Does asking a coach (rather politely it must be said) if he thinks he’s earning his salary make someone a “POS”? I’d say only if you are far, far too emotionally invested in the coach being asked the question.

I have met many ex military who are awful people.

Just because you somehow ended up in the military does not make you some awesome person.

You have to earn respect.

Keep in mind, our military is voluntary. The majority kids who my kids knew who volunteered were nmot our best.

I said similar in another thread. My son is currently serving (3 years in), and he tells me stories that would make you shake your head.

I went to school with guys that were POS in high school and are still POS now. One is currently in prison for attacking his wife with a machete (fortunately he didn't kill her). Ex-military doesn't always equal the son you wish you had.

I don’t think Dabos come back was inherently wrong. That is if there weren’t so many valid questions that need answers. Questions about coaching hires, what he plans to do about it are questions the majority of the fan base want answers to so when he attacked the only person that’s either been willing or allowed to ask them he attacked a piece of us.

For the record I wouldn’t have bothered to ask him was he worth his salary. First of all that’s just rude and secondly we all know the answer to that one.

This was so one sided that I am not so sure this was not a setup. Tyler repeats 80% of the complainers chorus and Dabo responds.

Oh good grief, we need to get over this bloated sense of importance about all things military we have in this country. We need to have a proper and healthy and deep respect for warriors who take up the mantle for the collective good when our well being is genuinely is at stake, but not every Joe Blow that signs up is "volunteering" to save everyone's life.

I agree with a lot of the criticisms lobbed at Dabo, but there's this thing called tact, and Tyler didn't have it. Having been in the services gives him no special pass.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So he's defending a thin skinned multi-millionaire while calling

1

Oct 31, 2023, 12:15 PM [ in reply to So he's defending a thin skinned multi-millionaire while calling ]

Tyler was completely out of line and disrespectful. He thinks because he’s a “fan” that entitles him to speak to another man however he likes just because that other man is the “coach.” His anonymity makes it all the easier for him to do it. He wasn’t just critical of “coaching” decisions. He got personal with Coach Swinney. It was classless and pathetic.

I’ll also say that if Tyler was in the military, I certainly wouldn’t want him in any foxhole with me. Spoiled front runners are a scary lot. They hug your neck when things are good, but they cut your throat at the slightest hint of discomfort to them. Dabo said they are 1.5%. He was wrong. They comprise a lot more of the Clemson fanbase than that. They are the sorry element that treated Ken Hatfield like a pariah. They are the type that put moving signs in the coach’s front yard and ominously drive past the coach’s house a in wait after a loss to the wrong team or the wrong game. I dislike their frontrunner attitude so much that if they represented the entirety of of the Clemson fanbase, I’d happily root for Clemson to lose every game until every last one of them ran away like the dishonorable frontrunners they are.

A tipping point with being unappreciative for his massive ego, his hubris, his constant falsehoods, and his complete disdain for the fans, as seen by this very call we are discussing. Simply by this caller asking a reasonable question about his salary, Dabo felt the need to belittle that guys life and accomplishments as well as indicating he didn’t care what any fans thought. This was just massive narcissism exposed in one explosive instant.

He thinks he IS Clemson University and sadly, many of you agree.

Oct 31, 2023, 11:24 AM

People who have performed tremendously in high pressure jobs, spend the time to be mentors to ‘subordinates,’ take chances on hiring lesser qualified former ‘tutored students,’ and unceasingly perform public relations acts … and who keep doing this long after they have secured the finances of their family for multiple generations and having achieved the pinnacle of job performance in their chosen profession … MUST, as a basic personality trait, have a massive ego.

Why else would the ‘tremendous performer’ keep on working at the job in the face of criticism, when instead he could cash in his chips and just say good bye?

Here is where the ice gets thin. After the last Swinney boy graduates, how much longer does anyone expect Dabo to hang around if he’s facing an avalanche of feces from a growing percentage of entitled fans?

Dabo haters, be careful what you wish for.

Clemson isn’t going to go to either the SEC (we don’t add value to them) or B1G (facts are that our academic credentials don’t cut it to be invited to them). Clemson will forever be a second class citizen vis-a-vis the SEC and B1G teams; we will never have the wealthy alumni resources of places such as Notre Dame.

As the resource disparity between Clemson and the ‘rich’ schools grows, our FB success rate SHOULD fall in inverse proportion. The partial equalizer for us is the culture driven program that Dabo, quite frankly, built by himself. Neither Frank nor Charley nor Danny nor Ken nor Tommy were able to pull off the ‘culture + winning’ achievement that Dabo did.

I believe that we have settled into a slot where 10+ win seasons will occur a minority of times; appearances in the expanded CFP will happen once every five years; another National Championship may occur during the remaining lifetimes of Clemson fans who are younger than ~ 65 years old.

