard rumors reported that the contract is closer to 21 million per team but there is no verification of this)

The ACC is going to average 17 million a year and won't reach 17 million a year until 2021 according to reports but no one really knows because the ACC won't make the contract public, not even to member institutions.

What we can surmise.

1) Adding FSU and Clemson will surely add some money to the pot. Conservatively, let's say it only adds 1 million. Pitt and Syracuse additions to the ACC added 1 million. We will go with that even though FSU and Clemson bring more to the table that Pitt and Syracuse (I think they will bring 3-4 million extra in personally).
2) The Conference Championship game will be worth an addition 2 million per team (conservatively - possibly 3).
3) No one is going to make what Texas makes on Tier 3. But that does not mean Tier 3 cannot be profitable. If Clemson can just match what KState brings in they will be bringing in an addition 4.5 million. It will probably be closer to what Kansas is bringing in which is averaging around 7 million a year. But let's go conservative and say 4 million.

So If Clemson and FSU join for the 2013 year, they will be making 21 million from the Contract + 2 Million for the CCG + 4 million for their Tier 3 rights. That's 27 million dollars on the conservative side by 2015.

In 2015, if Clemson stays in the ACC, they will be making 13 million dollars + whatever revenue is generated by the conference championship game. If you assume the ACC CCG is worth as much as the Big 12 CCG (unlikely, but I will give the benefit of the doubt) then they can pull in 15 million.

Compared to 27 million.

Math is a pretty strong suit of mine so Im going to say they aren't going to have 12 million dollars (or anywhere close to it) of travel costs every year. There has been talk from Neinas and Bowlsby about a reimbursement plan to conference members for travel expenses based on total miles traveled for each team (this was concerning West Virginia and their travel concerns).

Re: Big 12 vs ACC...What about the money?...

May 26, 2012, 5:50 AM

You forgot the sec and big12 championship bowl game which will give "at the least" 35 mil to each conference. This would be an additional 3 mil a year or more.

I've been posting various versions of what you posted and my numbers were around $27M as well. I'm jut going to copy your version so I don't have to retype this every time this subject gets brought up. I think these numbers are fairly accurate if we have to make a prediction. Regardless, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say we would make at least $10M more per year. To me the move is a no brainer.

May 27, 2012, 8:03 AM [ in reply to Re: Big 12 vs ACC...What about the money?... ]

A couple things....
Chip Brown said recently that CBS is balking at paying the SEC more money due to the additions of A&M and Mizzou, though they are apparently willing to pay those two new members the same amount the other schools are making. So essentially the addition of those schools may not be the TV money windfall many were expecting. This negotiation will be watched closely by other conferences thinking about expanding.

Also, you add tier 3 rights on top of what Clemson is already receiving from the ACC. I thought I just read in one of David Hood's interviews. With either Swofford or Tdp that ACC schools kept tier 3 rights and those paid about 4 million to the school. If that is the case shouldn't you take tier 3 money out of your comparison?

Re: Big 12 vs ACC...What about the money?...

May 26, 2012, 3:42 AM

What justifies the move more than money is actually being able to play meaningful football. The ACC sadly will probably never play for a National Championship because of the new bowl deal between the Big 12 and the SEC. Big boy football will no longer exist in the ACC. Hope you and Duke have fun in the Nerd Bowl.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL... why don't you guys do some hardcore research

May 26, 2012, 11:43 PM

before you come on here saying silly things like that. You think Clemson would entertain the idea of leaving the ACC for a measly extra $3mil a year? #### no.... think about it.
