When the paw was registered that was the start time of nearly all our games.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

The Paw came from a patented print from the Smithsonian.***

Almost all the home games in the 70's and 80's used to be played at 1:00 if they weren't televised...the Tiger Paw turned 30 degrees to the right signified that

"From 1957 to 1991, the Clemson Football team played no home night games. During this time period, the traditional kickoff time for home games was 1:00, resulting in the distinguishable tilt of the Tiger Paw in a 1 o'clock direction. One of the reasons for this kickoff time was the preference of the fans. A high percentage of fans must drive over four hours in a day to see the Tigers play. As a result, they are required to purchase a minimum two-night stay in a hotel room when they come to night games at Clemson."

honestly I think this is revisionist history

Feb 10, 2015, 8:03 AM

People prefer the tilt and after we had tiny little paws sometimes with no tilt during the Bowden era, this revisionist detail was added as justification.

The paw is turned 30 degrees or in the 1 oclock position because most games were scheduled for 1:00 in Death Valley.

younger folks aren't aware that in olden days few, if any, students would have supported later games due to one reason: the CDA-sponsored dances in the cafeteria on Saturday evenings.

The dances were much-awaited social affairs, usually featuring some of the top groups of those days - like the Four Tops, Temptations, Drifters and others. Following games, we would escort our dates to guest homes, return to our dorms to dress, then pick up the ladies. Male students wore coats and ties, while the ladies wore dresses. All that getting ready required time, and no one wanted to be late for the dance beginning. Hence, why we liked the early afternoon games.

Additionally, lodging was sparse in and around Clemson, so folks travelling from the Midlands and low country had time to return home. Thus, there wasn't much after-game tailgating.