I also believe that it won’t get better under another coach. On the contrary, Clemson is likely to slide back into the status of better than average, but not much better, that was our history with the exception of the Charley Pell (cheater) and Danny Ford (questionable as far as cheating) regimes.

Great program builders and program sustainers do not grow on trees. Ask FL, FSU, TN, TX, ND, OH State, Bama, Auburn, aTm, etc, etc. The great coaches are acquired by paying them more (outbidding) other schools, along with having an opening at the right time. If Clemson, having regressed into the realm of the above-average, were to compete for a Nick Sabin type coach against a OH State or ND, we would lose out.

None of this long horrible post is meant to say that Dabo is above criticism. Believe it or not, Bama fans are publicly griping about Sagan.

The lesson in all of this is that one aspect of Dabo’s criticism of Call In Tyler is resoundingly true: Clemson fans (nor any other fans) are ENTITLED to having top four teams every year or ten. For those who are tired of Dabo and his act, be careful what you wish for. Dabo doesn’t need us; we need him.

I agree 110%! Dabo has been great for Clemson until now, but if that rave is his true current feelings, he needs a time out and a serious stare into a mirror! I don’t agree with Tyler’s choice to question Dabo’s salary, but Dabo did NOT display ANY of the character the he has been using as a recruiting point for players with his personal attack on Tyler! Clemson’s “powers that be” need to call him on this one! THIS WAS NOT IN CLEMSON’S BEST INTEREST!! Sorry Dabo, I have always loved Clemson and until now greatly respected you, but your rant was not professional and uncalled for. This rant totally did nothing for Clemson and was a very poor reflection on your character. If Dabo can’t control his emotions any better than this, what example is he setting for our players? There is a saying that says 2 wrongs don’t make a right. This is the epitome of that! No one won in this exchange. Just for the record though, I am and always will be a Clemson Tiger fan! Go Tigers!!

You seem to imply that Tyler was some refined, English noble in how he asked his “questions,” if you can call them that. He didn’t ask all that many questions as he used most of his call to make statements of opinions and go on his own “tantrum” of entitlement. Asking “questions” is fine, but just because someone is a “public figure” doesn’t mandate they be treated with blatant disrespect while the disrespectful questioner stays blanketed by the anonymity of being “Tyler from Spartanburg.”

Re: kid said he served in the military.

Oct 31, 2023, 11:10 AM [ in reply to kid said he served in the military. ]

“Appreciation”: Dabo Swinney had a vision for taking Clemson football into the big time, and he did it. In the lucrative world of elite college football, he is worth every penny he is paid—and not just because of the national championships, but also because he cares about his players beyond what they do on the field. Thank you, Dabo, for our success. Thank you for your leadership and your values.

“Expectation”: Based on recent history, it is natural that we will be expected—every year—to be ACC champions, which gives us a good chance to wind up in the College Football Playoffs. Success like we’ve had under Dabo creates those expectations. And that is the whole problem this year for fans.

“Disappointment”: We struggled on offense the last two seasons, so decisive Dabo replaced Streeter as Offensive Coordinator with Broyles Award winner Garrett Riley. Cade Klubnik, who showed huge promise last year, replaced a dissapointing D.J. Uiagalelei in the most visible position on a football team. So we fans EXPECTED an explosive offense this year that would dominate opponents. But that offense has been so bad—for all kinds of reasons—that we fans are beyond disappointment.

The Wise Response: Any fan has the right to ask the question Tyler did on Dabo’s radio show. Dabo should have seen it coming, and his answer should have been: “Tyler, thank you for your question, which I am sure is on the minds of a lot of our awesome fans. All I can say is, whatever I am paid, you are going to get a coach who cares about Clemson University and about his players, and who is just as disappointed as you are. We are not going to stop giving everything we have to make our program something to be proud of.”

Bland response? Yep. But if he had said that—and by the way, it would have been sincere—then there would not be all this noise on the Internet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: kid said he served in the military.

Oct 31, 2023, 2:12 PM

Indeed, Dabo’s response clearly was an impulsive, triggered one.

This reveals what we know about every other human being on earth: Neither Dabo, nor anyone else, is perfect.

Dabo’s response to Call in Tyler not withstanding, we Clemson fans need to take some other matters into account:

Recruiting success is the single most important factor in college FB success. Look no further than Auburn / Chizik - 2010 and LSU / Orgeron - 2019.

For programs such as Clemson who will never be able to keep pace with the truly wealthy colleges that also have legendary (great) FB programs, continuity in the ranks of assistant coaches is critical. Loyalty indeed cuts both ways; HC’s who justify their reputations as being loyal to their assistant coaches typically enjoy reciprocal loyalty. (It is not disloyal for an assistant coach to accept a HC position at another school.)

