Clemsons greatest tight ends

15

Oct 3, 2023, 10:01 PM

1) Bennie Cunningham—-Nobody else is even close
2) Dwayne Allen
3) Jim Riggs
4) KD Dunn
5) Jordan Leggett
6) Davis Allen
7) Michael Palmer
8) Lamont Hall

Feels like I’m forgetting a couple of good-uns.

John McMakin should certainly be listed

John McMakin (1969-’71) was the first really versatile tight end for Clemson. He was an All-ACC first-team selection when Clemson teams were not very good. He scored 12 touchdowns and had more reception yards than even Bennie Cunningham.
After Clemson, McMakin played 5 years in the NFL. He was a member of the Steelers first World Championship, Super Bowl IX over the Minnesota Vikings.

We have truly had some fine tight ends play for the Tigers in Death Valley. Thanks for bringing back so many memories.

John "Rookie" McMakin, who played at Clemson when I did, was actually a WR while here and moved to TE after going to the Steelers, where he was the intended receiver for "The Immaculate Reception" thrown by Terry Bradshaw and ending up with Franco Harris making the play of the century.

Jennings was a WR in HS but moved to TE as a Tiger.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup. We didnt use him often but he was always open when not blocking.

Then he was tough after the catch and usually tacked on good yards after the catch.

I’m thinking he had a nice little stint with the Bears too.

No, Keith Jennings was a WR at Clemson. I was at Clemson then and knew Jennings.

Great list! Only 2 changes

3

Oct 3, 2023, 11:47 PM

I know Leggett was good but he was so inconsistent until that last year. For that I'd have to atleast put Davis and palmer in front of him.

And Davis Allen played championship football every snap so id move him up 1.

I wouldn't change the list of players in all.

Good take!

Question ... old guy here with brain fog. Was Legette the Tight End who made a "stretch out" catch on the drive that led to the winning td for a natty?

Yes

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep and thats the only catch generally remembered.

I could go on for years of catches that won games for everyone else that were as difficult or more for multiple years.

Don't get me wrong, Leggett is solid orange for me!

Bennie Cunningham was my favorite Clemson player

5

Oct 4, 2023, 3:49 AM

as a youngster. He was playing when I attended my first Clemson game in October 1973 vs Virginia, the homecoming game that year. Playing high school football at Seneca made him a local hero as well.
