Better Conference = More Money = More Wins?

May 23, 2012, 3:30 PM

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I don't understand the argument that SC wins over the past 3 years have been the result of more money. It's easy to make that correlation, but I would like for someone to explain EXACTLY in a logical manner how the extra money, better facilities etc. has created the wins. The only connection that I can see is more money = better facilities = better recruits, BUT this logic doesn't pan out when you look at the rankings of the recruiting classes. Please help me understand.

Better conferences = more money = better coaches, infrastructure, recruits = more wins

In addition

Better conference opponents, your conference regularly contending for national titles = even better recruits = even better teams = even better tv ratings = even more money

It's an upward spiral, assuming your admin (and your conference's admin) uses its resources to their maximum potential

Explain Vandy, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Tennessee

Explain Indiana, Minnesota etc etc etc. They all have gobs of money and are borderline atrocious.

Money helps cover up a lot of problems, but it doesn't cure them. SC is having a perfect storm right now that is helping them. Money is part of it, but finally having a good AD and a truckload of national recruits that just happen to be in their wheelhouse are the bigger factor.

If Clowney wasn't from Rock Hill, would they have him? THink about it.

The only school you mentioned that is a football school is Tennessee. It's about commitment.

Again, you are just repeating the argument but are not explaining the results based on the argument. For example,
I looked at the recruiting rankings for the past 5 years:
From RIVALS.com
2008 CU-12, SC-22, FSU-9
2009 CU-37, SC-12, FSU-7
2010 CU-19, SC-24, FSU-10
2011 CU-8, SC-18, FSU-2
2012 CU-14, SC-19, FSU-6

We have had a better recruiting class than SC in all but 1 year. Therefore MORE Money does not = Better Recruits. The argument then breaks down to more money = better coaches. Is this your argument? That we don't have enough money to hire good coaches?

they have a 3 million dollar coach and a top 15 all staff salary....again money. The only ACC school from 2006 to 2011 in the top 10 of total coaching staff salary was FSU at # 10. And we all know Jimbo is getting paid wayyyy too much. The SEC had 9 in the top 15.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/story/2011-12-19/college-assistant-salaries-package/52123650/1

Clemson ranks 19th right behind Missouri and right ahead of Lousiville.

Not to say Dabo isn't the guy and his salary will go up. But we just recently pulled out the dollars for Morris and Venables. We getting there. And this could be driving Clemson's discussion of Big12 migration.

it's really not the whole story

May 23, 2012, 3:40 PM

1st win was an upset (CJ's senior year). No excuse for not winning that game as we had momentum and lost it on a couple turnovers. They rode the wave of it as after halftime we started looking towards the ACC Championship the next week.

2nd win was because they were simply better. We had an injured, disillusioned Kyle Parker who was just playing the season out, and had absolutely no offense (RB/WRs).

Last year, we were in the midst of our inexplicable late-season funk (GT/Wake/NCSU/SCAR) and probably would have lost to Duke that day. Just a matter of bad timing - earlier in the season we would have handled them (kinda like Auburn beating them because of the Garcia BS - timing).

Just ask Dabo what impact the WEZ has had on recruiting

May 23, 2012, 4:25 PM

at Clemson. I'm not sure the gap in income has been large enough or lasted long enough at SC to make a big difference between Clemson and SCU currently. However, a 10 to 15 million dollar gap going forward would make a big difference quickly. Of course, coaching goes a long way as well, but everything else being equal, money talks.

As a college coach I can tell you that the biggest thing

May 23, 2012, 4:34 PM

money can do for you is upgrade facilities and increase your recruiting budget which allows you to target more kids. I coach baseball so its a different animal than FB is, which generally gets all the support it wants. The issue youre bringing up is that the money difference hasnt impacted our rivalry yet. And for the most part youre right, but this new SEC deal is the biggest ever. Moving to the Big12 isnt about catching up, rather its to keep from falling behind. USuC already brings in 20 million more a year over us. And they have seen benefits from it. They finally got out of Sarge, which was a sh1thole. They were able to hire a coach whose name every actually knows. Theyre able to retain Tanner from other bigtime programs that have come calling. They can retain their coaching staff on the baseball team which we cant. I think that has hurt Clemson baseball bc of the turnover we have with our assistants. It hard to make slam-dunk hires when youre having to do it every 3 or 4 years. Eventually youre going to make a bad one. Luckily for us, USuC is a downtown campus which can be a big turn off for recruits bc they dont have a campus atmosphere. With them battling that and their dubious past, their recruiting is actually doing pretty well.

^^^ hiring a coach with a name was a reference to BB...^^^

Re: As a college coach I thought you might say something dif

May 23, 2012, 4:48 PM [ in reply to As a college coach I can tell you that the biggest thing ]

Well I expected something good in this post and it was one with thought but not what I expected. Collage football and Clemson is no longer in control of its destiny. It is not about winning or conferences, or who you play or even if you win. Its about MONEY $$$$. Money ala TV is destroying all that is good and great about college sports. It will reduce people from going to games, it will eliminate rivalries, it will leave us where they want us in front of a boob tube until maybe the playoff games that only a percentage will be able to afford to attend. As it has severed Texas vs Texas A&M. It has caused the SC State legislature to not vote for a mandatory Clemson vs USC game. It is NOT what is in the best interest of Clemson and they know it but can not afford to stand on what is really good for Clemson because as you say it is about not falling behind. If you study revenue Clemson will remain outside of the top 15 schools even by moving. It will remain a want to be top 15 program and secure itself in the middle of a pack being a good size fish in a large pond vs a large fish in a small pond. To avoid a complete collapse of what is good in college sports Clemson should move to the SEC where we at least do not have an entirely new geography to contend with and play teams we have a history with like South Carolina, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee.