Dabo, by virtue of his unusual loyalty to position coaches who had previous positive experiences at Clemson, is trying to maximize the loyalty factor so that, in the event that another school tries to lure one of our assistants (and along with the AC the key players that he is recruiting), that Dabo will be given the courtesy of a ‘right of last refusal’ to make a counter offer to keep the AC on his coaching staff. THIS is a great help with overall recruiting success.

As for call in shows when fans blast Dabo and his AC’s, this hurts with recruiting. If Dabo were to be polite and respond empathetically to a critical caller, and accordingly agree that ‘Clemson’s assistant coaches are not great coaches, but they are good men,’ then try to imagine the negative impact that would have on recruiting -&- confidence that his AC’s would have in Dabo as ‘having their backs.’ It would be unimaginably stupid if Dabo had taken the ‘be empathetic to frustrated fan’ response instead of the Un empathetic ‘don’t worry, all is fine’ response.

In summary, a bland, vapid response would have been better than his fiery, over the top, unnecessary bragging defensive response. But the worst possible response would have been if Dabo agreed with Call in Tyler.

Oct 31, 2023, 2:27 PM [ in reply to Re: tyler said what the media paid to cover the team ]

No, I think he is mad because after his first mediocre to poor season he’s had in 13 years, spoiled frontrunners refuse to show him even a modicum of grace. The man has won 165 games in 15 years at Clemson a fairly above average football team that had been irrelevant, both regionally and nationally for two decades before he took the job. He didn’t do all this at Texas or Ohio State or Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Michigan, or Alabama. He did it at all, as he has well said many times, at “little ole’ Clemson.”

Yes, Clemson University. A regional, land grant university agrarian and technical university located in a small southern town, in a corner of a small, rural county, in one of the smallest and poorest states in the nation. He did it all at a relatively small to average sized university that has achieved good to, on the very rare occasions, great levels of gridiron football success for a select few decades in125+ years of fielding a school team. And, he did it all at a school that has made football its priority while being a forever “also ran”founding member of an athletic conference widely and heavily known for it rich tradition, unparalleled success, and rabid passions for BASKETBALL. For the majority of the vast majority of the ACC, football was just something you did until the really important sport began in the winter.

All that being said, I think he’s entitled to a little bit of grace and respect for the occasional bad season, as well as being entitled to tell frontrunners like Tyler to go pound sound.

Oct 31, 2023, 7:53 AM [ in reply to Re: tyler said what the media paid to cover the team ]

If Dabo decides to leave there is a good chance that it will be worse than when Ford was fired. Clemson as a University is not built to thrive in the NIL world. It is a school not located in a major metro area. So is Penn State and Texas A&M. Those schools have huge alumni bases compared to Clemson. It was not that long ago that Clemson only had 12,000 undergrads. I am not sure there is a single billionaire who is a Clemson graduate, let alone one that wants to dump their money into a college football team.

Clemson is not able to compete with the other elite teams with a me too approach. Dabo is willing to do things his way instead of copy catting everyone Granted his way is not working this year. If he leaves and we get some “Let’s do what Bama and Georgia do” person , we will be lucky to be a perennial 8-4 team. Tx A&M has deep pockets to afford who they want and have a CFP winning Coach yet they are still a perennial 8-4 team.

Dan Lanning is a good young coach. Unless Phil Knight dies, he would be a fool to leave Oregon for anything other than Bama, Georgia, OSU, SoCal, Notre Dame or Michigan.

I fully expect that the “Dabo needs to go” crowd will get what they want in the next couple of years. He already didn’t like where the game is headed, now he does not feel appreciated by the fans for what he has clearly accomplished.

We had no facilities and the board was not behind the football program, now we have incredible facilities, fanbase and backing from the President and down. This is a great job for many top quality coaches, actually seems like we hired a new less competent staff starting in 2021. Yeah right! Sweeney is the winningest coach in Clemson football history and that’s why he gets paid $10.5M a year! This year is a down year and Clemson has not played well. Tyler was out of line. Questioning Dabo’s ability and comparing him to a mediocre former coach is flawed and nasty based on 2008 to 2023 overall results. Who has been better at Clemson? Dabo needs to finish the year as strong as possible, then address program after the season.

Buttholes like you and Tyler will wind up running off the greatest coach this program will ever see. SMH. Coach has equity, money in the bank. Even Fortune 500 companies have down years sometimes. Coach Swinney will adjust and right the ship, that is if you crybabies don't tick him off enough to leave first...

If Dabo believes that he is exempt for criticism in his profession, then maybe he should do something else. Look, we are all pissed and dissatisfied in what we are seeing on tbe field. But as a man Dabo can defend his record and state his accomplishments. However, he is a representative of Clemson university and the tirade tonight makes him look small in the grand scheme of things. I mean so what, a fan says you make too much money to be 4-4. You have to reply and say thanks for call Tyler, we will keep doing everything in out power to fix this. That's it. Don't engage people like that. This will go national and Dabo will be painted as a softy that got his feelings hurt by a caller on a radio show.

In 2011, I’m sure no one had a problem when Dabo went on a tirade against Spurrier. He was defending his program then just like he did against this guy, Tyler. No difference in my opinion. Tyler and Spurrier no different. And before someone says “but Tyler is a fan”, well we don’t know that. Plus, even if he is, calling in and being personal towards Dabo and emphasizing all the negatives without, maybe, first thanking him for all he’s done for Clemson, the guy’s a disrespectful, unappreciative punk. Snow flake who needs a safe space and would never say that to his face. That is all.

It's not a crap record that is going to end up costing us recruits it Dabo and his mouth. You don't think Saban, Smart, Day, Novell and these other coaches are loving this? "Dabo is becoming unhinged" will be the line they start using with recruits. Or they'll say "look at how he treats is fans in public, how do you think he's going to treat your son when you're not around."

And this is EXACTLY what Dabo’s problem is. He has surrounded himself by the “yes men” from the staff to the school officials down even to local media that covers the team.

I didn’t actually hear it but sounds like Tyler said what nobody around Dabo will and it drew that kind of reaction from an 11 million dollar a year coach. I thought he didn’t care what people that he wouldn’t take advice from thoight? It sure sounds like he cares what they think.

The reason Dabo reacted that way is bc the dude was right it sounds like. Dabo would have NEVER EVER reacted this way 5 years ago or even 10 years ago. He now thinks he’s God and shouldn’t be questioned at all ever. He continues to point to PAST accomplishments and I surely never hear Saban or Kirby or Day do things like that.

This proves that Dabo is no longer the answer and for those that keep supporting the way this program is being run… enjoy fighting to even make a bowl game for the foreseeable future.

The way this program is ran right now… we will never sniff another national title/playoff appearance/ or an ACC title.

Re: yep whe you look at how we dinked and dunked

9

Who are the Colts?

But yeah, 11 wins doesn't mean the same it meant 30 years ago. 30 years ago, it was 10 wins out of a possible 12. Now it's 10 out of a possible 15, soon to be 16. They mean different things. But let's actually look at last year.

Clemson had two games on the national stage that matter to the recruits we want to attract: Notre Dame and Tennessee. We were blown out by both teams. Absolutely crushed. We lost to our terrible rival, at home, blowing the country's longest home winning streak. And the games we won were against a bad ACC, the fourth weakest conference last year. I don't consider that a successful season, especially when we're supposed to have the fourth most talented roster in the country and are paying our coaching staff the second most in the nation.

That's what Dabo and his stupid cult members don't get. Expectations rise as you start to get paid more money. Clemson is 7-7 in its last 14 games. It has a losing record against FBS opponents. There are 100 coaches who could accomplish that, many of whom would cost boosters and tax payers less than half of what Dabo costs. But Dabo thinks he should be rewarded for things he accomplished 5 years ago, despite the continual decline. And he doesn't think he's doing anything wrong.

If he wants to take his ball and go hone then he isn't the kind of person we need or he claims to be.

This isn’t the first time it’s been said. He almost always praises some imaginary thing about “Clemson” like this fan base was a bunch of hillbillies who were never going to win anything and when Moshiac Ben Dabo came along everyone went to praising and a praying thanks. That never was true. First of all he named two other great coaches that worked here so let’s put that idea to bed and move on.

Secondly he got the position when we ran his predecessor off mid season. He should have know what was expected and appreciation is shown and has been, both mentally and monetarily. No one is allowed to ask hard questions?

Then comes the I’ll just go somewhere else. He’s said it a bazillion times. No you won’t. Firstly no one else wants you and we ain’t firing you. You’re going to make changes that are needed and earn your 64 million or life isn’t going to be fun. Now get to work and quit getting snappy with the fans ### hole

We can’t afford him either, especially not for this performance. This is only the beginning, outburst like this show he’s backed in a corner, doesn’t know where to turn and he’s lashing. Old Dabo would do that to the media not a fan. The media is trash talking him, lash out at them. That would not only be acceptable that would excite us. He’s lashing at anyone of us who dares to ask him a hard question and that my friend is all I need to know

I did not hear the call in show but, I just read the transcript and cringed. That is not a good look for Dabo. He used to say that last year’s touchdowns do not win this year’s games. The same can be said for win/loss records. All Dabo had to say is that he is going to fix the problems with the football team. The unhinged diatribe that he spit out is not a professional look. Dabo seems to be oblivious to the fact that his long term IPTAY members are not happy.

Please help me remember Danny’s teams. How many years did they show up not prepared to play their best? Dabo’s team this year is not well coached and it is not well prepared.

It may not have mattered what the tone was anyway. Dabo should have been expecting these types of questions and it sounds like he had a prepared response with many points about how he has never failed. It doesn’t sound like he has but the fact that he pointed it out this way is pretty obnoxious 😳

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One of two things is going on here.

10

Oct 30, 2023, 9:37 PM

1) This is real and our head coach has proven himself to be thin-skinned and defensive, taking it overboard to detract from what we've witnessed this season. This is the type of lecturing that is kinda motivating and cute when you're winning, but is downright embarrassing when you're losing.

2) This is a staged attempt to fire up the "Dabo can do no wrong crowd" and get them to circle the wagons and dig their heels in so they don't have to admit what a failure we've seen this season. It almost seems so forced and scripted that it has to be, right? Who talks like that?

I love Dabo and what he's done for this program, but for all the supposed detractors out there, this right here is what they're talking about.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: One of two things is going on here.

4

Oct 30, 2023, 10:04 PM

Very well stated. Can't believe people are overreacting about Tyler. They must not listen to other coaches shows. Callers in Bama are more ticked off than Tyler is or T-Net forum is over the year Bama is having this season.

Guess it comes down to what you desire our team to be and what your expectations are. Y'all think Tyler is bad, listen to the Bama shows if Saban loses another game. Personally, I do aspire and expect Clemson to be a "Bama " each year. 11-3 and missing the playoffs is going to happen if you have extenuating circumstances, but when you follow up that with a 4-4 start, sorry. That's unacceptable and Dabo should be asked tough questions.

Obviously, according to T-Net forum, I should be ashamed calling for change because of the 4-4 start.

My first thought was that Tyler was a plant.

1

The train is off the tracks. Been off the tracks for a couple years but now all the hiring mistakes and recruiting misses are coming home to roost. By the time mid February rolls around we may have a full blown dumpster fire. Just depends how many commits get flipped and how many players head to the portal. If it goes badly then Finebomb will be correct. We will become the next Miami or Nebraska or Fla State during their lost years. All the way until 2031 when the contract runs out. Teetering on the edge of disaster at the moment. Hope it turns around but don't see it.

This is exactly the right take. Nobody is in a panic because we're having one lousy year. People are disappointed because we've gotten demonstrably worse at the football each of the last three years. BTW our O.C. is likely to be looking to jump ship before this season is over so he can escape with his reputation and a chance at a head coaching job. But I'm sure Dabo knows someone on the Daniel High staff he's got picked out to fill in for him. It's not that people don't appreciate what Dabo has done for the team. It's more that they feel like his previous formula isn't working like it used to and we want to see him adapt to the modern, tumultuous world of college football. The reason people are excited about Colorado isn't because they're a great team right now, but it looks like they're improving. The reason people are down on Clemson right now, is because that it looks like we're getting worse and it could accelerate exponentially when the four and five stars start entering the portal to go chase a championship.

While we're at it, screw this "wont be 35 years" line

If you are naive enough to think that the football world owes us anything just because we have won for years, you are off the deep end. If you are naive enough to think that just because we had undefeated seasons in 81 and 18 that means we should go undefeated every year, you are so far off the deep end that you may be hopeless. The Judge and many others love to simply watch games and decide every issue with out a clue, without being in the program, without regard for facts, without respect for the coaches and what they bring, without players injuries knowledge, etc.
Nope, they sit and pretend they have a clue. That simply bringing in a player or two from the portal or hiring some cast off from another team to be a position coach - solves all issues. Dabo knows who can and cannot coach. He sees it every day. He did not hire people for the BS reasons you like to claim. He brought them in because he knows their talent. He will make any changes he feels he needs to do.
The game has changed. The top talent has spread out and the dominant teams of the past decade are no longer the same. Yes, Clemson has lost 2 OT games. Yes, we lost to nc state and pretty well dominated them. Duke loss was turnovers. Strange but bad events. Nobody likes them. If the 2 goal line fumbles at Duke don’t happen, are we here? If the kicker hits the short FG at the end of the FSU game - are we here? All the success Dabo has led us to and the clowns now think Dabo has lost his mind.

Fans are very fickle. It’s all about what have you done today.

However, I’m surprised Dabo was so thin skinned to rant for so long. He should have handled some random Clemson fan or troll?? in a better fashion.

I do have a lot of questions about the very insular bevy of coaching hires with a limited or nonexistent track record.

However, Dabo in my opinion still has a huge amount of equity from past performances but when you’re earning the amount of money he’s making, current and future performances trump the past, so the criticism comes with the job.

I’m sure he’s incredibly frustrated at the turnovers and poor decisions at times by Cade, but he needs to be a bigger man than to let some call in dude rattle him.

The truth is this is a team without the same quality at QB, RB and our OL is poor. This is not an 8-0 team.

I have a large reservoir of good will towards Dabo and do appreciate all he’s done and hopefully will do in the future, but he didn’t come off well tonight and with what I’ve seen thus far on the field, he had best get better at taking questions and criticism, because it’s unlikely we’re done losing.

People who aren’t fans of something don’t typically spend valuable time on it.

I know it soothes your ego to assume that anyone whose opinion you don’t like must not be a fan, but that’s a shallow view.

Oct 31, 2023, 7:23 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Dabo Swinney goes scorched-earth on caller questioning his Clemson program ]

The questions that he has been getting the last few weeks are predictable. They are predictable because they are fair questions. I'm not saying that means the point they are trying to drive home is correct, but they are things people deserve an answer to. Some people insinuate that he is overpaid. I don't think that he is, but the question is fair and definitely predictable. Say "I am fortunate to be in a position that market factors have driven salaries for coaches to heights that I could never imagine. Have I earned my salary this year. No, but I like to think that I my past successes balance it at least to some extent."

To say that he is making 11 million a year because he worked his a$$ off shows that he has lost perspective. I've worked mine off for longer than Dabo, have been reasonably successful, but have absolutely no prayer of making that. To call a life long Clemson fan and military veteran an ### and say that they are part of the problem, is completely uncalled for.

Oct 30, 2023, 10:43 PM

I only read the transcript, but from Dabo’s response, it sounds like the fan has been going on for a while - with perhaps a biting attitude - and Dabo had had enough. I can’t blame him.

Let me first say that Dabo built a Juggernaut that we all have come to celebrate and appreciate, and we’ve enjoyed more championships - including 2 Nattys - and wins than I ever thought we would see in a 15 year period. I thank Dabo for the way he has won too — doing things the right way with real student athletes that his program has helped to become men in the best sense of the word.

Sports is the great meritocracy and it’s all about “what have you done for me lately” … for right or wrong. We find ourselves at a crossroad with new challenges - transfer portal, NIL - and there is a learning curve and a balance that must be struck to try not to upset the Apple cart of a program that IMO became the model program of college football (taking everything into account) that many programs have tried to emulate.

No doubt some people rolled their eyes when someone asked Dabo right after he became head coach which program he wanted to be like and he said no one’s.. I want everyone to want to be like Clemson’s program. Mission accomplished!!

I’ve talked to Dabo briefly a handful of times and he is the most genuine guy you can meet. What you see is what you get. I appreciate his candor. And this guy is intelligent and works hard. I’ve worked with top executives at some Fortune 100 companies, and he’s right up there with them - he just has a different style.. that works for him.

He is a great success not only in his careers, but in life - especially given the obstacles that we’re out in his way.

I have no doubt that he has been troubled by the recent decline in overall play of the team, and t he knows what needs to be done … but he also has to make the changes in such a way as to not implode the program at the same time.

He went out and got Garrett Riley, which was a great move. Unfortunately … IMO … his offense has been stifled by some coaches with limited experience … that maybe should have started coaching at a lower level than a National Powerhouse program.

I believe that is when the product in the field started to decline. And no matter how good a manager is (GR), if you don’t have the right level of experience on the staff, results will be harder to come by.

So now Dabo knows there’s a problem, what it is, what needs to be done, but the hardest part is making decisions that affect people’s livelihood. When he selects the right experienced coaches, we’ll be back in the top tier again before you know it.

I have faith in Dabo… he’ll get it done. GO TIGERS!!

Re: TNET: Dabo Swinney goes scorched-earth on caller questioning his Clemson program

Oct 30, 2023, 11:06 PM

I think both men are correct here. Tyler is absolutely right to question why a coach who is the 2nd highest paid coach in the country is leading his team to a pitiful 4-4 season, up to this point. Our 4 victories are not quality wins. We have struggled in every game this season including the wins. The offense is painful to watch and it has been for a while. For those that support everything Dabo does, what victory this season is your favorite? Something has to change and a good place to start is the OL and WR coaches. The media should be asking these "tough" questions.

In regards to Dabo, he has every right to defend himself with his record. He has brought 2 championships and 8 ACC championships. I'm pretty sure all of us are grateful for that. If you aren't, then you are a fool. Dabo has made Clemson one of the top programs in the country. But there are serious problems with his program. He should have taken the high road and not tried to belittle Tyler. It's not a good look for him and the media will have a field day with this clip. Do I believe Dabo can turn the program around? Absolutely! Do I think there is currently a better candidate to do it? No, not really. Do I think Dabo is willing to make the tough decisions that need to made? That is where I question if he will get this turned around.

Of course the WR group and OL group have underperformed. The OL has underperformed for a long time. We just had QBs(Deshaun and Trevor) who were good enough to hide it. But the problem has gotten worse. We are getting the talent all across the offense, but we are not developing the talent. Someone the other day said I would rather have a great developer than a great recruiter. Clemson used to be able to develop 1-3 stars. But it appears we cannot develop 4 and 5 stars. I feel there needs to be a serious coaching overhaul and there needs to be use of the portal to help fill needs. Even if that means encouraging some guys to seek playing time elsewhere. We all can name some players who every week we say how is that guy starting for this team? That shouldn't be happening when our coach is paid $11.5 million a year.

The biggest concern I have with Dabo is the fact that we still are losing games in the fashion of which we are. Turnovers have killed this team. I don't believe if we didn't turnover the ball that would make an instant Title contender. But the fact we cannot hold onto a #### ball every single game means we are not holding players accountable or practicing the basics. That is a problem you can and should be able to correct during the season. I will end my rant there as there is so much more I could say, but I've gotten my point across!

We have no fire, no intensity on either side. 4-4 with b2b losses and some of the most horrible offensive coaching in yrs. Dabo is losing it. He knows better than to go off on a caller on a radio show. He should have said “you are entitled to your opinion,” and “when we play bad that’s on all of us. We win as a team, we take responsibility for losses as a team.” That’s it. Never get down to some caller’s level. He needs some thicker skin. He must think this fires up his guys. It doesn’t. It just makes him look bad.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Both were wrong

6

Oct 31, 2023, 12:51 AM

While the caller was fairly calm and matter of factual, bringing up the salary was childish and irrelevant. I don’t care if you’re paid a Matt Barrie dollar or a billion a year, winners perform at 100%, 100% of the time regardless of pay. Only lazy losers bring up pay’s correlation to output. Our standard should be “win or you’re out” regardless of salary. But the coach’s reply was also over the top and a bit childish. Confident and professional men can take a direct hit and keep on going. But this time, Dabo didn’t. He allowed someone he doesn’t even know to get under his skin and reply in a manner unbecoming of a future hall of fame coach. I presume both will wake up tomorrow wishing they’d done better.

I agree that the salary is irrelevant. He's earned it. He's earned the right to try and fix things, and for me to have as long as he wants to try. The other thing he has earned is the criticism, and that includes the pride comes before the fall comment which he proved when he started talking about everything that Clemson hadn't seen before he came along.

Agree. Both were wrong, but Tyler goes back to being anonymous and Clemson has deal with the fall out. Dabo’s fire is the the thing that has made him so great. It’s good for him to tell the truth to a person who probably lives week to week with no perspective to how hard it is to win and keep winning at a high level.

If it was easy every coach would be doing it but we are talking about the best overall coach in college football who not only wins and builds a family culture of love and respect for these young men like none other.

He has been nothing less than spectacular and our fans are freaking agreeing with coots and all these other fans/media that have had to wait many years and have taken many L’s to pile on lil’ole Clemson after Dabo built a powerhouse.

I love you so called Tigers that pile on criticism whether he answers it or not y’all call him prideful regardless if he rants or not.

I’d hate to have you guys as friends in a battle, fight or life struggle. Y’all take your ball and go home, your loyalty to is to no one but yourself while calling Dabo prideful, you say your with him if he meets your judgment(that changing constantly with every battle) but you don’t care who the coach is as long as we win.(FSU comes to mind, it’s taken almost a decade of changing coaches for them and ton of money and the program isn’t close to the culture Clemson has overall)

Quit while it’s tough and support him again when he meets your ever changing judgment. With fans and friends like that can’t imagine being your enemies.

He has proven his desire to win and be great and we’ve watched him do it, every team in College football has dreamed about having a Dabo Swinney while we have been blessed to be that team but many fans want perfection that doesn’t exist.

When you get a great coach supporting him like he did us when things were bad, Dabo has given everything to help make the paw the best he could. We’ve had a tough season with a Team that has been pretty good and competitive despite the losses.

He needs the fans to keep supporting like true fans or we are going to lose the best coach we have ever had, we made this mistake with Danny Ford, it cost us 35 years or more.

If you pray, this team needs our prayers and encouragement, these kids need to know we love and we are supporting and believing they will continue to get better.

This team is down, primarily down on its luck, and I hope we can rebound this year. We still have some great teams ahead. If we can respond, we could have a great year next year. But what I really love about Dabo is the other things--the graduation rate, the character of the team, the competitiveness. So many comments. Here is one more - I did not hear the conversation on the radio, so I can't really have any accurate opinion on who was snarky and who was being reasonable. I read what was reported, which was not the entire exchange, so again, I can't form an accurate opinion with any certainty. From what I've read, I can say that it seems reasonable to ask for an explanation on the logic behind some of the actions Dabo has taken over the last several years and how he plans to fix some of the problems with the program. Many of the perceived problems have been discussed ad nauseam on this board. I would genuinely be interested in finding out from Dabo if he acknowledges the same problems and what his plan is to fix them or if he disagrees with a lot of people's assessments of what is wrong. So far, I have not heard him address the problems publicly in any serious way. Maybe this guy Tyler was not the right guy to ask the questions and that is what set Dabo off. I think the questions should still be asked. I would hope Dabo will, at some point, maybe after some reflection, realize he is not helping the situation by delaying answering. He has been delaying answering for three years now. I think most people would rally behind him if he would just deal honestly with the public and not adopt the attitude that it is not any of the public's business.

What’s going to happen when Clemson loses to Notre Dame and drops to 4-5?

Also, do any of you here feel bad about ripping DJ and blaming him for the ‘bad’ seasons the last two years? Do you wonder why TL was so good as a true freshman and never got any better?

Dabo needs to make some swift changes in the off season, but I believe he’s a smart man and he will do whatever it takes. Why wouldn’t he?

He didnt make the proper changes after our last two underachieving seasons.

If he had, we wouldn’t be getting worse.

I'm glad to see fire in Dabo's belly. I hope he directs that anger at our opponents. And fires up our team.

And Dabo may be right about appreciation vs expectations. How many here complained when we were not crushing our opponents . We were winning, but not by EXPECTED large margins.

Go Dabo! GO TIGERS!

I never thought I would ever see our ridiculous run over roughly the last decade. I’m good. Not crazy about his Asst hires, or some of the players, but what the heck do I really know? Not much. Yeah he makes a lot of money, but only pennies of it could possibly be mine. We just all got addicted. After the withdrawals subside, we’ll be okay. CDS want to win as badly or more so than anyone else. Will we have another big run? Dunno. What I do know is I’ll be pullin’. Here’s hoping the rest of the season is 2003esque. GO TIGERS!!

There are a few things that this did. One of them is quite obvious.

1) The divisiveness between fans will now be used against us in recruiting.

Teams will use this, our own message board, to turn potential future Tigers away from the program.

2) Dabo, the public face of the University, has now given the media additional ammunition to bad mouth Clemson.

If you attack your fans, which is the second time (albeit the first was much more tame and needed), the media will put a price on your head.

Everything that happens at Clemson for the next few months to a year, will be under a microscope from the media. You think the Harbaugh situation is bad now, the media will execute Dabo and Clemson if there anything suspicious is whispered (whether there is truth or not).

3) It either lit a fire under Dabo to change things for the better and bring back his passion (God, I hope so) or it signaled his readiness to abandon ship and move on.

I only read the transcript of what was put hear by T'Net, so the tone and attitude cannot be conveyed appropriately. The verbiage is what concerns me.

However, we cannot let this divide us as fans. We are Tiger Nation. We are Clemson University. All of us. Staff, Alumni, Students or fan, it doesn't matter.

that Tyler asked if the salary was earned, and that HCDS didn't directly answer the question.

Clearly expectations are higher than the result, so how does this salary question help? Does it edify, correct, or build up? I submit it actually is intended to criticize, diminish and tear down. It's a level of disrespect and anger that marks a sad day for Clemson, whether you think it's a fair question or not. I think the question is intended to be an insult. I personally don't think any of the salaries (or NIL) are worth the sport, but that's a different rant.

I was in DV when the banner plane flew with "Howard built it, Danny filled it, Hatfield killed it". That attitude got us Tommy West. Better days are ahead. Look up and focus on what is above. Look to the hills from where the help comes. Change is coming. Is everyone willing to put in positive effort to get there? Go Tigers!

I ain't RevDodd, but its the best I got. Go Tigers!

It’s not what happens that really matters. Its what you do about it that counts. The easiest way to shut everybody up is to go win some football games. Buzz words and cute slogans dont cut it. Too many people sleeping on silk sheets…the fire has gone out of the program. Started when Brent Venables left. But I promise you the Board of Trustees is givin somebody a spankin today…that is not good publicity for the program.

Okay Dabo- nobody is questioning your overall record- it’s outstanding. But this isn’t just a “bad year.” What we have seen is a steady decline, particularly offensively, since the Ohio State beat down in 2020. What everyone wants to know is if you have a plan to fix it. We all hope you do but you must recognize that this season is just a continuation of the previous two. Yes there has been some bad luck but there’s also been bad play and bad coaching. Something is not right. Fans see it. Fans feel it. Clemson football is in decline. Please fix it.

ALot of yall are missing the point everytime lol I posted that I support Dabo and all our coaches and players 110% and all true tiger fans should during good times and bad . Do I think thinks could be different sometimes yes but I still believe Dabo is the best coach in college football today. But the point that most of yall are missing and why he's getting so mad is not because yall are judging everything he does because yall think yall know more but it's the players he cares so much for them he knows that they see the nasty comments that 1.5% make and how down they get do yall think it doesn't bother them he has already said he has think shin and can take but he's tire of his players having to hear it from the fans that are supposed to have their back during the good and bad!!!!

Lol asking someone why they are paid this and that is not respectful so all the people saying he respectfully asked him a question is wild. We are fans, we buy tickets, and merchandise. What the AD felt he should get paid over the course of time and what this season has been does not dignify that type of a question.
